Can you bypass the Amal valve on the small turbo Escort Cossie so that it's the actuator controlling the boost on it's own?

If the boost is surging at the top end how do you tell if it's the amal valve or the actuator thats at fault? without taking either out, can you do this?

Hi Jason. http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif
Have you made sure your amal valve is working properly?

You can use the actuator on it's own but the amal valve allows better control of the waste gate actuation so it doesn't clatter about and shorten it's life. Also the valve allows the engine to cut the boost if it thinks theres a problem (I think). I would keep it in your setup if you can.

can't wait to see the car, next meeting perhaps?
Any joy with a house? Just made an offer on one this morning, http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/shocked.gif fingers crossed....

Cheers Ferg, get on msn at night more!

How do I check if the valve is working properly?

You aren't going to see my car at the meeting's mate, get your ass along to the shows and you'll see it there and I'll allow you a couple of photos of it http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Thought there would have been some more replies to this as my knowledge is entirely limited. http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/sad.gif

I beleive you can test an Amal valve by passing a current (not sure how big, pressuming 12V but could be 5V so don't just go out and try it before someone confirms this, Andy G should know you could try phoning him) across the blades of the plug, it should click once when the power is applied I think.

There is a whole lot to do with the 'jetting' of them too. IE how big a restrictor is in the outlet. (You should be able to see the restrictor in the outlet that goes to the actuator). I think they are all the same standard though so this shouldn't be a problem.

Have you got yourself a Workshop manual yet? http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/wink.gif

HTH Cheers

What boost are you running. I prefer to stick with the Amal valve as it adds some closed loop protection.
How is it surging? Boost up and down? At what revs?

the boost should be spiking at 18 and falling back to 14(got a GGR 305 conversion) but in 3rd,4th and 5th it seems to be spiking at 18 then falling back to 16 then spiking again, then repeating this sequence for as long as you hold your foot down.

Never really noticed what revs it was doing http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/blush.gif

Hmmm. OK try unplugging the power fromthe amal valve and see how the boost behave then.
It will obviously be lower.

Will try on sunday,

If the amal valve is knackered will it run smoother with it unplugged?, with lower boost?

As far as I'm aware it should run half of your full boost.

Fom what you say tho, it could be a boost cut in your chip. Don't know for sure tho.... http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/confused.gif

I have got the same problem with my 3dr cos,the boost surges up & down, did try unplugging the amal valve & yes boost dropped by half but it didn't surge at all, I found someone had removed the restrictors on the valve, yet to try a new valve, new -31 actuator made no difference.
