View Full Version : EFI or Weber Carbs on Zetec?
Help me decide.
I'm torn between a pair of Weber 45 DCOE which would suit the car (a 67 MGB) and be easier to plumb in or Jenvey TBs and MS ecu which would be more high tech and possibly make further upgrades easier later on.

its your decision as to what suits you :dunno:
Both would suit me, but take the car in two slightly different directions.
The Weber apeals to my old school with modern engine side
The EFI to my tech geek side ;)

if you wanted to go oldskool stylee, youd have to get one of those lotus-esq cam covers too :D it would look pretty nice then
but i think if you want a challenge go for throttle bodies :D but there is nothing to stop you doing that at a later date as you wont loose much on a second hand pair of webbers

seeing as you need to have an ecu and cranksensor etc to do the ignition you might as well go the whole hog and run injection as well its a lot better and both sounds and looks like a pair of webers anyway
Its purely down to money and the look you want for your car.
I run a pair of 45's on my engine and a period looking cam cover 'cos I want my car to look period.
Probably saved me £1000 over going injection BUT it comes at a price, where I feel I would make no more top end power my car does suffer a little pulling in higher gears at low revs due to lack of air speed.
In saying that, it doesnt bug my to the tune of £1000
You could go for an Fuel & Ignition ECU to start with but with a pair of 45's If you find they arent cutting the mustard then sell the 45's and buy some throttle bodies, injectors, fuel rail, fuel pressure regulator, high pressure pump, swirl pot and all the plumbing and convert to injection :)

The thought has struck me. I might go Webers and MegaSquirt just to be able to upgrade later on. And as someone said I won't loose much on the webers either if I sold them.
If you do go for Webers rather than D'ellorotos make sure you get the webers that are designed to run on the Zetec, rather than just any old pair of 45's
The Zetec specific ones have 5 progression holes which ensures a smooth drive at low speed

Go EFI but remember 45 TBs are not a straight swap for 45 carbs. If you go TBs you will need twin 40s.

:confused::dunno:
45 carbs typically have 34-40mm chokes, throttlebodies dont have any chokes so they should be compared to choke size not to the nominal carb size. But efi systems work much better with "too big" sizes than carbs.
I have 45tb's in 2.0zetec, working fine.
But does this mean that if I by an inlet manifold which states it fits both 45 carbs and TBs it will need blueprinting to fit the carbs? Or is the diameter of the carb outlet still 45?

yes, the carb opens out after the choke to 45mm again (for 45dcoe):thumb:
You live and learn, thanks guys.
I think I'll go Webers and MegaSquirt for ignition controll for now and the option of going TBs later.
I guess we can end the poll. I ended up going DCOEs with 5th progression holes and MegaJolt Lite Jr. Have a look in my build thread for pics.
