Which Clutch Cable? Mk2 Escort - RS2000 Bell housingPlanned to get the car out a run today, started up then piiiiinnggg went the clutch cable! Luckily just in the yard.
Checking the posts, getting mixed reports on the correct cable to use. Some say Mk3 cortina cable then read a couple of guys using a standard mk1 escort cable as better suited length. Advice on which cable to get cheers?
Car is Mk2 Escort/Type 9/RS2000 Bell housing
The Cortina cable was used as it was longer than the std Escort one and it was easier to route to avoid fouling the manifold.
Where abouts did your previous cable brake? Check where it comes through the bulkhead as they are renown for chaffing there.

It probably has broken about the bulkhead as the break is about 5" from pedal. I'll check for chaffing, maybe need a grommet. Okay, I'll go for the Cortina one then, cheers.
Any tips on changing it? Easy enough?
The most awkward job is flicking the pin out of the plasic retaining clip on the pedal especially if there are door bars fitted to a Roll Cage. Fit the cable onto the pedal first and then onto the clutch fork,this can be a bit fiddly to get located if you have the RS bellhousing and sump. Dont forget to block the clutch pedal up whilst doing this otherwise it will be fighting against you and also have the lock nuts wound right back on the cable.Originally Posted by Allanscort
We always lagged the cable with some form of heat insulation where it was ran close to the exhaust manifold to try and prevent it from melting.

So the plastic connection at bulkhead just unscrews does it?
Ordered up the cable from Burtons and grommet set off ebay.

NO! it attaches inside the car onto the pedal by the plastic clip and pin I previously mentioned. You have to access it from inside the cockpit. The cable just pushes into the bulkhead.
Started work on this today, bit of previous owner bodging on this car as usual! The cable was angled in through bulkhead so swapped over the fitting off the old cable. Can see where it has been chaffing on bulkhead, still to address that.
I removed the cable from the clutch fork by just wiggling it. Imagine it will be a fun task to fit the new cable using this method...Not great access - Any pointers? Or just feed it in and keep wiggling it till it catchesOr is this method near impossible? I'm I best to remove the plug from the back of the housing to look in?
Also threaded end of cable just sat in the hole loose. I gather there should be an adaptor plate to screw this into? Funny how I have never had any bother with clutch before now. Is the adaptor plate necessary? Looks to me like it is.
If you have an RS alloy sump the threaded adjuster part is held here so no adapters required!
Thanks, yes, RS alloy bell housing. Okay I'll check it out over the weekend. Just seemed strange as the old one wasn't screwed into the housing at all, tried to turn the luck nut then realised it wasn't tight and I just pulled it out! The thread diameters looked to be the same, I forgot to check the length of the old and new cable, maybe the guy had too short a cable fitted. Hopefully the threads in the housing are okay.
