I have the Sierra calipers on the rear of my Rs2000 Mk2, I need to get a handbrake cable for them, there are two lengths of cable, one for none ABS and the other for ABS, which do most people use? the ABS one is longer, but i dont want it flapping around under the car picking up road kills

I tried a mk5 escort one and didn't like it, to much cable flapping about.
In the end i used a sierra 4 x 4 cosworth one on mine, it was about £20 from my local motorfactors.

I will post a photo later

Photo,s :-

Two of the photo's show the a piece of metal twisted through 90 degrees which you will need to make this is to join the sierra cable to the escort handbrake mechanism.

Thank you for that, nice clear pics,
where can I buy the cable support brackets that you have bolted to the tunnel?

Slymanrs2,

You only need 1 more bracket, you can either bolt it on or weld it on.
I bought mine from Gartrac, it was about £7.00 + p and p

you can see a photo of it on there website

www.gartrac.com (http://www.gartrac.com)

Parts i used all together were :-

Weld on axle brackets (Gartrac) £18.00 for 2
Handbrake cable bracket (Gartrac) £7.00 approx
Mk3 escort solid discs local motor factors £10 each
Sierra Cosworth 4 x4 handbrake cable local motor factors approx £20
8 longer wheel studs (Burton Power) £2.00 each approx

Important.

Note the position of the caliper in the photo below !
If the weld on brackets are incorectly positioned (to low) the caliper might touch the leaf springs when the pads wear (to high) and the caliper can hit the chassis on full spring compression.
I advise a dry build before welding to check clearance.
I have one inch lowering blocks fitted on my car this actually gives you more clearance (caliper to leaf spring) if i removed them i might have clearance problems myself.

I need to use the Pugeot discs, and axle tube weld on brackets, cos i will be using 13" wheels on a five Gartrac linked Atlas

Slymanrs2,

My car has 6 x 13 inch RS2000 alloy wheels with my set up loads of clearance !
If you use the peogeot discs you wont be able to fit 6 x 13 inch RS wheels mate im 100 % sure about that.

Does anybody know by any chance what diameter the mk3 discs are?

Cheers

APEC code, as used by most motorfactors.

...........................DSK 123...........................DSK 110
dia..................... 139.5mm............................139.5mm
thickness.............10.0mm..............................10.0mm
height..................58.1mm...............................43.0mm
center hole...........63.6mm...............................63.6mm

DSK 110 is used on bolt on brackets, not suitable for 13" alloys
DSK 123 is used on weld on brackets and is suitable for 13" alloys

Thanx mate

oh, someone told me thats what they was? will sort them out, slap!
So you can either use weld on brakets or bolt on types for Atlas? With Grp 1 shafts, in Baby casing.

Retromotorsport,

What does the diameter of 139.5 relate to ?

Is that the inside diameter of the disc where the halfshaft fits ?

Mk3 escort solids are around 228mm or 239mm or 248mm diameter, i can't remember the exact diameter !

Oppps 239.5 mm

Would this be the one?

Is this the biggest/best disc to use to fit with cossie-2wd rear calipers? Would this be sufficient on a
cossied escort?
I'm seriously considering this set-up. (Mainly because it's alot cheaper than I expected )

Cheers

One thing you all have to remember is the rear brakes are linked to the front brakes and the grip of the front tyres, its is not uncommon for the rear axle to have no effective weight on it, there fore braking on the rear is less that 10% of overall braking.

An escort with 60/40 weight distrubution would need the brakes to work on the same 60/40 split untill you put weight transfer into the equation. With the leverage of modern big disc conversions and the co-efficent of friction afforded by modern tyres, means the rears have less to do. Small discs at the rear are quite adequate. Unless you have a Porsche, then you need a 70/30 split with a weight split of 40/60.

Yes I know small discs look silly behind bling bling big wheels .. but what do you want.. brakes or looks

Best thread ever. Part numbers and dimensions - brilliant.
