My Mk2 Escort Sprint Car (A Vessel for frustration relief)

I am a member of the Borough 19 Motor club and I have been competing on and off in sprints since 1996.

The car itself started off in sprints in the road legal class, but now competes in class C7 (Modified Production Cars) which takes more effort with trailers etc... but it also means that i dont need heavy stuff like lights etc! and the good part is that I have much more freedom with the cars spec!

and if it breaks I can trailer all the bits home!

I like sprints because most of the competitors are down to earth, and even the ones in your class would give you a helpful hand! (Just don't go asking them for advice on spring rates etc...!)

The cars changed quit a bit over the years but below is a brief spec of the car as it stands.

    Body

    Transmission
AP single paddle clutch,5 speed sierra quaife pro gearbox, rose jointed lever,
    one peice prop,english axle,quaife ATB,standard shafts.
    Suspension
    Front:Leda 2&1/4" adjustable struts,eccentric top mounts,twin-cam roll bar,anti-dive kit,quick rack,h/duty mounts.
    Rear:4-linked,panhard rod,leda 2&1/4" coilovers.

Bloody hell... he's posted ... about time too Tel,

As you can tell i've been assciated with Terry for some time, and its his cartoons that you see in my sig... couldnt get him to do the ones on my workshop sign though, had to do them myself

Tel's car is a cracking car and is always turned out clean and smart and shows that sprinting dosnt damage the car... even when bouncing 2 foot in the air at Wethersfied Airbase

    Nicely turned out car Terry

I remember seeing this car featured in a mag a few years back, was it CCC or similar?

btw why has the car got Roger on the number plate, when your names Terry?

Thanks steve, i do my best

it was in CCC a couple of years back, yeah.
and in Fast Car Magazine, many years before that.

    That always confuses people
My dads been calling me 'Roger Ramjet' since i started doing sprints.
    so...thats the only reason really.

    Sprints at Santa Pod

I just wanted to share this picture of my mk2 that was taken at a Santa Pod sprint many moons ago, it was taken just before the long drive home.. after a hard days sprinting!

It was a really good day, and the thrill of thrashing the car up n down the strip was pretty exciting, which i think could have been due to those big metal barriers a few feet away from the car!!

Yeah that was a great day. Awesome sprint course cos as you say we had to drive flat out as close to the barrier as possible and then go from flat in top, to 1st gear for the hairpins at each end.

On my last run I had a little moment, I was flat in 5th when the throttle jammed full open, left skid marks for 400 yards and just missed the barriers by inches. Did hit the biggest cone I've ever seen though

Have to dig out some more of our old sprint pics

Re: My Mk2 Escort Sprint Car (A Vessel for frustration relief)

just thought i'd put up a couple of pics of the new gearbox tunnel & floorpan etc.. which were fitted recently by Gary at Retro Motorsports in Harlow

The floorpan was necessary due to a little accident with a trolley jack!!

& the tunnel now gives plenty of room for the 5 speed pro box along with a proper mount as well.

    Re:Debden sprint

Did the Debden sprint yesterday and managed to get a 3rd place trophy! and I was chuffed to bits, as it was my first time there and I wasnt that far behind the 2 Fwd cars in front!

It was a great course to drive on, and it felt a bit like a short rally stage!

hopefully i'll be a lot quiker there next year!

I was also surprised that out of around 80 cars, mine was the only escort there!!!

Re: My Mk2 Escort Sprint Car (A Vessel for frustration relief)

Looks too soft on the front, either needs a stiffer ARB,an anti dive kit or if you've got compression struts stiffer springs, or all three.what springs are you running? It's also possibly too high at the back but hard to tell the way it's diving.

Are you a Lydden on the 27th?

Thats what I thought from the pictures!
The rear does seem to be lifting a lot!, and the weight transfer diagonally across the car is a bit excessive!

Just fitted a pair of Gaz gold adjustables with 250 springs which may be too soft! the car has an anti-dive kit and twin cam roll bar.

    hopefully at lydden, yes
I may have to take some harder springs to try!

imho you should be looking at 4-500lb springs for use with slicks/slicky rubber, that should give the front end a fair bit of bite and if makes it slightly understeery then use the loud pedal to cure it

With a pinto engine fitted I'd reckon on starting with 320- 350lb springs on the front, then going stiffer if it's no good. What's on the back?
