Mk2 Escort Atlas Diff, blowing oil out of the breather..

I've just replaced my original cover with an aftermarket one, drilled the hole in the exact same place as the other but for some reason it's blowing oil out, I've got a temporary piece of pipe in the hole which reaches all the way up to the top of the shockers, I'm wondering if the pipe I've used isn't pushed in the housing far enough but not entirely sure, just wondered if anyone has ever had the same problem, it never did it before..

If the breather is on the back cover it is probably having oil thrown out of it by the crown wheel. if you have a pipe style breather make a U shape in it to slow the air down so the oil drops out back into the axle. put a pic up so we can see it

All the axles I have seen have the breather on the axle tube. This is usually on comp cars. Do you need a breather ?

Lol sorry I meant does the axle really need to breath😄 have a look at the gartrac web site they breathe theirs on the side of the casing. Not sure why you now have the issue when previously you didn't but it is almost oil being sloshed up the pipe from the crown wheel etc

Does the atlas have a breather from factory my English axle does but again it's on the axle tube and that's how ford did it.👍

Ha sorry me being a dummy, there's no breather in the tubes, it was originally on the back plate and that was a genuine ford back plate, your exactly right it is the crown wheel flinging oil up the pipe, I've put a kink in the pipe and put a filter on the end, just need to take it out for a test run to try it, I am wondering when I put the pipe in I don't think it's on far enough if that makes any sense, possibly above where the crown wheel sits so it's in the direct firing line of the oil..

yes axles do need to breath, in use they get warm that will raise the pressure of air inside them and cause leaks if they cannot breath, same for gearboxes they need to breath too

My atlas had a breather on top of the tube and that was a standard axle, I put it back in the same place after I had it retubed to make it a baby atlas
When I grow up I will have a MK1 Escort

I must be all growed up now then and paying for it!

There is an atlas axle that comes with a tube in the rear diff cover ans it is normally on the p100 axles all the other models of atlas i have seen have been in the half shaft tubes.

Re: Mk2 Escort Atlas Diff, blowing oil out of the breather..

Mines a baby of a Capri with the LSD, the friend of mine who built it me mentioned that sometimes they were on the tubes and others on the back plate, I believe I have sorted it now I've put the old back plate back on, I noticed on this that the breather tube goes further down and sits lower in the casing than the one that was leaking, so it was the crown wheel flinging oil up the breather, I've been out a couple of times and it's not doing it, thanks everyone for the advice etc...

Checked mine (sourced from a 2.8 Capri) and it has a breather on the right hand axle tube, about 6" from the diff.
