    cheap sideways fun in e28's

if you like your old escorts etc but don't want to pay the skyhigh prices for one , i can recommend the e28 model 5 series as a cheap fun car . You can get an m535i for well under £1500 and they have a 210 bhp 3.5 litre 6 pot engine , lsd , recaro seats and are great to drive . These early 5 series cars have beautiful sweet handling , loverly steering and good brakes . They just love the tail out action and you can get massive power out of them for a couple of grand . These big six engines with turbos on them easy make over 400 bhp on low boost levels with torque to die for . You can also get the rare M5 model which has 290 bhp 24 valve twin cam M-power 6 pot engine . These great cars still can be had for arond £6000 for a clean one , £3000 for a tatty one and £8000+ for a minter . Then there's the alpina models , my 185,000 mile 1985 B9 3.5 has a dyno proven 260 bhp and 280 ilbs feet of torque and they cost the same as a rusty rs2000 , £2000 for a tatty one , £3500 for a clean one , £5000 for a minter . If you stripped one out with plastic windows and panels etc you could have a great track car for no money at all

i love those old E28's and the even rarer now E12's.

that m30 engine is a great engine to tune on the basis of the results i got tuning the very similar 4 pot m10 it should be good for 400bhp atmo, and well over 600 in turbo form, yum yum

just so happens i know where there a car up for grabs.... great project for when i've finished the E30, RS2000 and Alfa Sud not to mention getting my GSXR7/11 back on the road......... ok maybe not

nice one graham , most of the mk1+2 escort posse round here have got e28's and e30's for daily drivers . You just can't beat them for the money they cost , my old e28 is as much fun to drive as my mk1 escort or dare i say it even more fun

yeah unless your escorts got a BDA in it the beemers straight sixes win hands down on the noise front

Re: cheap sideways fun in e28's

e28's are cheap to run most mechanical parts can be bought cheaply from the likes of euro car parts or german and swedish, there is quite a bit of part interchangability between e12/28/23/24/34/32 beemers.

engine rebuilds dont come cheap but then ther are enough cars in scrap yards with good engines not to worry about rebuilding engines unless your going for it so to speak

yes as graham says they are pretty cheap to run . If your used to paying escort mk1 prices you will think it's christmas evryday . They also do massive mileages between rebuilds , my e28 3.5 litre engine has done 185,000 miles and has only had a top end freshen up , should do 250 ,000 all day . On the dyno last december for a check over the engine is still making 260 bhp and 280 ibls feet of torque , even more than when it was new , flipping brilliant motors
