In my mk1, I've had to move the handbrake back slightly for the same reason.
The engine is mounted on the World Cup cross member so shouldn't be any further back than usual. I take it my only option is to move the handbrake back as the gear leaver can't be moved?

cut a bit out the handbrake lever, job done
I just shortened my lever...if I remember correctly if you grind the end of the button,
it all comes apart,then shorten the lever and rod thats inside... then weld the button back onto the rod
job done
