View Full Version : Help - Zetec beginners question
I've seen a Mk II RS2000 for sale with a Zetec engine. It's in a hillclimb/race sort of car.
I know nothing about these engines. Unless I can get the thing out for a test drive it could be a standard unit. What should I look for - how can I tell whether the engine's been worked on? Is there any way from the outside of determining whether it's a 1400 or 1800 or 2000 (or whatever size these engines came in??)
Are these engines any good for competiton? And what sort of gearboxes go on the RWD versions?
Sensible answers pls.
Thanks
I think you'll normally find a type 9 on the RWD zetec conversions.. as for competition i'd imagine they're pretty good, but it would depend on what class you're racing in!
No idea how you can tell what size it is from the outside i'm afraid.. is it on carbs? turbo?
AFAIK a standard 2.0 on carbs will give about 170bhp which should be reasonably quick in a striopped out escort i'd have thought!

i saw pics of a 2.0 zetec engine in bits on here and it had 2.0 stamped on the block in fairly big letters
EDIT I JUST FOUND THE PIC!

There is a guide to engine numbers on my website:
www.zetecescorts.bravehost.com (http://www.zetecescorts.bravehost.com)
It will have a stamp on giving the capacity though, but not the power out put (as standard).
Thanks for the replies guys.
Went to have a closer look at the car yesterday. Spec. appear quite interesting. Atlas axle - but not linked, quaife box, FWD RS2000 Zetec said to be 180 bhp. Car is a bit of a shed inside, stripped out and tatty, lines everywhere. MK II RS big arched droop snoot shell running 15" rims ( they look like 10" on the rear!). Quite tatty but no sign of rust. Ex-hillclimb car, but road registered.
Bit of a mixture really......
i don't think the rs2000 engine is a zetec as such... believe it's called the I4 or IB4 engine (can't remember)
Apparently a bit of a nightmare to fit... speak to Danielson or retromotorsport on here for more info as Gary fittied one in Dan's car. would like to see some pics.. sounds like an interesting car.

RS2000 engine is the I4, not ZETEC. Ford got 250 bhp out of them for their competition cars, but they are expensive to tune and heavy.
