View Full Version : Fitting guides needed
Anyone got a Fuel computer fitting guide and what parts are needed to get it all working in a non fuel computed RST ?
Also my mate has an early S2 RST with electric mirrors, do you know if the wiring is already there and we just need the switch and mirrors and I guess a relay ?
Thanks once again http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif
I've found this so far
How to fit a fuel computer
Fuel Computers were an optional extra in most of the higher spec Fords, such as the Escort XR3i (mk4), Escort RS Turbo (series 2), and the Granada Scorpio. It is however possible to fit them into most models, and this is how it's done.
The first thing to do, is decide where you are going to mount the computer, this is easier on the Mk4 escorts, as it will fit on the right hand side of the dash, in the aperture occupied by the coin tray.
The chances are that if your Ford left the factory without a fuel computer, then non of the wiring required will be present, therefore when purchasing a fuel computer (they are readily available second hand), it is a good idea to try and obtain the multiplug that goes in the rear at the same time. On the back of the computer are 9 numbered pins, they should be connected as follows (if you have the multiplug, the wires coming from it should corresponde to those colours in brackets).
Pin 1 (red) - Connects to a permanent 12 volt supply
Pin 2 (Silver/Green) - Connects to a lighting circuit for night illumination (12volts with lights on)
Pin 3 (Brown/Red) - Connects to the Brown/Red wire from the secondary sender unit from the Petrol tank
Pin 4 - This is not connected
Pin 5 (Brown) - Earthed to the chassis
Pin 6 (Brown/White) - Connects to the Brown/White wire from the Speed Sensor (module fitted inline with the speedo cable at it's entry point into the gearbox) *
Pin 7 (Brown/Green) - Connects to the fuel flow sensor (one of the 3 pins on the sensor, on the left hand side of the fuel meter (MFi cars only)) **
Pin 8 (Brown) - Earthed to the chassis
Pin 9 (Black/Yellow) - Connects to 12 volt ignition live.

Do you need a whole new speedo cable or just the bit on the bottom ?

Dunno m8, but i've had a fuel computer sat in my glovebox for nearly 3 years now.
Just seems like a whole lot of hassle to "know" I am doing about 12mpg http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif
its an adaptor that screws into the gearbox and then the original speedo cable screws into it.

The hard bit to get hold of is the fuel flow sensor which is fitted to MFI cars and as the computer was only ever an option on these they are hard to get hold of (In the later EFI escort and orion cars in which the computer was standard the computer is wired direct to the ECU so a seperate fuel flow sensor wasn't needed)
Even without the speed and fuel flow sensors you can wire the rest up, it looks better than the coin tray!
