My gearbox has gone abolloc in my sereis 2 ERST, ive got a couple of gearboxs lying about an xr3i box outa a g reg, and a series 1 box without a LSD in.
Are the ratios the same on the series 1 and series 2 box? i dont think the xr3i one has the same ratios, but i wreckon the series 1 is the same!
so will a series 1 box work ok on a series 2 with the abs still connected? and is it easy to swap the LSD over?

Think series 1 is a tad shorter, more like the fiesta box ?

so it wont fit then? Il have to compare them tonight! i think the bell housing and mouldings might be different but i cant see why they should have different connections to the block!

I think the fly wheel is a different size on the series 1 but i cant see that making much differnce?

or does anyone know where i can get a recon box cheap, ive had quotes from £450 to £600... on the recon exchange they use my existing LSD, coz apparently there like rocking horse shit at the minute!

S1 box will fit in a S2 no worries. Just need to fit the mounting studs off the S2 box. A S2 diff won't fit in the S1 box as they have different amount of holes on the crown wheel. If you try to match different crown wheels to mainshafts they are noisey or don't mesh.

hmm...

problems then... looks like i might have to sacrifice my LSD then! or get a recon unit after all!

cheers for all the info guys!

you're right about the flywheel sizes.. generally people with S1's get a c2 (220mm i think as opposed to 200) flywheel and clutch when they get replaced as they hold the power better.

Cheers,

Mark.

It will be a bugger to drive without the LSD and don't even think about it in the wet.

Get a rebuild done or buy a 2nd hand box.

how can it be when its only the casing thats different lol

s1 box will go into a s2 with no mods or anything
just use the s2 gearbox carrier
lsd wont affect it as both driveshafts are the same

Well, you made up your mind , but just to clear some things:
S1 box fits S2.

S2 box doesn't fit S1 without modifications.

The final drive of S1, S2 and XR3i are all different,
therefore the crown wheel and layshaft should always be kept as a pair. See the ratios:
http://www.kolumbus.fi/ilpok/escort3_4.htm

S2 differential attaches to the crown wheel with 8 bolts, others with 6 bolts.

6 bolt crown wheel can be redrilled and tapped to 8 bolt pattern, but is a pain in the arse, and should not be done DIY style.

On the 200 and 220 clutches, the flywheel, clutch and thrust bearing are different and should no tbe mixed.

S2 box fits the S1, if the left hand side casing, and clutch lever arm is changed.

Mk4 Escorts have longer (~2 cm longer) clutch lever arms than the mk3. Mk4 box can take both lever arm lengths, but the mk3 box must use the shorter.

I have lots of pictures of the differences and hydrid gearboxes is someone needs some specific information.
