Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Anyway, back to more important things.
The Geartronics gear display has turned up, albeit with a rather short harness, probably intended for RWD boxes, not FWD.
http://img113.yfrog.com/img113/3610/3jjc.jpg
Needs a +12V supply, and the pot fixes on the box, and feeds the gear position back to the display unit.
The wiper motor intermittent relay also turned up from VWP, and has a rather odd wiring schematic, so I'm going to have to try to fathom out how to connect it in.
Does a intermittent relay normally double up as a standard relay, or do I need two relays?
ie one to signal for a continous wipe, and the other to switch the wipers on/off every 5s. I know the wiper motor needs a permanent +12V so it returns the wiper to the parking position, and thats fed to the motor through a fuse. The 'signal' wire to the motor then triggers it to wipe, and the permanent feed ensures that the wiper runs and returns to the park position.

All week off for me, so getting things done is a priority.
The control box (above) will be finished today (Tues)
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
hope you don't forget what it all means after 6 months, lots of orange in there!
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Red, poxy phone camera makes it look orange under flourescent light.
All the crimps have heatshrink with identification marks.
And I have a wiring diagram too. 8-)
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
I knew I shouldn't have doubted you
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Great progress, liking the heatshrink identification.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
If you write on the heatshrink before shrinking it, even my handwriting becomes 'neat' 8-)
Will finish it off today, if I can stay warm in the garage.
Just the wiper motor relay and one more switch left, then I'll need to get some fuses plugged in. Then I'll tie wrap everything to keep it looking neat.
Next stage is to add the 12/19 ITT Cannon connector on to the loom, to feed all the control box circuits, and to connect the power from the isolator switch in to the loom itself.
Then I'll run the extra +ve and 0V wires around the loom to the dash etc, and I can finally crimp all the S80 pins on and thats it!

You know what I never even throught of that idea!
Ive seen the heatshrink label printers and the pre made heatshrink letters/idents, but just writing on the heatshrink before you shrink it! Simple obveous ideas are always the best! :thumb:
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Use a fine tip permanent marker pen and it never rubs off either.

Im glad i have never got into electronics as mad as this, theres enough mindfucks with building the rest of a car let alone this box of electrical mess too :D
Fantastic work  is the rear beam back yet?

Based on a std rear axle. Focus rear hubs replace the standard stub axles, and I've gone for HiSpec rear calipers, and focus disks skimmed to 6mm and cross drilled + lightened.
The trailing arms and panhard rod are from www.kustomengineering.com
Rutland Performance Vehicles produced the axle for me. And they had it powder coated, and anodised the caliper brackets too. The rear hubs are shimmed to give -1.5 degrees camber.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Very neat, like how you have positioned the rear caliper.
What weight did you get the discs down to?
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
The disks have had 1kg of weight removed from a standard pair.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Thats a good saving
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Top work as usual Graham:thumb: You have the patience of a saint to do the wiring mate:clap:

you can do that when you make my loom ;)
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
p.s. graham, loom and rear discs look sweet
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
nice work on the rear beam,
hopefully nothing will flex, the reason 99% of brake calipers are mounted at 3 and 9 oclock is that those points minimise pad knock off due to things flexing, mounting at 6 or 12 oclock will have the opposite effect
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Never experenced pad knock off. These pads are located by pins, would they be susceptible?
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
what happens is the hubs/spindles etc etc bend under hard cornering which pushes the caliper piston back, if everything is rigid enough you wont experience any issues, if its not then your notice a longer brake pedal after a hard corner
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Does anyone know the brake pad type I need for the HiSpec 76 x 65 x14mm brake pads?
The nearest equiv I can find in the Demon Tweeks catalogue is for the one on page 329, Mitsubishi EVO-VIII rear also Lotus Elise Front, at 76.7mm x 65.2mm x 15mm.
Most of the calipers in the HiSpec catalogue just shows 76 x 65 x 14mm.
I'm after Ferodo DS2500's for the HiSpec rears.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Bugger! I emailed Quaife asking if they could invoice me for the sequential box, so I could avoid the VAT rate rise in 2010.
"Many thanks for your email. We are still having problems in getting this product into production at the moment due to the high increase in other products we manufacture and unfortunately the Fiesta sequential has been put back more and more.
If you could come and see us at the Autsport Show on our stand E133, we can discuss our plans then."
Does anyone have Tractive's contact details? I've emailed the contact on their website (June 2009) but never rxd a reply.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Chatting to Elite Racing Tranmissions about their sequential offerings, and Sadev has said "no can do" regarding discount, other than offering to pay P&P.
May well stick with the IB5, and rebuild with Quaife internals, then progress to sequential when it eventually sees the light of day. Keep thinking I should change for another manufacturer, but would most likely make the Tony Law system scrap, and other stuff I've done to accomodate the IB5.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Was that Steve at SADEV that you spoke too Graham ?

Maybe, swr motorsport or something like that.
Trade price would've been nice. Says margins are too small. My heart bleeds....
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
I'll take whatever discount I can, of course, but just discounting the P&P is a bit of a piss take.
Hell, if you dont ask....
Fitted the carbon battery box to the floor last night, and soldered the terminals on to the ends of the battery cable, and the -ve terminal is now connected to the foot of the roll cage (as before).
Will work on the isolator and +ve connections tonight.
The web camera is back on-line now. Still flashes all the time, because of all the bot attacks, but its working.
http://84.92.60.72/jpg/image.jpg
The radiator is now fitted, as is the grill and front panel modification. I will also wire up the twin Spal radiator fans over the hols.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Spotted an error with the wiring of the intermittent wiper relay, so I've rewired the box, and it all tests out OK now.
Schematic can be downloaded here.

Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Added umpteen wires to the cable loom today, power for the Lambda sensor, the DL1 datalogger, and control wires from the ECU to the control box, for the Radiator Fan relay, and fuel pump relay.
The lid on the isolator is now fitted using M3 allen bolts, and I've run a pair of wires from the control box to the isolator, so that when the isolator is opened (ie battery kill is pulled) the power to the ignition loom is also disrupted, to prevent the engine from running on.
http://img159.yfrog.com/img159/3310/967s.jpg
Also fitted the control box to the car re-using the same quick release latches I used on the previous box.
http://img238.yfrog.com/img238/7081/d3m.jpg
Still no sign of a contract, so I'll be in the garage again Weds.
And still no sign of the Innovate LC-1 from Burtons. I think its gone walkies.
I wired up the DL1 with the Dash 3 display today. I'm not going to use if for revs, etc, it'll just be used for the speed/time display.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Burtons confirmed that the Lambda will be with me tomorrow (Friday)
Yesterday lunch time, I ripped out the old wiring for the fuel pump and rear lights/brake lights, and I've added new wires (fewer than before) and also the two shielded twisted pair cables for the rear wheel speed sensors. These both run to the ECU.
When I wired the rear lights in in 2002, I included cables for indicators etc, so these are now removed.
It was -5 outside last night, so I didn't manage any more progress, but I did finish off some more of the crimbo cake. 8-)
This wiring is now seriously doing my head in, and I hope that it doesn't go one for much longer, as I'm questioning my own sanity as to why I took a working car apart. 8-|
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
well I had planned to wire my car myself until I saw how difficult it was on your thread.....
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
A little Insanity helps...
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
You're doing some great work there mate, I love the attention to detail :thumb:
Wiring can be a pain in the arse but don't give up, you're almost there...
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Graham, just a thought mate but if you wanted to do track days wouldn't it be a good idea to keep the indicators? Wouldn't like to see you make the car so specialized that you couldn't use it for more than a few minutes at a time and enjoy all your hard work out on track:thumb::clap:
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Do you need indicators on track days? I've never had to prove that they worked in the past...
The Innovate LC1 turned up today, from Graham Goodes in Leicester of all places.
Just reading the installation notes, looks very straight forwards.
Slight change of plan with the oil temperature sender. I was going to have the DL1 datalogger record the temp, but the S80 does it, so the cable now terminates at the ECU 8-) and I'll have the DL1 read the temp from the S80 via canbus.
http://img50.yfrog.com/img50/846/s2up.jpg
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
just read the thread from start to finish..................blown away . I thought I was"handy", but fcuk me , I feel pretty useless now! Amazing detail Graham , its gonna be some giant killer!
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Thanks, and I hope it is too..... 8-)
Sleeved the wires to the dashboard using the Nomex last night, and added couple of spare wires to the dashboard loom, just in case I add something in the future that needs them. The end of the loom will have a ITT Cannon connector, so it can be unscrewed and disconnected from the dashboard. I'll get the bits ordered today from www.rswww.com
I'll try to get some more Nomex from work today. I need some of the really small diameter sleeving, for the wires that supply the DL1 and wiper motor, to keep everything looking standard. About 6M should do 8-)
At the Autosport show on Thursday, I'll be on the lookout for a dashboard binnacle. I've only a few instruments, but the binnacle needs to look right.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
OK, so I will be at the show on Thursday, will keep a look out for a bloke fondling wiring loom components...
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
8-)
I'll be the saddo taking pictures of engine bays and dashboards, with the carrier bag full of brochures and stickers. Nothing ever changes.

Pretty sure that's actually me? lol
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
I think that description matches 99% of the audience.
Labelled up all the wires on the loom last night, ready for crimping. ITT Cannon connectors should be with me today so I can make the dashboard detachable via a quick release connector. 15 wires in total just to the dash. These are for the Rev counter, Shift LED, Oil Pressure gauge, Water Temp gauge, +12V, 0V, +5V, Traction on/off, Traction map wet/dry, Launch on/off, Launch map wet/dry, Traction aggressiveness, Low oil pressure warning, and Alternator Charge light.
The Geartronics display also takes its +12V feed from the supply to the dashboard, so I dont need to run any extra wiring for that. I'll wire it all in, even though I've not got the sequential as yet.
I'm going to stick with Stack analoge (stepper motor) instruments. I've tried the Dash3 from Racetechnology, but it doesn't look that great TBH, and that'll just be used to show the data from the ECU (warnings) for warnings, and for showing laptimes. It has a feature whereby you can show your previous laptime on the display, and it shows if you've gone slower or quicker on the current lap, based on the GPS coordinates and relative time/position. So a bit like the ghost in Mario Kart. Great for sprinting, as you get a indication if you're going to beat your previous lap whilst you're 'on it'. Theory sounds great.
Scrounged some more small diameter Nomex sleeving from the shop floor today, so I can keep the wires for the wiper motor seperate to the main loom to keep them isolated incase of interference. And I've ordered another 30M reel of 16A cable from VWP, and an AMP Superseal water proof connector for the radiator cooling fan connector.
Its time to start thinking about getting driveshafts made. I'll be talking to manufacturers at the Autosport Internation show on Thursday. See if I can wangle some good discount.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Got the small 19way ITT Cannon Neptunes through this afternoon. Stupidly I orderd the tin plated contacts, instead of the gold ones, so I've just orderd the the right ones, should be with me tomorrow.
http://img390.yfrog.com/img390/2312/g0d.jpg
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Made the connector for the dashboard last night. This is on the same loom as the ECU/Engine bay connections.
18 crimps crimped in place
http://img154.yfrog.com/img154/3997/49rv.jpg
With all the pins pushed in to the connector body
http://img111.yfrog.com/img111/8051/uz9.jpg
So now I can start work on the dashboard design.
At the Autosport show today I tried to find a dashboard binnacle, but no one makes one, so I'll have a go myself.
Met Mike Quaife too. He had some good news.....

Wow those cannon connectors look amazing, do you have a link as to which ones you bought? just looked on the website and there is a million different types lol
