View Full Version : New Gearbox
My New Tremec gearbox arrived today now all I need to do is make a bellhousing http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif
This thing is big hope it handles the power http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif

How does one go about making a bell housing????? http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/banana.gif
How about some photies, Clint? http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/cool.gif
Ill take some pics tonight, Belhousing wise I have 4 options:
1, Make an adaptor plate to allow the std T5 belhousing to bolt to it. (This is cheap and easy but looses the hydraulic clutch mechanism on the box)
2, Make a new bellhousing by cutting and welding a T5 belhousing and the original belhousing thats on the box
3, Make a new belhousing machined from billit alloy (very expensive.
4, buy a sharp chisle and a big block of alloy
Ill look the job over tonight, I have allready noticed the spigot bearing is twice the diameter so I am going to have to machine the crank to take the OE one for the box.

Wouldn't it be easier to get the end of the input shaft machined down to take the standard spigot bearing? I suppose as the engine is apart being built you could do it either way?
I presume from your post that you are/have been a metal worker/precision engineer/machinist? http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif What car is the new box going on? http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/drool.gif
can you use the internal type release bearing a la mondeo type ??but i'm not to familiar with t5s so i could and most probably talking out my arse

It would indeed be easier but the question I asked myself is why its bigger ! I came to the conclusion that its stronger. My crank is still out so its just as easy for me eiter way.
Its a 3 Door Cossie and I work in the IT industry http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif

you probably could but the one in it was designed for a car with truck loads of power so again I would guess its stronger than the mondeo type (BTW I am using the mondeo one in my Anglia http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif )
Edited to add pics http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif
What's the spline on the input and do you have a yoke for the prop out the backend?
What clutch pressure plate or plates, and disc(s) you thinking of using?

Input is 26 theeth on a 24 pitch output is 30 on 24, Recoprop are doing the prop end (funny you calling it a yoke recoprop called it the sleeve and in the states its a spider )
I am using an AP 7.25" twin plate clutch (might chenge)
ooh that looks nice http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif
Not in my bloody hallway it doesnt http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/wall.gif

OK got down to doing some working out today, looks like the following needs addressing:
1) Input shaft spiggot is bigger and longer so have decided to shorten and while the box is apart grinding to the correct bore for the standard spiggot bearing.
2) New bellhousing will need fabricating.
3) New clutch plate will be required as the spline is rather large.
4) gearlever housing needs moving back so the gearstick comes up in the original hole.
5) Propshaft need shortening and end changing.
6) clutch pedal needs converting to hydraulic (seems easy after a conversation with Mr Hadland today)
So here are some more pics:

Oh there it is - no wonder its rated to such a high torque handling look at the size of the gears http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clint.gif

thats a very nice piece of kit you have there, would you mind disclosing the amount of pennies needed to aquire one of these
btw clint that quickshift looks like a diamond in a bucket full of shit on that gearbox
The Box cost £2200 and I recon it will be £800 to fit it.
However the are cheaper versions of the same box available but you end up with an unusable gear.

http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clint.gif Fugging hell, that's more than I've budgeted for my whole RST project http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clint.gif
Hope it doesn't go bang on the 1st run.
Its cheap if you compare it to one of the crap gear kits that are available, My box is the same spec as the box in the Aston Martin Vanquish so I guess it will handle my 4 pot's output http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif
I wont tell you about my new Diff then http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clint.gif

Theres more metal in a Ford gearbox than an entire Saxo http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Clint now it's fitted etc. Are the gear ratios useable? Is it worth it for the 6th gear?
Quarterless, this was 4 years ago.
So it probably isn't fitted yet. :D
