View Full Version : Anymore non Ford old schoolers ?
Hi Guys,
I've been lurking on this board for about 1 1/2 years now. I joined when I was searching out a MK1 escort but found a 1st gen Mazda RX7 instead as they are much cheaper to buy in good condition. Anyway enough about me and onto my car.

So what have the rest of you lot got ? there must be some non Ford old schoolers lurking about in the background like I was http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/tongue.gif
Nice car Mike, I like it.
What's the story with rotor tip wear, and fuel consumption, the 2 things that always made me step back from an RX7?
Mpg is low ... around 20-max30mpg could be higher if I sorted a performance exhaust out.
Rotor tip wear isn't really a problem anymore ... I think most of the reputation is due to people abusing the cars thinking they can rev the living daylights out of the cars without regular servicing or warm up or cool down. The Ro80's used to have bad tip wear
Having said that mines survived 5 owners 19 years and 66'000miles on one engine and she's still going strong.
They aren't as indistructable as some piston engines but they certainly aren't as bad as most people think.
I'm a rotor convert now ... even thinking about sticking one in my kit car now
technicly im not a ford old skooler my car is a escort RS 200 BUT the3 body is made by triumph and the engine is more mustang

I thought that reliant made the RS200 body
Well, it does have a Ford motor in it, even if its a lot bigger than Ford ever did them:

Gravel rally is loads of fun, if you can't flog a car down a gravel road at 100, why have it?
Clean first gen RX7! still very popular up here in the NW of USA cause they don't rust here. You need a LSD for it or a whole disc braked/LSD axle assembly? I know one sitting and destined to die in the crusher.
I drive around in an 16 year old mk2 Golf GTI, its not a Ford and it is getting a bit long in the tooth these days.
IF ONLY EVERYTHING IN LIFE WAS AS RELIABLE AS A VOLKSWAGON ( Yeah nothing would work http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/tongue.gif)

Thanks, I'd be interested in just the Diff as UK cars came with the Disc brakes and larger axle as std. but didn't get a LSD However I think shipping it would make it too expensive ... thanks for the offer though http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/clap.gif
Nice ... is it a Saab 96 ? I thought they had a 3 cylinder 2 stroke engine ? or am I getting my wires crossed
Well from 1967-1980 Saab bought the Köln built 1.5 liter V4, and for USA for 71-73 the 1700 V4, a direct cousin of the Taunus 2600 V6, a 1st cousin of the 2800 V6, and a thirs cousin of the 2.9 V6
For rally use Saab homologated the 1700 motor and for nation class stuff people would routinely bore the things from 90mm std bore to the 2800s 93mm bore and make it 1815cc.
I build motors and this one is a bored and stroked motor with 94mm bore, 70.9mm stroke (up from 90 x 66.8 for 1700) for 1965cc. Saab produced dual exhaust port heads and a cross ram manifold for 2 x 45 DCOE Webers.
Here's a second photo from a few years ago at a US National Championship Rally, we had a good weekend in terms of results wionning the class for 2wd cars under 2.4l which we call Group 2.
Hey the cost of getting the thing to the UK may not be tooo much if I carry the thing when I come shortly....

Saab did have their own 750 and later 850cc three cylinder 2 stroke but they took pity on the rest of the rally world and went to the V4 to give Ford a fighting chance.
Hell thats 1 clean looking RX7 !

one of my Lancer ex2000 turbo's...fairly stock with a slight power hike to 195bhp (standard 170)
the other one ...road legal trackday car with tuning bits has approx 300bhp
These were the fastest 4-door saloon cars in the world 1981
...best bit is the way they go sideways ! http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Jaguar Sovereign 4.2 Auto (Series 3 XJ6) 1985 C plate. it has undergone extensive restoration since i've owned it in the last 7 years such as most panels replaced, resprayed, engine rebuilt, new autobox, suspension, subframe, alloys restored, blah de blah. and at long last it goes fast! felt sluggish for quite a long time.
Jag http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/drool.gif http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/drool.gif http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/drool.gif http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/drool.gif http://www.turbosport.co.uk/images/smilies/drool.gif,ultimate class

i used to be in the jaguar enthusiasts club, but i didnt renew my membership as the magazine is not as good as it used to be. and the tech help etc didnt seem very good (and its about £30 to £35 a year).
you could join the forum www.jag-lovers.org (http://www.jag-lovers.org) but its mainly US members and i dont like the way the forum is set up, its very difficult to find threads on specific bits of the car. and they are too jag purist on there and dont like the mention of modifications or ICE installs.
i set up a 100% free forum www.jaguarownersclub.co.uk (http://www.jaguarownersclub.co.uk) which i'm trying to get off the ground so feel free to join!
