I'm sorting out the efi fuel pumping for my escort.

I have a fuel filter between my pump (it's a bosch motorsport jobbie) and engine, but would ideally like to have one between the tank and fuel pump.

Will putting a filter in there cause a problem with fuel flow to the pump as it is gravity fed, causing pump overheating?

The main issue is that the pipe connection on the tank side of the pump is ~10mm so i need a fuel filter with 10mm ends, does anyone know of one?

Cheers

Has your tank got 10mm ends? Im going from the tank to pre-filer then upscaling the pipe to 10mm for the pump.

I'm using a standard escort tank (with a return added), but it has a knackered outlet, so i has just going to make up 10mm outlet to thread into the bottom of the tank.

What size outlets do the works style tanks come with as I will hopefully end up with one of them in the long run.

cheers

On my mk1 tank i drilled out the existing fitting to 10mm and soldered in some 10mm copper plumbing pipe. Push it in so it sits about an inch into the tank to stop sludge getting in. I then soldered on a straight 10mm plumbing yorkshire joint. This gives you a lip to tighten the fuel hose onto.
There are loads of ways of doing this it is just whichever sits happy in your mind. I used a high performance filter from burtons but they are about £60:stu: But it is essential to stop bits getting in the pump.
Apparently B&Q warehouse sell fittings that will screw into the existing threaded part of the tank:thumb:

cheers for the tips.

I definately want some sort of pre filter. but the burtons one is definastely out of my price range.

I have found a dismantleable filter in the garage that i might be able to modify to connect into the tank outlet, or i might try modifying one of these kart filters to go up into the tank.

I saw that on ebay earlier.
I think that is probally what i'll end up getting.
That filter is a toyota part, part number 233019145.

But i can't find anywhere online that stocks hose tails with metric threads so that i could use one from a motorfactors.

Theres a few similar ones listed here, but all with the same hose tail issue.

I bought a couple of filters at an auto jumble for a quid each. You will be able to get them cheap from PartCo and the like.

I am using a standard sierra cossy filter and corresponding pump. Think it should be ok. Filter was cheap from factors. BTW using GSXR tbs :thumb: (eventually):D

do the pumps care where the filter is ? ie pre.... post pump

I would say pre, you want to minimise the risk of contaminants getting into the pump and thus making it more reliable long term, plus it may act as a crude swirl pot, given they volume of them is quite large. btw. was thinking yesterday about the swirl pot issue, would I be right in thinking that 2 concentric steel tubes welded around the fuel outlet inside a standard tank (say 2" and 4" dia.) would give me some swirl pot effect. with a hole cut in the LH of one and the RH of the other, plus a (vented) cap to stop the fuel swishing out the top? Cant afford the space for a separate pot and wish to retain as standard appearance as is possible in the boot.

I would say pre filter given the state of most older fords petrol tanks. It will only take a small amount of debris to stick a pump or an injector. I bought the sytec one shown earlier. You can clean these out if need be:thumb:

i was wondering more about how it affected the pump, suction wise if it makes sense. ie do the pumps "see" the filter ?

Ah, I get you. the resistance caused. Well ford designed the pump for pre filter so it shouldnt give any cause for alarm. I guess it just becomes a regular service item to be sure of consistant performance.
