Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Ran out of crimps so I couldn't finish the wiring on Friday evening. So I've set about mounting the carbon dash in the car, and made one support strut last night out of steel tubing, which supports the front of the dashboard (which is now pretty heavy with all the instruments inside). Slow progress, but progress all the same. Got a bollocking for going outside on Valentines day, but I'm sure the Fiesta didn't mind the attention. 8-)
The www.zetecinside.com website has had a makeover during the weekend. It now uses CSS for positioning, which makes it far easier to modify in the future, as one style sheet controls the layout. Just over half of the archive news pages are converted, with another 70 or so pages left to convert. I've removed the google ads, as they slowed everything down. So if anyone wants to place an advert on the site, get in touch....
If the website looks a bit doolally, press ctrl-F5 to force your web browser to reload all the styles etc.

Just a shame it's not called duratecinside...
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
I know. Tough call. Everyone knows the car as "Graham's zetecinside Fiesta", so I think I'll stick with the name.
I do also own the www.duratecinside.com domain name though, so maybe one day.....
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
seeing as ford put duratec badges on a zetec your just have to put zetec badges on a duratec !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now there's an idea 8-)
My suspension is on its way from the USA. Its been designed and manufactured by a bloke called Karl Hacken, and he works as a chassis/suspension designer for a race team.

http://img129.yfrog.com/img129/7389/3ttg.jpg
I've been waiting a year for the setup, as karl also sells road versions, and this is the first competition spec version that doesn't use the original bottom ball joint.
As soon as it arrives I'll fit it, measure the length of the new driveshaft, and get that ordered.
The dashboard is now mounted in the car, and I'm working on the brackets and stays' to make sure that they're up to the same standard as the rest of the car. I know you cant see the bracket that supports the rear of the dash, but its still the principle 8-)

Ahh the price of fame and notoriety, it's a terrible thing when you become a branded item
Maybe we need to get you a Ford part number :D

I don't need a part no. I just need to be able to spend more than an hour a day on the dammn thing.
Urgh, still working on getting the dash instaled tonight. I need to brace the 2 tie bars now as the dash wobbles side to side. X-(
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Sorry for that John Smiths induced whinge last night.
Right, new CV joint arrived this morning. This will fit in the IB5+ box on the passenger side, and allow me to retain the recoprop short driveshaft, meaning I only have to get the long/intermediate one made (saving around £350! in the process)

Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
that suspension looks fantastic.
i'm not sure whether to be glad i'm incapable of producing anything near the quality but get it done sooner, or if i'd rather have it look nice aswell but spend the time doing it.
well worth the extra time for doing it in my opinion though.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Dashboard is all now wired up, and ready to go in to the housing. I've made an extra notched tube to join the two stays that support the front of the dashboard, and I've araldited it in place. It should prevent the dashboard from wobbling now 8-)

Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Hi Graham
I am back after a little work on my duratec !! it has now 270-280 ch with the help of Raceco. I will fit it in the car next week and make the dyno.
I am now interested for the Quaife sequential gearbox you talk about a few months ago. I need to know the dimensions ( especially the lenght ) to check if i can use it in the Lotus :))
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Sounds a great package from Raceco. Can you let me know what you've had done.
Gearbox is essentially the same size as a normal IB5 FWD box. I'll let you have dimensions when it arrives.
Bit of a change of priorities this week, so that XR2's taken a back seat. Work and other things taking off.
Here's the pictures of the race spec suspension from Kustomengineering.com

If I feel inclined, I'll offer it up over the weekend. Got to finish off the wiring though, so this may have to wait a few weeks.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
nice, will make a change from wielding crimps to get the spanners out again
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
We have electrical power in the car! I've fitted the wires in to the circular connector housing on the control box, which means that the control box is now supplying electrical power to everything in the car)
I can turn the engine over on the starter.
I can run the wiper motor, and I have working rear lights. But the intermittent wiper relay blows a fuse half way through the wipe, which is most odd, but I have a theory.
Where's the beer? 8-)
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Top work Graham :thumb::clap:
I'm guessing Croft is a no go then:bolt::D
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
I think we can safely say "no". I wont have it up and running and fully tested by then.
And judging from the current discussion sounding unitary construction and the rules in Sports Libre on www.uphillracers.com I'm not going to have anyone to compete against in the BSC this year anyway. Bernards Escort is not legal, neither would Simon's Audi TT Quattro, nor Nick Manns Mannic Beattie, and the list goes on.

Sounds like going tarmac rallying was a good choice, MSA will end up ruining motorsport in this country!!!
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Here here. What a cockup. Apparently they hadn't changed the rules for 30 years, so thought a change was long overdue.
Its wiped out everyone I'd want to compete against in the BSC too. 8-(

Top Banana Graham. This is coming along really well - I can't wait to do the feature on it ;-)
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
I'll have the dash installed in the housing tonight.
Then I can swap the suspension over, and get the driveshaft ordered (3 weeks lead time)
Then I'll concentrate on the ECU wiring and arrange to take the car down to SFS at Luton for the hose fitting.
Quaife are modifying/developing the IB5+ sequential at the moment, they had some issues when they stripped it down, so its going to be another week or two. ;-)
Any ideas on venues for the shoot James?
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
We've got to do the shoot on some sort of hill climb, surely?! What are your thoughts, I'm open for suggestions?
Ps. I'm loving that dash, very jealous.

Very nice looking dash Graham. Well wrth the effort. Very cool looking.

would have been surprised if it hadn't worked, now just send me you address so I can survey your garage's security system

Thats not funny (given the current situation with my NFH)
Dashboard - done
Now I can fit the front suspension and get the driveshaft ordered. (3wk lead time)

Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Refitted the VW header tank tonight, in preparation for the trip to SFS in Luton.
Took the dashboard out the car and fastened the Cannon connector to the dashboard housing with M3 bolts and nuts.
Then I took it apart again, and removed the bulkhead bracket from the dash and sprayed it with satin black paint. Will reassemble tomorrow.
Still not started the suspension. If I get time over the weekend I'll make a start. Most likely it'll be Sunday evening before I can next get back outside for more than 10 mins. Cursed kids!
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Dash finished (finally)
Engine filled with oil, and new filter also fitted. Turns over on the button, and sounds sweet as a nut. Just needs fuel and ignition and its a goer.
Suspension fitted. Some problems, but waiting for Karl to get back to me. Had to take a hacksaw to the drivers side, as it wouldn't clear the Duratec sump, but it makes little difference to the setup.

Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Fitted the passenger side front suspension last night, same modifications as per the drivers side. Shortened the pin by 15mm and used 10mm collar above the bearing to give clearance to the disk brake.
There's around 3mm clearance between the disk and the bottom pin nut, which is more than enough.
I've also used high strength loctite to hold the pin in the knuckle joint. This will ensure that the pin cannot drop or move in any way.
The car now has way too much -ve camber, but Northampton Motorsport will set the chassis up, and the ECU, so its going to have to stay with them for a couple of days I'm sure.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Just a thought Graham, but for total peace of mind maybe it's worth considering wire locking those nuts on the bottom joints, even though they look like they're lock nuts, it's not something you'd like falling off I'm sure!!
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
You should be working for M Sport or similar , with the attention to detail you have .
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
what vw is the header tank off of mate ?
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
I got the header off ebay. Its for the Golf Mk4 onwards IIRC.

Never lock wired anything before. Do I just drill a hole in the bolt then? Is it special wire I need to use?
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Yeah pretty much Graham, just drill a small diameter hole (about 2mm or so) through the lot and wire lock it. Yes you have to get proper locking wire to do it, not sure where to get it from, I'll have to ask Matt where he got his from to do his car with.
EDIT: Merlin do it, but I'm sure you could probably find it cheaper elsewhere.... http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/pr...edium=Shopping
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Excellent! . Off topic a bit , but the IB5 box , do you know if they're all the same , aside from the bellhousings? I've to use a puma bellhousing to mate my KA box to the 1.4 Sigma lump .
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Sorry no idea on the IB5's. CTS or Burtons may be able to help (or someone else off here)
Fitted the rad and the trumpets last night. I really really need to get the driveshaft ordered (3 week lead time) so I'll get the output cup removed from the box this evening.

Thanks Adam
Wired the twin Spal cooling fans today, and connected up to the engine bay power loom, and they test out OK. (I have an override switch in the car so I can turn them on at will)
I've removed the trumpets and filters, as I reckon they'll get in the way when I have the hoses fitted.
I've bolted in the engine bay bulkhead connector finally, using M3 dome head socket screws. The engine bay loom is now fitted, and everything is plugged in. The dashboard temp display now shows the right temperature.

You are a perfectionist sir.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Working on the two ecu connectors today. Crimped 25 pins, with 18 to go.
Posted the bits off to commercial propshaft services for them to make the new driveshaft.
