Pics and description of Kieron's adjustable struts I have just built.
Started off by finding a pair of Capri type legs with good stub axles, (always get the ones with the bolt on steering arms).
Strip all the unboltable components off.

Then remove the inserts

Cut through the old spring platforms with a grinder, just above the welds, and knock them off.

I masked the stub axles with lots of tank tape and had the struts sand blasted, then ground off the remains of the welds for the old spring platforms.

After some careful measuring the threaded tubes were welded in place.

Some strengthening "Wedges" were cut from 4mm steel plate, clamped to the strut then welded in to place.

They were then treated to a thick coat of blue Plastikote paint, before the new AVO top adjustable inserts were fitted.

Just waiting for springs now
I'm very, very impressed.
I was a bit sceptic after the first few pics with all that rust.. But then at the end it's all very good.
How do you get the new threaded section in the correct position before welding ?
What's the reason for doing it ? To save money or aren't they available ?
Very nice m8 How much do you charge for your work and how much were the bits (inserts coil over kit etc)

Panza,
The reason for doing it was as it is much cheaper than Leda would charge for a set of adjustable coilovers.
To get the threaded tubes in the correct position measure them in relation to the top cup height for the springs you want to run, then allow for top and bottom adjustment, I held them in place with tank tape at the top then welded the bottom.
Clint,
Cost of the adjuster kit, spanner and springs was £121 with delivery, you can get cheaper ones but the collars and spring mounts are nasty compared to these, these are machined from billet and the others are rough cast, although if you aren't fussed about that they will save about £20.
Sandblasting is £5 thanks to a nice old boy locally who used to race MK1 Escorts.
For stripping, fitting making up the wedges, rebuilding and painting I will charge £70
With these struts Kieron wanted fully adjustable so he purchased a pair of AVO top adjustable inserts which cost about £200, but the same work could be done on a set of Capri/Escort Bilsteins to make an excellent pair of struts but without the adjustable damping, or even standard RS ones just to have the coil/ rideheight adjustment.

Only problem is the slight (cough cough) accident damage to the rear! http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif Pictures of my new Pimp mobile to follow!
