Thought i'd post a few pictures of my 88 2wd sapphire as she undergoes restoration.
I bought the car last year and there were a few marks here and there and i knew i'd never be happy until she was perfect so i decided to get her fully restored.

Here she is stripped down for inspection and beneath the muck it was quite sound we decided it needed 4 new door skins and 2 new back arches and a few minor dents and scrapes doing.

http://media.turbosport.co.uk/PREDA/145336329936981.jpg

Thats a Ferrari Dino 246GT on the lift at top left so she's in good company!

The doors were took off the skins removed and the shells were sandblasted back to bare metal.

http://media.turbosport.co.uk/PREDA/878856837749481.jpg

The back outer arches were then cut away to reveal this little lot even though they seemed sound enough

At the moment it has had all the doors refitted and the arches done the rest of the body is now to be finished off.

I want her back asap because i've got all these lovely bits to go on her!

Anything mechanical i can deal with but i haven't got the patience for bodywork so i leave it to the experts.

Sandblasting the door frames revealed small areas of corrosion such as this,

http://media.turbosport.co.uk/PREDA/350444972515106.jpg

so small welded repairs were made,

Kieron, it's going to be the best part of 3k for all the work and thats with me doing the bulk of refitting all the door inards and trim etc to keep costs down.
To think i only went in to get a price to touch a couple of bits up!

Steve

Kieron
11-01-2002, 17:51
WOW... Mind you thay are doing it properley!!! Although you could buy another 2WD for that.

Always the way though, just popped in for a price on a couple of little bits and end up having a full blown resto...

Still its nice to see someone taking care of one of these cars. The're mostly being run into the ground now as the're so cheap or broken for parts! I wonder what the situation will be like in another 15 years time? People will be restoring sheds and lavishing them like whats happening the AVO cars now.

Hi m8. Its a very small world . I know John He's one of my neighbours. and if the standard of his own cars is anything to go by yours will be better than new when he has finished with it. Keep us posted. Cheers. Rick.

Hello Rick, yes John is a nice bloke and the quality of his work is excellent, he did a capri for me last year and repaired a previously bodged job by a main dealer to an excellent standard.

All the other parts like bonnet, bumpers and doors etc were in the spray booth being sprayed. i've been promised i will have it back in time for the Cumbrian RSOC show on May 6th.
My collection of bits to go on her once i get her back seems to have grown too!

Marshall,

I think the eighties cars are a lot better than the seventies ones, for examples of serious rust take a look at my site.

It's not surprising though, the underbody protection used to be terrible, I have seen press photos of new cars coming off of the line at AVO plant and you can see shiny bare steel on the floors http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clint.gif

stevedohc16v
03-06-2002, 12:27
I believe those chassis rails are a common place for the sierras to go and i was expecting that some work would be required, those rails sit right above the rear subframe mounting bushes and the compression loads on the chassis section cause them to be 'squashed' ever so slightly, this cracks the paint coatings on the outside and inside of the chassis rail and this allows the rust to get a hold.

Steve

stevedohc16v
08-06-2002, 20:55
Finished the rear end at last http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif I fabricated new chassis rail sections and welded them in (took 3 days http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/shocked.gif, i was welding in my sleep!) fitted new springs, shocks drop link arms, bearings etc and painted/ undersealed/ waxoyled everything.

Not strictly part of the restoration but i thought i'd post some pics of my electric sunroof conversion as it's been a bit quiet in this section.
I got the parts cheap off the RSOC bb, when i went to fit it there was no way it was just going to bolt on, the splines left when the sunroof handle is removed and those on the electric sunroof unit are totally different only two of the six mounting holes are there, the relay unit has to be relocated and of course none of the wiring was there. I even e-mailed a few people who had included in their sapphire 2wd specs 'electric sunroof conversion' to ask how they fitted it and all 3 who replied said 'well i've got the bits there just not fitted yet'!
To cut a long (4 days) story short i eventually got it all fitted, worst bit was lining the interior of the car out with dust sheets while i ground off the splines on the operating mechanism and cut new ones in with my dremel.
It works a treat and i even swopped the origional switch for a Mondeo passenger door electric window switch as it has the bulb inside so it will illuminate at night with the lights on (cos i'm a fussy bugger http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif )

Thought i'd stick a couple of pics up of the fitting of my Renault Laguna splitter as it's a common mod and may be of interest.
I had to fit something as my origional rubber splitter was removed when i had the bodywork done.
The splitter can be ordered from Renault, part No R77 00818802 costs a bit more than i thought £65.21 http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/shocked.gif
Anyway this is how you get it from Renault
http://media.turbosport.co.uk/2002/8/200287194846333706.JPG
First thing to do is cut the locating lugs off the back of the splitter as these stop it sitting flat on the bottom of the bumper,
http://media.turbosport.co.uk/2002/8/200287195131269161.JPG
As below
http://media.turbosport.co.uk/2002/8/200287195429343105.JPG
The next thing to do is drill a hole at the centre of the splitter which is marked up so not a problem, where the old splitter has been removed there is a handy hole also in the centre of the bottom of the bumper, so the first job to do is rivet the centre of the splitter to the centre of the bottom of the bumper which gives you a start point, by the way the splitter comes with black headed rivets for affixing it.
http://media.turbosport.co.uk/2002/8/200287195722432293.JPG
Once the centre has been affixed then just drill and rivet the rest of the splitter http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/tongue.gif It's easy to keep the splitter to the bumpers contour as it's very flexible.
Next thing you'll notice is that the ends are too long
http://media.turbosport.co.uk/2002/8/20028720352733761.JPG
But the splitter is easily trimmed to shape with a sharp knife
http://media.turbosport.co.uk/2002/8/20028720556211055.JPG
And that's it http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif
I took some before and after pics but my digital camera isn't too hot!
I think you can just about make it out.

Hi Lee, the secs monitor is very easy to fit, it comes with full instructions and as long as you're not colour blind it's a pop to fit http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/wink.gif
Seen your restoration thread and your's looks beautiful m8, I wish mine was half as clean as that underneath. http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/drool.gif
