I should soon be moving ahead with either C20LET, or YBT power in my mk1 and will more than likely transplant my entire XE power unit into a 'Locost' based kit car.
How well is 170-180bhp going to be handled by an English axle? (it's from a small capacity Capri if it's any help - a 1.6 I think, with a 3.89:1 diff).

In such a light car there shouldn't be a problem.Infact national hot rods have to use english axles and the put out around 230bhp without problems as do super silhouettes:thumb:

dad had 180 bhp and ran super sticky slicks.never broke anything and that launched quite hard.been in there at least 8 years without any probs.
you shouldn't have any probs mate, uncle had 190+ bhp proven pinto, he used race like mad and only problem was the diff started whining, so got a propa lsd, and some stronger halfshafts:thumb:
On a road car you will be ok, but if you intend to race or rally, then its not a case of "if, but when" it will break.pray:
the English is ok for roundy roundy stuff, but where you have any chance of lifting a wheel under power or have surface changes from gravel to tarmac then the English will eventually give up.
I rallied an English in a Mk2 with a healthy pinto for a while, then at tycroes one year, i bust two shafts and two diffs in one weekend.
Considering the cost of a replacement diff and then some uprated shafts, your not far off the cost of an Atlas.
Since ive been on an Atlas, its been fit and forget.
Just IMO

It's a Lotus Seven replica... so I can guarantee it's never going near gravel :)
