Hello All,
I have been offered an Escort MK1 to repair. I was wondering about installing the 4x4 running gear from a Sierra XR4x4 and then installing a Cosworth Turbo engine.
Could anyone share any thoughts/ideas regarding this conversion and if any of you have done it or know of anybody who has then please let me know. That should make it a bit easier for me.
I look forward to your replies.
Thank you in advance.
Jonathan

This car was the result of the mating of a Sierra 4x4 floorpan and a MK1 top. You can make out the Sierra strut tops in the engine bay.
Very nice car but an enormous amount of work, the only way to do it really.
I have no other information on this car, it was the subject of a thread on here ages ago, I think someone posted a magazine article.

the biggest problem you got is the width of the 2 cars is quite different, the sierra obviously is wider. this means that you won't get the engine and front suspension cross member under the escort without chopping out the chassis rails.don't know about the top mounts, but maybe if you use a std x/member and escort top mounting points you'll have massive negative camber
you'll then need a fucking big transmission tunnel to get the mt75 and transfer box into.
at the rear you can put a sierra beam on the back cos i've done it. you'll need to cut off the front spring hangers and fabricate new brackets to mount the beam by it's original donuts and you'll need bloody wide arches. and make something for dampers, a cross member where the boot floor used to be for the diff mounting etc etc.
not impossibe if you've got the skill and the time, but who wants 4x4 anyway? i've got a 2wd cossie and a 4x4 v6 and the 4x4 is just boring - you want rwd and big power to have plenty tailsliding action. that way you don't see the tree coming cos you hit it backwards.

If I was sticking to rear wheel drive, do I use a Capri 2.8 axle and front struts, or is there any other preffered way?
Also does anybody know if the XR4x4 running gear is the same as the 4x4 Cosworths?
Thanks again

Would you be able to scan in the article and send it to me?
What magazine and issue was it in, as I may still be able to get a back issue?
Thanks again

mogsmexico,
Is that the RS Owners Club? and was "gof" the user name?
RSOC is the RS Owners Club, yes.
'GOF' were the starting 3 letters of the numberplate. There was an article of it in Fast Cars (when it was good). I've got some scans from it if anyone is desperate.
Cheers, Greg.
