2.8 mfi to efi worth doing?
am thinking about convering my mfi 2.8 tt capri to efi (ford efi not megasquirt)
would it provide any power and economy benefits as currently my mfi system pours petrol through all the time in order to meet the fuel needs when it comes on boost and can only supply enough fuel up to 5500rpm.
Re: 2.8 mfi to efi worth doing?
My Xr4i was about 10% down on power but 20% up on torque with the Mfi replaced with Efi, it was also slightly better on fuel than all my previous ones, that may have been down to the increased torque allowing me to stay in higher gears longer though.
If your going to bother mucking about with all the bits needed these days though i'd just chuck a 2.9 in instead, its a better engine and mucho easier to find all the Efi bits than for the 2.8, which only came on the late 2.8 grannies
Re: 2.8 mfi to efi worth doing?
With turbocharging you really should go programmable EFI if you want to make the swap. That will open up a whole new world for you, trust me.
I have been involved in running turbo 2.8's with both MFI, Ford EFI and then Megasquirt. The difference is huge.

Re: 2.8 mfi to efi worth doing?
EFI it and add a megasquirt using wasted spark. Will work a treat and get the most out of your engine.
Re: 2.8 mfi to efi worth doing?
i expect that will be my eventual route.
what money am i looking at for megasquirt though
The engine is producing 212bhp and 270ftlbs torque so am not too bothered about getting any more power/torque but it just drinks fuel at an incredible rate. I know i sholdnt have bothered having the engine built for it if i was expecting to get an economical car but its heading to the point where every time i take it out i think of the cost.
Re: 2.8 mfi to efi worth doing?
Depends on the version of megasquirt. But, approx £200.
Re: 2.8 mfi to efi worth doing?
The thing with Megasquirt and programmable ignition is that you really can make an ignition map that suits the engine both off and on boost. The lower cr most turbo engines have means they often benefit from a lot more advance off boost than a n/a engine.
At least that's my experience. The 2.8 twin turbo we used to run, with US 8.2:1 cr pistons, was really flat off boost with the standard EEC-IV ignition curve. Once on MS, we ran up to 45 degrees of advance in some points off boost. This made the engine a lot more responsive and it also cut fuel consumption.
So I think that if it's more economy and drivability you want, I'd say that's an even stronger reason to go MS.
You could do it in steps though, if you fit the EEC-IV and hardware first, it's easy to swap to MS at a later stage.

Dear Gustaf!
I'm from Argentina (Buenos Aires) and have built a Ford Sierra Xr4 with the 2,8 V6 (Granada MKIII), because I'm a Ford FANATIC!
I also LOVE all your STUFF!! (COSSIES, V6's 24V, RS, ST!!)
They only came nine Ford Sierra XR4i to Argentina on 1984. So in 2005 I purchased the V6 in original shape and modified pistons gearshaft, oil pump, stainless steel valves, etc.
Then I imported the EFI plenum from a Granada Scorpio from your country , installed 6 Ford Motorsport injectors (30 LBS at 39 PSI), set a pair of VNT turbo's GT2252 , Intercooler , a Ford T45 tranny, and a programmable TEC GT Ecu!!
This Injection could be used in full sequential mode.
(crank wheel and cam trigger)
Up to now I continue trying to get the timing setup, because I've 7,25:1 compression relation and the engine needs much timing advance!
I couldn't trace a good timing map, and I readed you add as much as 45 degrees in some points of the map curve...
I knew MINKER 2,9 TT V6 iddles at 900 RPM with 31 degrees, but 45 in some point is an interesting number!
So I maybe will try to rise timing Gustaf!
Very thanks for your excellent comments!!
I wish I would have a part of your knowledge, so I could do fantastic things on my engine!!
Sincerely,
Hernán Munoz Moser

2.8i on MFI, also have a turbo technics 2.8 kit but will not fit this straight away, thinking off purchasing a EFI inlet, ecu, MAF etc and get that running right first, any pitfalls i should watch out or on route?
Will upgrade to a programable ECU later, how easy will it be to fit a trigger wheel and crank sensor??
Thanks in advance
Neil
Re: 2.8 mfi to efi worth doing?
Dear Neil,
if you install the EFI inlet (Granada Scorpio 2,8i), you will need a programmable ECU that manages sequential injection firing order or you can use a Megasquirt with batch injection.
To adapt a 60 teeth trigger wheel at the crank, it´s not difficult!
But running batch injection, you can also use your original distributor and put a 120 teeth trigger wheel! (I meant 120 teeth, because camshaft spins half than crankshaft)
If you want full sequential, then you must install a one notch or teeth on your distributor and a 60 teeth trigger wheel on the crankshaft.
You should use crank and cam signal when you decide to run full sequential injection!
Otherwise its not neccesary!
Resuming, you have 3 configurations:
1-crank wheel only, 60 teeth. (BATCH INJECTION)
2-cam wheel only, 120 teeth. (BATCH INJECTION)
3-crank wheel 60 teeth and cam notch or teeth (one). (FULL SEQUENTIAL)
Please check at www.distributorless.com (electromotive ECU)

Re: 2.8 mfi to efi worth doing?
You can also trigger from a 2.8 EFI dizzy, and not run a trigger wheel on the crank at all, if you want to. That's the easiest way and the dizzy works fine.
Fitting the trigger wheel and crank sensor is not very hard. On our 2.8 we used a I4 DOHC trigger wheel on the front crank pulley, it was quite straightforward. That works fine with Megasquirt.

Hi Hernan and Gustaf,
Thanks for imparting your knowledge guys...:thumb:
Started to collect the bits needed........
Cheers Neil
