although it was a while ago, i remember seeing a company advertising 2.4 litre cossie engines.
I was wondering how the conversion was done, wether it uses just a (much) longer stroke or if its a different block or what?
i was just (day)dreaming up a monster engine and i was thinkin of this conversion, a T4, 8 injectors etc, but would it cope with large boost, and if so, how much power/torque could you hope for? i would imagine 450bhp and masses of torque, but what advantages/disadvantages are there?
I'm just curious. Any advice appreciated. http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif

Collins and Power Engineering were amonst two tuners who did this conversion, It was new crank rods and pistons the original block was machined so the rods missed the block.

Farndon have these cranks on the shelf circa £1200 and arrows make the rods £800 and coswortthe pistons £600 http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif

hmmm thats £2600. would it absolutely fly or is it best to spend that money on the 2.0 litre engine?
Questions, questions.. http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smirk.gif

I've heard more than a few people say that it's a very dissapointing conversion. I can't remember what the reasons were but they were fundamental ones.

If it was a good conversion then there would be at least one car with it in each months Fast Ford of Performance Ford magazine.

it doesnt rev as well and runs out of steam high up the rev range apparently and cant handle any more than 400 bhp as the crank isnt strong enough (it was designed for an N/A application)

Daz - That is EXACTLY what I was thinking but couldn't remember for sure so didn't want to say it. http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/cool.gif

Sue Collins 'Fastest Sapphire' was 650HP aparently and 2.4l so that blows all the text book theories out the window as usual http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif

wow http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/shocked.gif 650HP!!??
Jesus, that would be fast. I heard of a 650hp saff in norway (same one?) and there was 'that' 615hp jobby 3dr (also in norway). I think one of the quotes was something like 'i like to race F40's' http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clint.gif http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/drool.gif http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clint.gif

Yeah but did it last / is it still running? They built a 600BHP escort cossie that was always broken, the guy spent £80k on it http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clint.gif

IMHO why bother with a 2.4 coversion when the standard 2 litres can give you a reliable 500 BHP, more than enough for a road car!

[/QUOTE]Wes beat me to it.

The 2.0 engines when the cars raced would run 750 during qualifying apparently, but would tear themselves apart after a lap, but then that's all they needed.

I have been in a couple and for what the conversion was marketed for (High Torque Road Engines) they are quite good, but I would never spend that sort of money when all thats needed is more boost lol.

I have the power Engineering Brochure from the early 90's Ill dig it out and scan it for ye all http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif

sounds like logic wes, just spend the money on 2litre then. you used the word reliable, is that the case? i dont doubt it or anything, you lot do know your 500bhp cossies after all http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif

The engine is relaible if built correctly, it's the rest of the car that breaks i.e. gearbox, diff(s), driveshatfts etc, this is what costs serious money to get right http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif

http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif hehe, i was lookin up prices for quaife boxes+diffs etc, and i think i'll buy a house instead lol.
how strong are T5 boxes though? i get the impression they are much stroger than a 4x4 box. I always read about busted 4x4 boxes/diffs etc. However, I suppose its down to the car having more traction though, cos if nothings spinning, then something else has to give. Is that right? if so, i'm learning. woohoo!! http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif

The T5 box is a lot stronger than the MT75 but another factor is that the MT is 4x4 and therefor the wheels are harder to spin than the 2wd cars.....this puts a lot more strain on the box and i would expect they would be a lot more reliable if they where 2wd format

wes
19-12-2002, 09:18
I wouldn't say the T5 is alot stronger than an MT75, it's just a 2wd can spin the wheels up to release the strain where a 4x4 soaks it all up & propells you down the road at warp factor 10 http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif but after a while it takes it's toll and tends to eat 3rd gear, or the rear diff, or the front drivers side driveshaft (the last one mainly when lowered too much or knackered engine mount).

Stevenoz

so basically wot i said then.
have you eaten any boxes wes? or is yours a super trick pukka quaife jobby? http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/drool.gif

DazC

Wes has a special gear set...but it aint a quaife http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/wink.gif

wes

Wish i had got the Quaife one, mine isn't very well, something made out of bronze has died inside it as i know have golden syrup coloured gearbox oil and it doesn't like going into gear and it learches forward when starting (in neutral) unless the clutch is being pressed  Out it comes and i guess another few months with no gearbox

So it wasnt quite worth the £2200 then? http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/sad.gif

are R+D going to sort it or is it going elsewhere ?

Clint
21-12-2002, 22:51
http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/sad.gif Jesus wes shit dont stop m8, hope they get it sorted soon http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/sad.gif

wes
22-12-2002, 12:13
I'm hoping it's nothing serious, i don't think a bronze item is going to do any damage to a hardened gear kit, well i hope not anyway! Box is coming out after xmas so i can take it to them at the begining of january, i'll be calling them tomorrow to confirm all this, should be under warranty, the gearbox hasn't done many miles (less than 1000) and has only been in the car since september.

Wes:
If it breaks this often regularly you should have repairs for free till the world ends.. Just a pity it takes so much time..
Hope you get some money so you can buy a quaife box.
