View Full Version : Bellhousing/gearbox bolts?
Just having a play in the garage-tried offering up the new bellhousing to my type 9-and the 4 bolts that fix it are too big for the bellhousing holes.
The holes are tapped also-which means i cant get a bolt to fit the b/h to the g/b as the holes are bigger in this? And i cant get a smaller bolt in fron g/b side as theres not enough room-looks like the only way to do it is to redrill the b/h holes to accept the larger g/b bolts-which i think is a bit strange seeing as i paid bloody good money for the bellhousing in the first place-and it dont fit.:rsocmoan:
Any ideas-anyone else in the same boat?
:dunno: Cheers, John.:thumb:

you need some allen bolts that will go thru g/box into bellhousing. makes changing the g/box a doddle
Aaaaaah good thinking mate-i'll get some measured up-thanks for that.
yukspeed sell the bolt kits 10 quid if i remember got some for mine nice quick fit:)hows the build going buddy?
Cool i'll look some up. Just got back into it actually been very slack on this one as been doin little bits on the red one-and couldnt get my welder mate interested in the little bits that need finishing. But he's over next week to do some more-i've still been gathering bits tho-when they come up at the right price lol. Got plenty to do and buy still-but my wishlist may not get fulfilled just yet-ie nice shiny adjustable items-so refurbed standard jobs will have to do to get her rolling first. Got my enthusiasm back also after a few months of feeling shite. Especially after seeing some of the work that gets done on here in what seems like weeks-its been almost a year since the last welding work-so i want to get back out in the garage and getting stuck in.
Pics will be on the resto thread soon-i hope!! Thanks for the tip again mate.

The Vauxhall bellhousing to Ford gearbox bolts are M12 cap screws but are not a normal pitched thread.
I have four new and unused left over from my unfinished (and now sold on) project - £8 posted to anyone who wants 'em :thumb:
Well M10's fit my b/h fine-normal thread pitch too.:dunno: But they wont fit thru gearbox now as the heads are too close to the case....So i may redrill the b/h holes out and use the standard Ford gearbox bolts going thru b/h into box.pray:
Heres some pics-everyone likes pics.:D
Original g/b bolts-12mm.

So is there any reason i cant drill out this thread to accept this 12mm ford bolt??

Don't see why you couldn't drill and tap it to fit the other bolts. But I thought the point was to make the gearbox quick release so you can take the gearbox off without removing the bellhousing. I have seen people grind the gearbox case around the bolt area to allow fitment before.
Yeah i did think about grinding the box but am not too bothered about quick release to be honest. Would they need tapping though? Would a snug fit not be enough?
i made mine quick release mate - it was a bit of a pain.
You need to get a die grinder to the casing so it fits in the hole and fits flush when its done up.
the problem i had was that i didn't grind back far enough - you need to grind up the casing so the bolt is inline as it goes through the hole.
If your not fussed just drill out those threads in bellhousing and bolt it on normally mate - i think you stil need cap head bolts though as they sit in a recess:thumb:
Yeah getting them drilled out this week. I've already tried one of the original bolts in the b/h-its got recesses for the bolt head-and i've also tried it with a socket on and it clears.
Sorted mate.:thumb: Cheers, John.
Forgot to add i didnt fancy grinding the casing as you know the bolts need a fair bit of room to go in straight. Also if the box goes bang-which no doubt it will sooner rather than later lol-it will be a straightforward swap-no more grinding.

Ah I see.............I meant t'other way round i.e. from the Bellhousing into the gearbox case. The gearbox thread is the oddball pitch. My B/H holes weren't threaded.
Still got the set of 4 new ones if anyone wants them.:thumb:

the gearbox bolts are M12 x 1.5
normal pitches are 1.25 or 1.75,
most fixing suppliers can get them. hex head or cap head...:)

Bellhousing (type 9 to xe)are threaded so can be used for quick release application, (if you'r posh enough to have spare/time to fit)
where cap screws go thro' box first, (which are de-threaded then bushes fitted)to get cap to fit you need to machine box where head goes, better to drill thread out in b/h & fit same thread bolts as on std. Ford box but need to be longer as the b/h is thicker than the Ford b/h. Yukspeed again for bits. Hope this helps you all.Regards Yuk:cool:
Cheers Yuk all sorted now-changed the bellhousing over as i had straight one instead of 7 degree-this b/h took bolts through ok.:thumb:
