A guy at works son imports cars from Japan (Gto's etc..) and someone else wants him to bring over a skyline.

What varieties are there, and the differences and costs & peoples opinions of which are best?

All I know is R34, R34 as model numbers..

Is there a good place to get info on the web, and also some pictures?

Cheers
Hugh

I was speaking to a guy with an R32( I think, ..not the newest but still modern looking) at a track day. He had big trouble with it overheating and told me that he wish he'd got the V-spec version as it has all sorts of modifications to help it take a little abuse. Just thought it might be of interest. ....it was still rapid though...

Cheers Mate,
I am interested in absolutely anything that tells me more about these beasts.
Buying (choosing), owning (maintaining) them and using them (groups?) are all things I have a lot to learn about!.

Cheers

Hi,

There are many variants. The more recent models are R32, 33 and 34. There are various combinations available, with varying engine sizes, normal aspiration , turbo, twin turbo,4 wd, and rear wheel steering..

Most common in the UK is the R33 GTST which gives you 6 cylinders, 2500cc, single turbo and about 250 hp.
Next up is the R33 GTR which is also 6 cylinder, 2600cc, twin turbo, 4wd and around 275 hp ( I think)

Prices range from £6000 ish to £55000 dependant on age / model etc. A good starter R33 GTST with GTR bodykit would cost the best part of £10,000 ish.

The huge attraction with them is that they are very capable of being taken to incredible hp, with relatively little effort.

Be warned though, most are group 20+ insurance, and parts and servicing can be difficult / expensive. Mega fun though!

Try these links, you'll see plenty of 500+ hp owners there !

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the links, I shall have a look at them after posting this! http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/cool.gif

I'm used to 20+ insurance and expensive parts, but I'm not usedto having so much choice! I didn't know they had that many different setups, so I have obviously a lot to learn. You sound very well informed... do you have/had one?

Cheers Chap

Hugh,

Yes, I have a 33 GTST. Recently fitted a GTR rear wing and Magnex exhaust and 17" Kosei wheels. Mines an auto ( which I prefer as I use it for long distance work) which is another option I forgot to mention ! It had 27K on it when I bought it, which I'm sure was genuine - general interior condition, under bonnet like new, little wear on discs etc etc.
They are a real nice motor, but the interior, while being 'ok' is typical nissan. They're not noted for being particularly flash or filled with gizmo's. Some do have TV installed, but it needs serious conversion to work over here. Most that had it, have it taken out. They are more known for the engine - 6 cylinder and a turbo is a great mix. The rear wheel steering works at speed to assist cornering - not like Hondas for parking. The GTRs 4wd is truly awesome.
If you need any other info, let me know. http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smirk.gif

Hi Bob,

What's a 250 GT? seen 2 of them now on L plates? What would 15k - 17.5k buy you? What sort of spec etc and what age?

Cheers

Magrah,

Never heard of a 250GT - there was a 200GT in the 60's, but I doubt thats what you've seen.
Theres a pretty good history of Skylines here -----http://www.skylinesdownunder.co.nz/history/history.html
they've been out for 40 years in one form or another.

Carefull scouring should find you a good R33 GTR for that sort of money. Check the links I posted before. I'd advise you really know the difference between models before you leap - though I'm sure thats obvious anyway !
For that sort of money you should find something like a 94 - 96, 2.6litre 6 cyclinder, twin turbo, 4wd, rear wheel steering, climate with a/c. Many GTR's have serious mods on them.
Some dealers ask silly money, but bear in mind some of these motors were over £50k new.
I have however had some communication with some Jap companies and know there are some good personal imports available for less than £10K. 'Course yer pays yer money, yer takes yer chance.
As with any specialist motor, you need to read the forums for a while to get an idea of whats around. The GTST is far more popular, with a 2.5l - 6 cyclinder, single turbo giving 250hp. Most have rear wheel steering (HICAS), climate etc etc and they're a lot more affordable. These can be had for as little as £5k for a rough one or with higher mileage, but a tidy 94 - 96 would probably be around £7 / 8 / 9K private or £9 - 12K in a dealer.
Could be a nice little GTST for sale soon 'oop north http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/wink.gif

Cheers Bob

So basically the single turbo's a re pretty cheap but the twin's cost allot more, found this in the trader

1995 Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R V-Spec, 95, M reg . 54000 miles, black, taxed, MoT, CD, fsh by Abbey, full Blitz NUR Spec R exhaust, Nizmo clutch, 400 bhp, Apexi induction, alarm, Tracker fitted, . £15,995.

What is the power output of the above car standard 300bhp? and what's the standard performance.

Cheers again

Hi Mag,

R33 GTST 2.5M
2.5 litre - 6 cyclinder - single turbo - vtec inlet valves.
0 - 60mph - 6.7sec. Top speed 165mph delimited.

R33 GTR
2.6 litre - 6 cyclinder - twin turbo - vtec inlet valves - 280 PS
0 - 60mph - 4.9sec. Top speed 155mph limited ( not sure what it is with limiter off - a bit irrelevant on UK roads)

The v spec GTR is 280 PS standard. (Was £50K new import) The ad doesn't say whats on it to give 400. There is another version known as the Nismo 400 ( Was £65K new import ) which is......wait for it.......400PS http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif

The price sound good for a v-spec, but its all down to condition, just as with any motor. I have seen a couple of nice shiny ones around, but on closer inspection I thought they had either been on the track or were clocked. The overall condition just didn't 'fit' with the mileage. Worn pedals, heavy worn discs, worn edges on seats etc.
The decision you face if your thinking of one, is do you go for the GTST with 250PS or a, twice the price, GTR with 270. The GTR has all the bodykit as standard and 4wd but all the kit is available for the GTST.
The GTR is definitly a better performance car, with mega high tuning potential but do you really want 500hp on the road? (There are 1000hp ones around too ! )
The GTST also has a ceramic turbo, which limits the extra boost you can apply - though there are plenty of steel upgrades around. As I said before though, check out the links - all the info you need is there. Theres just too much out there for me to tell you it all !
Finally, there are 1153 Skylines in the country which makes them pretty rare. A GTST is a rare car - If you have a GTR then you have the rarest of the rare ! But it takes a Skyline owner or an anorak to tell the difference.

magrah,
price is about right for an import gtr, in average condition.
there is a huge differance between a gtr and a gts.
there are numerous versions of each skyline, be it gts or gtr, v-spec, nur, nurII, 400r ,gts type m,type s, type4rs etc etc etc,
for a imformative site goto www.gtr.co.uk/forum. (http://www.gtr.co.uk/forum.)
