i was thinking of starting an overrated/underated thread, was a good laugh on the xfm board back in the day

their first album was passable, second was alright.. but formulaic (sp) never bothered with them since as it all seems too predictable and exceptionally dull :D

for me it has to be Oasis.... fair play to them back in the day they put out some good stuff, but in the 15? years since definatly maybe, they really dont sound any different, and by that i mean same cords, same melody... seen them live quite a few times, the first was ace because you know every song and the atmosphere is ace, the second you realise that they arnt even that musically spot on, and any gig after just seems less good/shiney.... not a popular opinion i know, but the last couple of times i seen them i left dissapointed :dunno:

mmm.. first and second albums fantastic, didn't bother with the middle albums but i thought dont belive the truth was good:dunno:

seen oasis at wembly back around 2000 was fantastic the saw them a notts and they shit, saw them a few years ago at man city ground and they were very good.

did go to see travis at sherwood pines last year they were alright, better live than on cd.

i know someone who worked on the oasis album that was binned a couple of years back,he said they aint got a clue.done all the copying now and don't have an original thought.but why would you give a shit with all that money :) went to shit from the 3rd album on.
the xfm board used to be a good laugh.is it even still alive ? the station aint worth a wank anyway now!

Always thought with oasis that they released two of the best albums ever, first (in my opinion :D) so they were always going to be impossible to follow up. Some stuff since has been pretty good, just overshadowed by their old stuff.

I think noel gallagher is massively talented. Good on guitar, excellent lyrics and a far better singer than liam. A few of the acoustic solo sets he used to do were absolutely awesome.

Could never see what the all the fuss was about with Oasis, all they ever seemed to do was play regurgitated rock n roll, never anything that hadn't already been done by bands from the 60's and 70's.
Music was average but the vocals were just bloody irritating.
Just my opinion.

steely dan
15-04-2008, 09:16
im glad its not just me, i usually get shot down in flames to moment i say that :D noel was always the talented one, defo better without liam but hes said many times he dosnt enjoy being the frontman so its very much the organ grinder and monkey type setup.

there is still and xfm board of sorts. but they changed the daytime format completely and brought out some crappy 'interactive' thing. basically like a myface x-list jukebox thing... their big claim was that you could pick all the songs you wanted.. so its alot like playing all your own music but with them repeated 3 times a day and adverts inbetween (no Djs 10-4) and there was a whole 'web community' thing to go with it... i wrote emails to them and said they'd finally killed xfm with the most rediculous idea ever, altho it be fair it was dieing a slow death anyway... havent listened since, 6music is better but still a bit too radio2 for my liking

Oasis have done alot for guitar sales tho:D Got some great learning tracks.

Have to agree with U2, Sunday Bloody Sunday and other early tracks very good but gone down hill ever since, lots of bands seem to get lost up their own arse and move away from the style/music that made them famous. I guess I shouldn't critisise for bands wanting to move on but they normally make a real hash of it:dunno:

Pobably get shot down now but I think The Beatles and Rolling Stones are very over rated, nothing more than average in my book.

Have to agree with Jon, on the Beatles, don't see what the fuss is all about. okay so maybe a few good tracks in their time but, people who idolise every last note, are taking it a bit to far. Some of the hippy stuff really makes me wonder if they weren't just peddling rubbish music, in a over indulgent drug induced scam. Just my thoughts you understand...

Bruce Springsteen ....

" i've got a great lyric ..its ' born in the USA' .. what do you all reckon ?"

"yeah its great Bruce "

"ok heres the song.........

Born in the USA
Born in the USA
born in the USA
I was born in the USA
Born in the USA
Born in the USA
Born In the USA "

"but Bruce what about some more lyrics"

"ok i'll make it political........ pass me the newspaper .. ohh yeah Vietnammmm baby"

Sorry but its a crap song and the only other song that the vast majority of people can name is from an oscar winning movie. Its a good song .. but thats 2 songs from one of the biggest artist in America ..

Oh and Micheal Jacksons music should be banned ... his music put him in a position of trust which he abused. He should join Jonathen King and Gary Glitter. Never did rate thriller .. good video though.

The Beatles .. happy pop songs? or messages? dunno.. as for Imagine, shame its from a speech by Adolph Hitler. 'cos i really like that song.

Buddy Holly .. 14 month career and not one song written by him.. and yet his up in the all the greats ???

The best Musician since 1968 ..... David Bowie .. even when hes taking the piss out of the music press he writes a winner .. The Laughing Gnome.

The Beatles? They were awesome. The hype isn't for nothing you know. Have you listened to the Magical Mystery Tour album or Abbey Road? John Lennon must have been proud when he composed I Am The walrus:thumb: George Harrison wrote Something and Here Comes The Sun. Paul came up with Yesterday from a dream he had! ..WTF? Even Ringo had some good moments - Don't Pass Me By is great! These people were not only great song writers but amazing musicians too. How many classic Beatles riffs and lyrics can you think of? :woohoo:

True, David Bowie and other legendary song writers are superior in some ways and may have more of an edge, but the diversity in their back catalogue just doesn't come close. Take The Stones for example; they have put out some great stuff but it's all pretty much based on the same blues and rock and roll progressions. If you want proof that the Beatles were geniuses listen to Michelle, Penny Lane, Help, Happyness Is A Warm Gun... I could go on forever.. well, for a very long time.

Leave The Beatles alone:rsocmoan:

xfm died a long time ago, i remember when it used to be good, but that was back in 2000. i finally got fucked off when i requested a song to be played, they called me, spoke to me, then edited the phone call to enable them to play a song i didn't request.

iron maiden - good guitars, awful voice

Will someone please tell me why the Beatles are over-rated? There's a lot on here that i don't agree with and a lot that I do. I really think that people should justify their choice and have a bit of a think about it because some of these bands are legendary .. Queen? The reasons given for them being over-rated were .. well, not exactly good reasons.

for me i cant stand The Foo Fighters..

Their none offensive mild rock is so gash, this is dave grohl for god sake, the John Bonham obsessed drummer from Nirvanna, just all sounds the same now, just wish theyd go sick and put a bit of effort in.

Also chilli peppers, saw them at leeds fest last year and turned out to be the biggest dissapointment and most boring band ive ever watched.

X-PACK:

I agree in a way, but sometimes you can just listen to a band and it does nothing, Queen as a band were fantastic, one of the best, not because of heavy riffs, not because john deacon and brian may were fantasic musicians but because it all just gelled, and Freddie knew how to control a crowd. My only complaint with queen was roger taylor just did the same beat pretty much to most songs.

its all a matter of opinion at the end of the day, i dont like muse coz i think they over use effects, as a blues musician i think if you cant play it with just a guitar and an amp then you shouldnt play it, but doesnt mean there shit, just means i dont like them.

Still cant beat Led Zeppelin lol.. they dick on every1 :D

I've heard from people that the chillis were crap at Reading/Leeds too. I've seen them 3 times live (London Arena, Wembly and Hyde Park I think) and thought they were really good. Hyde park was amazing and much better than the London Arena one so they must be a bit variable. Maybe they didn't get their own toilets at the festival and were a bit arsey :D

The Stranglers. The best thing about the 1970's heroin praising chaparajos The Stranglers is the name of the band. Trying to come up with a good name for a band is flippin difficult. The reason for this is because you keep thinking of all the other cool band names like The Stranglers. The Police. The Who, etc, etc.. It would be like trying to write the perfect Christmas love song but all you keep thinking of that Wham song - Last Christmas - and then you just give up cos bastird George Michael really cornered the market with that one. This is perhaps the reason why my band settled on the second rate name 'Jackhammer'.. I don't like it but The Stranglers is already taken:rolleyes:

.. then I guess Elvis was the Robbie Williams of his day ...

Individually the Beatles were possibly over rated (maybe not George - he was a legend), but as a group they were fantastic. I've always found it strange that people compare them to Take That who are a group that have never moved away from one particular style of music .. they're still at it now! same shit but a bit better (I do actually like some of their new stuff). If I was going to compare the Beatles to a modernish pop act then i would have to compare them to Blur. They had a lot of different stuff going on but still managed to just about remain commercial while at the same time alienating some of their original fans with more contemporary material - exactly like the Beatles did after the Help! album.

Nige S
14-05-2008, 08:28
Bit of a difficult subject this one really.
The reason many bands became highly rated in the first place was the fact that they might have tried a something a little different for the era, Black Sabbath started in 1965, what else was there around at that time that even came close?
The Beatles weren't just about the music, Lennon & McCartney were songwriters to a lot of the acts that didn't write their own material.
I suppose it is easy to suggest that a band is overrated because their music isn't liked, I'm guilty of suggesting that, but I would still love to be able to front a band, play an instrument or write songs, a thing to take into account which makes a huge proportion of bands pretty much the same really.
My cousin is getting married to band member of the Fratellies (I think that is how it's spelt) I've never heard their music so should be an interesting debate when I've had a few shandy's.

Sorry, I just hate them with a passion, it's not decent music and I resent them being wealthy for it! :D

your not kidding:clint: .. you try making a comment against so called 'new talent' on a forum such as YouTube and the fans jump down your throat. I listened to some band called Melt Banana (who are as crap as they sound) on YouTube and I commented that the lead singer sounded like Yoko Ono on an off day, and the rest of the band sounded like the blokes who wrote 1980's kids TV themes had got pissed and then gone mental with guitars and Casio home organs:D

They weren't happy:rsocmoan:

I liked Shiney Happy People but that was it. That new one is crap and people treat them like god. WTF? ... and the guitarist thinks he's the bollocks!

im big REM fan and if you liked SHP then your taste is shit as its one of the worst songs theyve done :lmao:

I guess I have shit taste in music then. Thanks for pointing that out to me:thumb:

The thing with REM is that it isn't really the music that I don't like ..it's the band members. That guitarist is a pratt. He suffers from the Yngwie Malmsteen effliction of claiming himself 'Best Guitarist In The World'. Sounds like too much coke to me. I also think that Stipey has copied Morrisey and Prince with his stupid mid nineties arty protests

To me REM are quite like U2. They are an absolutely massive band who started out ok but their latest stuff is complete dross that if they released in the early days wouldn't have gone anywhere. Paul McCartney, David Bowie and The Eagles are the same except they had decent songs to start with. I reckon they just produce stuff for the hell of it and maybe to promote a new tour or something. Even Madness are at it!

Thank Christ The Police didn't do the same. I respect the fact that Sting, Stu and Andy are blatantly doing it for the money. You can even buy a replica of Andy Summers Fender Tele for $15,000:clint: ..and it's a piece of shit.

To my mind the only band who have come back and done something decent were ..erm.. Blondie?:dunno: Squeeze and Duran Duran did some ok tunes in the nineties but they had the good grace to disappear again

Please tell me what is good about REM. I suppose i'm missing the point. SHP was good in 91 or whenever it came out. Baring in mind I was only 15 then, I was into all kinds of crap. That one about shoving an elephant up some stairs was ok'ish and Losing My Religion. Not bad

Hey mate i agree with you. REM are no way near the band they were as far as new music and albums are concerned. ALL bands peak! But as far as live performances, they are still outstanding. they are renowned for their live sets.

Anyways im not out to prove who is crap and who isnt, i just found what you said about Shiney happy people funny! Its shit!

As for Peter buck the lead guitarist being shit. Well, its been said by many top guitar players that he has one of the best right hands in the business! So take that as you please! Maybe they meant tossin LMAO!

With REF to Floyd and Zeplin. Ive never said they arent top bands....just they are what this thread is about...Over rated!

The Rolling Stones are another!

Mike Stipe has always been very political and very outspoken on war issues etc. REM do mass amounts for worldwide charities. Nowt wrong with that!

Whats good about REM. Nothing if you dont like them LMFAO! To me, i just like how they vary it up so much. Not a single album sounds the same. They dare to experiment. As a rule, tracks released into the mainstream charts arent what i regard as their best work.... but its what, or used to, sell! Thats warner bros doing though not REM...

Anyways! Lets talk about the shit of today! The awesome Ting tings

I know threads like these can surprise but I don't know how you can crticise the lyrics of Springsteen, u2 at all.

Bono does get up your nose a bit I accept and born in the usa was not the bosses great but they have done plenty of other stuff that just make you have to pinch yourself the lyrics are that good.

have a listen to

unforgettable fire or So cruel by u2
or
downbound train or thunder road by the BOSS

Mind you

I do agree with the Oasis consensous of opinion

didn't really like any of there stuff.

would much rather listen to simple minds but perhaps I'm still stuck in the 80's when even the cheesy lyrics of some bands still sounded much more interesting than todays stuff.

hmmm... I agree with the overrated part, but the the two songs you've mentioned are the ones I would've picked as overrated

IMO they had two good studio albums... "Bleach" and "In Utero"

"Nevermind" has a few good tracks towards the end of the album, but the rest is average and definately overrated.

Although more of a complilation and not a studio album, my favourite album they released was "Incesticide" :thumb:

Well you were seven years old when Cobain killed himself, not having a go or anythink but i think you kinda had to be there. At the time to me nirvana were incredible in fact would still rate them as one of my favourites but each to their own as they say.
