N/A Cosworth Cam Cover / Breather Help ???

Hi Folks and thanks for looking!

As you now know I have a N/A Cosworth MK2 for the collection. Well i HAVE BEEN INFORMED THAT THE BREATHER OUTLET ON TEH CAM COVER (CHEERS nICK!) Is in the wrong place!

My breather oulet is at the back of the cover in the missle and exiting directly through the top of the cover. Apperently this area is no good as its where high pressure oil is flying about. Something like that anyway!!

So I am going to sort this out by either getting hold of a new cover and fitting the exit breather pipe to the left had side of the cover and straight accross to the catch tank. Or indeed just block off the pipe I have fitted and drill out a new hole and fit new pipe in said location.

So folks can anyonw help out? I would like to either get hold of a cam cover this next two weeks and have it ready for my return or speak with someone that can do a weld up job on my return home in Feb??

So has anyone got a spare cover they can sell me or do a p/x on my cover.
Also how about David in Leeds?? Could I drive down to yours and have a bit of TIG done??

    CheeRS for now
    Dave...

Dave your breater is in the exact place cosworth designed it to be

With high reving N/A's you may want to revise this if and only if you have breathing trouble, then breating from the front of both sides may be an idea, it all really depends on the engine build, cars built to race tolerances will breath more than ones built to road tollerances.

BUT dont change it for the sake of it.

Clint, its not just for the sake of it mate. I am getting far too much oil coming through the brether pipe and blowing through the small filter on the oil catch tank. It then pisses all down the inner wing after a good blast.

The engine has been built basically for going full pelt and revs to 9-10K for fun.

What I am after is just stopping the oil going through the breather at such a rate and clarting things up.

    Any suggestions then??

Nick, what did Wayne say again mate??

    Dave
How much Power does it have ?

Does the breather tank have a return to the sump?

Clint, I am told the power is 230 brake. Also, there is a return to the sump yes, but possibly its blocked?

Can you think of any other possiblies??

Brian, I may take you up on that Cover if I dont get my one sorted. I will be in touch!

Msg for Nick...as I am away just now I dont suppose you can recall from memory where the second breather pipe comes from can you mate? Did wayne fit the breather system?

All I can think of is that the return pipe is blocked. This is after seeing a pic of a N/A race car Clint sent me and it has the cover pipe in exactly the same place as mine??

You want the 3 port one.

if you have a return to the sump and the oild is staying in the pot it must be blocked

Re: N/A Cosworth Cam Cover / Breather Help ???

I have mailed GGR today so should get a reply in the morning I hope!

Has anyone got a picture of below the exhaust manifold on a cosworth engine?? I am trying to think of possible solutions and thinking back the catch tank I have fitted recieves from the cam cover and from below the inlet manifold as normal. But the third pipe runs from the bopttom of the tank and goes to a connection below the exhaust manifold. Is this the sump entry point or is it also a breather point which will in effect blow any oily shite back up through the catch tank and make all kinds of mess??

I wish I was at home?? DOH!!

The more I think about it the more I am convinced I dont have a drain to the sump!! I bet the catch tank is full to the brim of muck and shite!!

On a normal breather system with a sump drain, where does the drain pipe attach to the sump then??

Nick, where for art tho ??

Dave it does look like a pipe is aiming at the return under the exhaust manifold.

The black tank looks a bit 'crude' pun intended

The breather pipes should goto a seperator that has 2 outputs one for a sump return in the bottom and one in the top to go off to a catch tank to catch water, I run engines like this and never had an issue.

Re: N/A Cosworth Cam Cover / Breather Help ???

Hi ya dave just found this thread

Thinking about what wayne said the other day, on both my saffs run breathers in the same place as your car , i would first job take of catch tank and check pipes are clear and oil can run down all three pipes, i do recall daryl getting catch tank cut and shut to make smaller , do not know weather that would have anything to do with it , but thinking hard i think there must be blockage somewere, remove pipes and clean, and flush catch tank to as see from there, i will try and found out as much info as i can
    cheers .
Also dave i have been scanning pick for ages to try and think why this is happending i also think were he had tank shortened , tank is now to shallow and maybe why oil is filling up and blowing through filter

Re: N/A Cosworth Cam Cover / Breather Help ???

Dave, My view is that the tank is too small. Daryl had the tank virtually cut in half for some reason...with the way the thing revs it's probably like pi$$ing in a thimble hence all the mess!

Re: N/A Cosworth Cam Cover / Breather Help ???

Cheers Lads, puts my mind at rest!!

I have been looking about and doing some reading and have come up with the conclusion that I am going to get a seperator tank for the breather pipes to go into (ala GGR) and then from there into a seperate catch tank for any left over shite and sludge. There is loads of free room under the bonnet so I will get as big a tank as possible.
Looking at GGR's stuff they seem rather expensive for what effecivly is just an ally box with holes in it! I am going to get in touch with Ralloy and the likes with some dimensions and get two custom tanks made up at a fraction of the cost!!
I have already strated to "collect" and "borrow" a load of Swagelock fittings from work to make the system up on my return.

Thanks for all the inputs, I will post back when its all sorted and show you the results!!

    Is it next week yet??

One of these little minxes should do the trick...

    http://www.ralloy.com/content/catalo...uct4.asp?ID=11

But I will get it made as big as possible!!

Also just mailed them about making up a seperator tank to match!! Sweet!!
