The temperature gauge should sit between the O and the R of NORM or about half way up the gauge, depending what clocks are fitted to your car (some have norm, some are blank) either way the fans should cut in long before the needle goes anywhere near the red, in my own 4x4 they cut in periodically about town or after a hard run without the needle showing much movement at all but that may be because my car has a low temperature thermostat. If i was you i'd check out why it's going so high before you do any lasting damage.....just my opinion http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif

I have an extra temp gauge in mine taken from the thermostat housing and that can read 100 degrees C with the dash temp gauge still showing normal!
In my opinion the standard gauge doesn't respond to temp changes very quickly, I would check your system out!

My fans kick in when the needle touches the N on the gauge.
