View Full Version : How much to spend...

I'm after a 4x4 sapphire. probably in the next 10 months (know its a long time, but i've got a little bit more to save, and want to get a good one, so no rush). What i would like to know from you guys, with your collective amount of experience, is how much to pay, and if its worth lookin for the precise car i want. in particular i want: a 4x4 sapphire, in moonstone blue, completely standard, with FFSH, and on standard (late spec) 4x4 rims (although not too bothered if its on early saff rims). But will i even find a standard one? And if so how much should i pay for the mileage? How many are about like this?
I'd prefer a standard one cos i'm only 19 (20 by the time i buy though) and insurance is a nightmare, and i dont want it to be modified because i think they're perfectly quick enough (to start with at least). Its not that i'm against modding it (far from it), but i'd like to do my mods, my way, thats all.
Cheers guys.

Trying to find a standard saff is like trying to find rocking horse shit. They do come up but when they do its more than likley someone has left it in there lock up and has no miles on it and wants the earth for it. Also the colour you want is had to get aswell. Your best bet is to look for an "almost" standard car (exhaust chip filter) with low miles around the 60-70k mark. In mint nick you will need around 6k plus. Oh and insurance im 23 and my 3 door with 17,s exhaust cage filter 350bhp is gonna cost over 2 grand and if your 20 I reckon you,ll be looking at the same modded or not. Best of luck mate http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif

Ahh three door boy you do make me feel better re insurance i just had to shelve out £1,200 on my M3 http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif

Just to add there are peeps who reckon you can get a mint 4x4 for £4k but I have yet to see these cars and peeps have differenct perceptions of 'mint' I recently sold a 4x4 and i would class that as mint but only because everyone who saw it said it was the best one they had seen and one chap said the only better one was one that he had seen with 12K on the clock and that was kept in an oxygen free enviroment but the bloke wanted £14k odd for it.

Although i don't doubt if your quick of the mark you can pick up a bargain off someone who is desperate to sell. You have to beat the traders also who love picking up cheap cossie's to break them.

I'd agree and say your looking at 6k-12k depending on what you want but the good ones the lower the mileage the more it is generally worth.

Cheers for that dudes, i was expectin those sorts of figures (ish). I'm not too fussy about filter chip&exhaust, as long as its all done well. My mate found a standard saff (except de-locked&escy cos rims) off some middle aged bloke. i'm not too sure whether to go for A1 and not have to bother too much with her, or get a nice one with miles and wait for it to pop, then spend the rest on a rebuild... to MY spec (hehe)
Ideally though, i want a moonstone version of the sapphire up in the competition at RSOC Donninton. FFSH, 43k and standard (i think) but if i could find one i'm bracin myself for a 10k+ price tag for it.
i dunno, i may just get a 'cheap' one at first, then move up as&when.
Cheers guys. http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/wall.gif

Hope you find the right car.

But look at this tale of RS ownership before you embark on a quest for ultimate power.

what insurance company will even touch you at 19 on a grp20 car?

i'm 19 and i struggled to find someone to insure me on my XR4x4 (grp14). i paid about 3k 3rd party with the car standard, and i now pay just over 4.5k since it's had the TwinTurbo conversion.

whenever i ask about insuring a cosworth the just laugh at me.

£4.5K http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/shocked.gif http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/shocked.gif http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/shocked.gif

I moan about paying £175 http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif

try tesco for your insurance. Don't laugh, they might be able to do a good deal. There some young uns on the RSOC paying nowhere near that for their cossies.

To be honest, i have no idea how i'm to be insured. I hope that the locked/alarmed garage, the cat1 car alarm, tracker, and snap off steering wheel will go some way to helping me gat a reasonable quote, but then again, i dont give a shit, so long as i'm legally insured, i dont care how much i spend. I'd buy a fiat punto if i wanted a small insurance premium! http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/jester.gif

Jay dee, I know what you mean you get some very very young drivers with Cossie's these days and it does make me wonder how they insure the f-ers. Maybe they are prepared to pay the 2k odd!

Recomend Tesco's they were the cheapest on my M3 Evo!

Stevenoz
23-10-2002, 22:28
Hmm i must give tescos a shout, see what they can do for me. I'm also contemplating joining the Institute Of Advanced Motorists to get a further reduction on the policy. I know, i'll ring them for a quote on a standard cosworth, and for modified to different standards, and get back to y'all soon with the (large) numbers.

JayDee

how how how how how?

i must admit my car's in a high group, and modified for power therefore i have a large premium... buy a cos is a group 20 car!! 20 ffs... it doesnt get any higher than that! if you were an insurance company, would you let someone 19 drive a car that in their eyes is a VERY VERY VERY high risk?

i can understand how yuou get 20 odd year olds in RS Turbos coz that's affordable (high, but still afordable) but when i see people trhat look younger than me driving around in an Evo?!?! they must be either MINTED or something illegal's going on.

oh and mate, if you want 4x4 power in a sierra shell try an XR4x4. (or XR4x4 Turbo) they're cheaper and damn quick (the turbo ones are faster than std cos) VERY VERY underated cars. and you can pick em up for silly money (have seen turbo ones going for as little as 1k) they may not look very good as std but with the money you save you can buy a brand new full cos kit from ford!

I know i know i know i know. but like i said, its the car i love, and i'm prepared to pay. lots. i was thinkin of puttin it as a second car on a limited miles policy. i dunno, i dont own 1 yet anyway, so when i have one, and its insured, i'll let you know.
And yes i have thought of an XR4x4, my mate has one. its not that bad, but i want a sapphire really. Not seen any 4x4 turbos, i can believe they r quick tho!! http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/wall.gif

read the Dec issue of Performance Ford, theres a feature on XR Turbos (mostsly XR4s)

the single Turbo XR4is are pretty quick

stuart's 265bhp mad 0-60 in 6.3 due to traction probs

and the 4x4 twin turbos are brilliant

my 230-280bhp (dunno what bhp it is coz its never been on rollers) made 6.1 secs with knackered clutch and turbo only making 6psi

and Rob Williams 4x4 Turbo (350+ bhp @ 15psi) was 4.x seconds (that includes 1st->2nd and 2nd->3rd gearchanges!!)

also with the twinturbo setup you come on boost at about 1500-2000rpm and some cossies its 3500+rpm its more like driving a supercharged car than a turbocharged one http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif

oh, and hve you tried to get a quote on a cosworth yet?

^Mick^

Wont Robs car do 60 in second ?

wes
08-11-2002, 12:31
I have incar video of my 4x4 cossie doing 0-60 in 4 seconds (with wheel spin) and it did 70mph in second gear, if only i had somewhere to upload it to http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif

i had a mk1 sierra xr4x4 turbo technic m8 and it blew a cossie to bits i now have a mk2sierra xr4x4 and it keeps up with my m8's escort cossie and sounds better than the cossie due to the lurvely 2.9i v6 and a lot less things to go wrong

jesus!! 0-60 i 4 secs!!! hahahahaha!! nuts. is yr car the black 450+bhp saff, quad lights, imolas & evo 6 rear spoiler? saw it in PF (or fast ford, i forget now) and it looks great mate.
Not got quotes for cossie yet, i'm flat out at work at the moment, and lookin for a new car too, but will get quotes posted ASAP. should be a giggle, if they'll quote me!! also read that XR turbo thing in PF, and was impressed. Seeein as the mods were tame, (no low comp, 12 injector, 2xT4 hybrid setups) they were quick.
2 of my mates had a thrash last night, aforementioned XR4x4 against nissan micra 1.3 16v. both cars had 2 passengers, and the XR had about 1/4 tank, compared to micra which was admittedly runnning on fumes. Results: kinda even off the line, micra pulled 1/2 length thru 1st&2nd, then XR pulled back level above 70mph. it is a quick micra though... although not the quickest. I hear whispers that a turbo micra matched an evo6 running 320ish bhp!!! check out www.rcdevelopments.co.uk (http://www.rcdevelopments.co.uk) (i think thats right) to read about it.

Heres the vid of it:

http://www.wesroom.freeserve.co.uk/launch_incar_noLC.AVI

Yes m8 it was in FastFord (http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/mad.gif) a while ago, but it has a totally different engine spec now, and brakes, and gearbox, and diffs http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif

Ripper, must have been a standard cossie mate, they're not that fast standard, the amount of times i've heard "yeah i raced a cossie and beat it", then the look on their faces when i race them in mine or take them out in it is just too funny http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/jester.gif

Stevenoz
13-11-2002, 23:20
Why'd ya change the spec? i can guess why brakes etc.. have changed, but was it for more power, or reliabilty?

wes
14-11-2002, 12:12
It was for more reliable power, i've sacraficed a little throttle response, but i can work around that http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/wink.gif There is more top end power too http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif

Stevie

yep the cossie was a standared one same as my xr only thing is that the xr is rated at 160bhp as standared weres as the cossie is about 20-30 bhp more standared and boy was he gutted heheheh but the cossie is esier to tune than the v6

liked the vid u posted hehehe

okay all, i'm back, clutching insurance quotes aplenty and with all sorts of ideas spinning in my head. Here goes:
Tesco will insre me on a 1990 4x4 saff, in my name, in my garage, with cat1 alarm/immob, FULLY COMPREHENSIVE for £1800. Dropping the cover to TPFT lowers the premium to £1340. However, thats with 2 yrs no claims. if i should conjure a cossie from nowhere in 6 months (when i'll have 1yr no claims-hopefully) then tesco wont quote me, but i got a quote from one of the insurers in PF for just over £2600.
So which do i buy? A cossie or an XR4x4 turbo? fair enough, the XR is the cheapest to buy, and a turbo one will beat a STANDARD cossie (on paper at least-i've never raced the two)
But how many cossies are still standard?

wes

It was a rhetorical question, but as you put it so neatly wes, i do believe i shall be lookin for a cossie. same as before: moonstone saff (or 3dr) as standard. mmmm. not bothered if its 2 or 4wd, each have their own benefits.

wes
22-11-2002, 12:36
That'll depend on driving preference, if you like tail out action then has to be 2wd, if you want to scare the shit out of people when launching / cornering / 4 wheel drifting at very high speed then get a 4x4 http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif

Stevenoz
22-11-2002, 19:24
mmm, i think 4x4 has preference at the minute-seein as i'd mainly use it for the odd santa pod blast/track day. it might have to do the odd shunt to work to piss off the bloke who works in the unit opposite me-he has a (really shoddy) cossie replica. its probably a 1.6 aswell.
4x4 it is then. Standard, moonstone (or black). mmm http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/drool.gif

wes
23-11-2002, 10:55
Good luck finding a factory black 4x4, they only made 25 black ones, and i don't know about the other 24 but mine isn't for sale http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif

Stevenoz
23-11-2002, 19:51
