quick question regarding kent retainers and RK8 cotters
Hi Folks,
Quick yes or no question for anyone experienced working with Pinto's :
Ive been on to Paul Ivey regarding valves and he is not 100% sure that the Single groove RK8 cotters will mate perfectly with the Kent retainers supplied in an RL31 cam kit - can anyone confirm ??
cheers!
Re: quick question regarding kent retainers and RK8 cotters
The RL31 kit i bought did not include any retainers, just studs, rockers and springs.
I did however buy alloy increased springheight retainers instead of machining the spring pockets.
/T
Re: quick question regarding kent retainers and RK8 cotters
hmm i bought the kit second hand with little use. perhaps theyre standard retainers.
Still looking to find out if RK8 cotters are a direct replacement on the outside taper for Ford items if anyone knows! cheers

i couldnt find the answer either. and decided best course of action was simply buy the matching items from paul ivey

Thanks Graham, you didn't think to compare what you bought to the ford ones by any chance?
Although any minute difference not detectable by eye could be catastrophic...

However, now we need a ford version to compare ☺️

nope and with an engine was about to be revved to the moon and back, well in the event it was only 8700rpm which isnt bad by pinto standards eye and educated guessing wasnt on my list of things to do
Re: quick question regarding kent retainers and RK8 cotters
I had a chat with Andrew at GS Valves last year (actually almost exactly a year ago) since I had some damaged cotters in my Pinto with a set of REC valves.
What he said was;
"we had to change the collets from 5/16” imperial to 8mm metric, this was 2011. I have attached the drawings of the retainers, to try and identify which collets, as I only have the new 8mm design in stock, we also had to change the groove on the valve Diameter was 0.250”/0.248” now 0.245”/0.243”"
"10302 Retainer using 5/16” Collets, no longer avaiable
10303 Retainer using 8mm (RK8) Collets, @£1.50 each"
So as I understand it, the newer retainers use the RK8 cotters. The sketches I got of those retainers (for the RK8) show a 7 degree taper, the old ones a 7,75 degree taper.

Thanks Gustaf, that was the exact answer i was after, really appreciate it.
I think its definitely safer to cough up the extra 100 quid or so for the REC retainers in this case as id never be able to effectively measure the taper of what i have.
As always, thanks TS members! :thumb:
Re: quick question regarding kent retainers and RK8 cotters
I had a head K Lined and new single cotter valves fitted by Paul Gardner and the valve spring retainers looked like std Henry Ford to me.
The head will possibly be coming off soon to be changed for a different specification and cam so I'll have to wait until then to have a look, not a lot of help to you now.

Cheers! My gut feeling is they will be fine too, but I'm not taking the chance of dropping a valve on a 4k+ engine build

Gardner wouldn't have used them if they weren't the correct ones.

That's what they did look like alladdin, although I never took a measurement. I can understand over head valves concern.
