Does anyone have any info / pictures / pages from a ford manual on how this is supposed to go on? Is it really just a case of putting the horse-shoe plates either side of the turbo mounting, then the two inserts either side and then the big spring clip? am i missing something?

Admittadly it's a T34 turbo, but I hope that it helps!

I do indeed, but spec-r sell an adapter to use the rs500 turbo damper on the 4x4 cylinder head. I have decided to get rid of the bailey turbo damper as it doesn't actually dampen anything, it just holds the turbo in place.

Sapphy, ta very much, that shows pretty much how i thought it would go together, but is it really just held on the turbo with the big spring clip?

I know this Phil http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/wink.gif Have you got any pics of your one to share?

So it is just a friction fitting on the turbo bracket then? Just want to make sure, don't want to drive it and crack the cylinder head because i wasn't 100% sure about it http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif

The bailey one is http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/shit.gif for the exact reason you said. I have a brand new 500 damper sat in a box in my loft.

Clint

Interesting I have had several discussions about this and our conclusion were that with the 2wd manifold and tubular ones you didnt want to allow any damping to happen, what I mean is if you allow the manifold to vibrate at a different rate from the engine you have to be stressing the bolts its held on with.
But a solid fixing dosnt allow the manifold to expand so 2 rod ends we thought were the best compromise as they allow for movement but wont allow the manifold vibrate at a different frequency to the engine.

The other comment I would like to add is that I have seen 2 of the Spec R damper conversion brackets that have broken so if your going to do it get somthing a bit more substantial made up.

I personally am going to use a bailey type damper http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif unless of course you are saying you have had trouble with you manifold cracking or comming loose ?

Thats an engine fooker uperer when it snaps off or splits (shouldn't be long now, they all snap sooner of later!),

A friend RST went on fire recently after one of these snapped! http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clint.gif When did they start bolting them directly to the turbo, I know folk with pre-turbo filters that are remote and they never have any trouble! http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/confused.gif

RST have turbo dampers ???

Where ?

wes
13-05-2003, 10:35
I have had trouble with it in the past Clint, the top bolt that holds the rod end in came out due to vibration (i did loctite it in there too!), and also you get a nasty vibration at around 3000 RPM, which is very off putting.

For a tubular manifold this type of damper would be better, as when the manifold gets hot it will start to sag as it's turning into liquid metal http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clint.gif , but the cast iron 2wd item doesn't get this bad, but it does need to be supported and dampened due to it's size and weight. I've found cosworth to be quite good at designing things that work http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif I just hope the Spec-R bracket doesn't break, it's not like they are cheap http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clint.gif

erm, sorry, I was refering to the Bailey pre-turbo oil filter. they seem to have a thing for snapping and pouring oil over your turbo, hence fire! But like i said, the ones with the oil filter in a remote position instead of bolting it straight to the turbo seem to last. (only from seeing friends with them)

don't be tight but 2 lengths of braided and put the filter in the middle then its more like the origanal item

Clint

What original item ? these things are simply no use ! the fragments that are required to kill a turbo will have already of killed the engine as the oil comes from the main gallery and has already passed through a much better filter.

Its a scam every turbo you send back under warrenty will have suffered oil contamination, IMA just had this the pictures the Turbo company sent back were damming not damming evidence of oil contamination but damming on behalf of the turbo company as firstly it was lumps of swarf rather than particals and secondly they picked on the wrong bloke as Phil had someone strip his engine down and check for signs of contamination and of course there was none http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif

lol excellent http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clap.gif put them back in their place! Did Phil have to pay out to get the engine stripped by a third party?

to clear up for Cossiemetro, the 'original item' ie the oil feed pipe is definately required, just not the filter aspect of it http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif

Getting back to the Bailey Vs RS500 damper discussion.

I would be very interested to know exactly how much endurance, destructive and general testing has been done on cossie engines with a Bailey damper fitted, compared to ones fitted with the 500 damper by Ford.

Also knowing that the the 500 damper was successfully used in the touring cars as well.

I'd stick with the T&T'd one myself, especially after Wes's experience.

wes

This was the reason for this thread in the 1st place!

I think i have sussed it out now, i will post some pictures tonight on how it goes together when i fit it to my car as the spec-r adapter has now arrived http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif

http://media.turbosport.co.uk/2003/5/2003514105631622371.jpg

Basically you assemble it befor it goes on the car, if it is a genuine ford kit it will have a spare washer that goes in between the horse shoe parts (arrowed above), simultaing the gap that the turbo bracket would fill. My one didn't come with this, so i will use a big washer. You then slide it onto the turbo bracket, pushing the spare spacer out at the same time. That spring is very hard, but don't go mental with it as you can over stretch it, making it useless http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif

OK this is it assembled off the car, getting that spring on is very tricky and i nearly had my eye out a couple of times, use caution when fitting this bit http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clint.gif :

http://media.turbosport.co.uk/2003/5/2003514202348152309.jpg

And this is the spacer installed to aid fittment on the turbo. You know just slide it onto the turbo bracket, pushing this spacer out at the same time:

http://media.turbosport.co.uk/2003/5/20035142023487133.jpg

Some pics of it all installed, i couldn't take pics and fit it at the same time, it's abit too tricky to do by yourself, and it was raining:

Well, i am gobsmacked the difference fitting the proper RS500 damper has made, the vibration has simply gone, totally, i'm in shock and need to sit down! I just took it out for a blast (1st time since fitting it) and it has made the car nice again, almost feels standard when driving through town (ok, except for the loud exhaust, whining gearbox, hard suspension etc http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/jester.gif ) I nearly smiled! http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif

how much was the spec R bracket Wes?

LOTS of money for what it is! Costs £150 + VAT + delivery from Spec-R http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clint.gif I was originally going to make something similar, but i just wanted something that would fit and not have any hassle http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/grin.gif

correct! http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif bloody hard fitting that spring too init LOL http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/wink.gif yeah it should be a white plastic washer that fits between the two and then slides out when fitting to the turbo, and as you said in a later post, completely removes all vibration! http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif this kit IS the best, as said on here earlier, the Bailey kit doesnt dampen, it just holds.

I bought a genuine 500kit from GGR a while back, was only £99 inc VAT at the time though, have they gone up that much now?
