Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

just a quicky, only a little progress this morning as i start work soon, i put lifters and cams in, cams caused a bit of head scratching as it was early in the day and i'm using two inlet cams! which means std marks etc dont line up, got there though.

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

    yesterdays progress,

drilled and tapped the timing chain tensioner body to take an adjustable stop, the idea being teh chain is still tensioned hydralically as std, but the tension cannot back off on over run or when the engines left standing.

pic shows first yb ex manifold adapter plate on engine and modified water rail

second adapter plate, i just hope i have a gas tight seal between them, theres no gasket just some ultra high temp silicon as used on boilers and lots of bolts!

I am watching your progress, but don't really know what's going on.
I have entered your pic in the "Weld of the week" thread.

hope so, that all depends on the engine holding together on the dyno and me having enough £££ left to actually race

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

progress as slowed somewhat, the neighbours cars keep breaking down!

spent most of the day faffing with the engines valve clearances, i always set them a bit big when i build the head up on the bench as they always close up when you torque the head down to the block, but this time they had closed up much more than normal so they were all too tight, the only reason i can think is that the ferriday head gasket doesnt compress anything like as much as std ones, so the head bolts compress the head more than usual, anyway after several hours with a load of shims, feeler gauges and a micrometer the clearances are now finally right, well they will be until the thing is dyno'd then will probably want doing again

couldnt be bothered with pics of tappet shims so i toook a pic of one of the front wings instead, they have now had a quick lick of filler. primer and paint and look quite tidy, not perfect, but its a race car it only needs to look tidy, besides i've neither the time, money or patients to do a perfect job.

i really cant be bothered with bodywork, but back in my dim distant past i worked in a body shop for a couple of years, the real problem i have these days is i dont use a paint gun enough and have to re-learn every time i use one and i dont have the patients anymore to do a good prep job, and then its usually using different equipment and paint type each time

not much progress today got to go to work soon,

i bolted the n/s engine mount on after reinforcing it as it cracked several times last year, if i had realised i was in welding competition i would of taken a pic of it before painting it

and refitted the oil lines that feed the piston cooling jets

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

no progress as such over the last couple of days as the AA is keeping me very busy, although ebay has turned me up a 4x4 oil drain pipe for the turbo at the princly sum of £2, and i've just ordered one of these jobbies, which will allow the emerald to richen the mixture up and cool things off a bit if the exhaust temp looks like going too high

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

had to make a spacer so the oil drain pipe would fit the turbo and clear the manifold, still got to remake the actuator bracket, as the turbo orientation is now different, and it now clear that i wont be able to take the short route with the turbo down pipe, it just never going to fit past the steering, suspension and gearbox, so i'm going to have to follow last year up and over route going round the back the cylinderhead and out the n/s of the engine bay.

although before i get that far i've got to figure out a way to tighten one of the turbo to manifold mounting bolts, the one by the intake compressor nearerst to engine is impossible to get to

Can you not split the turbo and then get to it..or will that leave the the turbo's bolts in the same s**t.
(you can tell i dont know about turbo's can you split them?)

looking at it agian whilst remaking the actuator bracket i think if i get some studs and "k" nuts which have small size hex and remove the oil drain i will just about be able to get in there

not too much progress, i've connected most of the wiring loom, made a new bracket for the actuator and fitted the rad and intercooler as well as ordering the bends to make the new down pipe

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

quick up date, pics to follow, after finishing the exhaust at midnight the day before the rollers, i finally got water in the engine and ran it up, fixed a couple of minior leaks, putting the car on the trailer and promptly knocked the exhaust off again

anyway i made it to the rollers, the result, well ok ish, it didnt break or do anything nasty on the rollers.

i had feared the Yb manifold would cost me a big bunch of power probably around 50bhp, it actually cost me 65bhp and has made the engine much more peaky, but it runs and will do for lydden which isnt a power circuit anyway.
i have a few tricks up my sleeve which might find some of the lost power before brands, but ultimatly i need to rethink the exhaust manifold, but thats going to be a winter project

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

    cheers david,

was a great day, finished 2nd and then 1st in class which equated to 5th, and 4th Overall, oh i do like beating class A cars.......................... bring yours on david.............

bigger front wheels and tyres have changed the cars balence its much more oversteery now and most corners a i was using opp lock to catch the rear end although mostly still with my foot in., so maybe the loss of power wasnt a bad thing.

the big power loss really does notice in a straight line so i was pleasently suprised to find i could out drag john cross's V8 eurocar up hill!

i had a titantic battle with john for most of the second race, eventually he got the better of me into devils elbow, which is my cars weakest corner as i have very poor traction out of it, but caught him going up the hill, to turn in earlier and cut inside him at north turn, and get a good run on him down hairy hill, and get the inside line at paddock, unfortunatly i just couldnt hold as tighter line as i needed and we did a bit of wheel to wheel rubbing and i didnt quite make it past him so i now have some bodywork to do and need a new outer rim for the rear wheel.

it would of been one hell of a move if it had stuck, but i'm pleased i had the confidence in the car to try it, rather than just let him go as i could of easily done as teh class win was in the bag, but hell we were racing.

some battle damage pics to follow soon when my cameras batteries are charged

Was a gutsy move, Graham. I never thought I'd see both cars come out of the corner, indeed at one point John must have run very wide and disappeared from view (across the gravel a bit?) an we thought oh percy: . Still not sure how he made it out in front of you

The car looked great all round and some bloody gutsy moves past the opposition, I spoke to john and he said he had thouroughly enjoyed the race between you and Greg.

    Well done

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

    cheers gary,

shame about the damage, but as far as john and i were concerned it was a racing incident, in an awesome race, i didnt make a do or die punt at a gap that wasnt there and he didnt shut the door on me,

that move at paddock well i almost made it stick, it was difficult to judge exactly when to brake and turn in from mid circuit alongside john rather than at the circuits edge like i had done every other lap,

as i said in an earlier post i was pleased that i had the confidence in the car to fight straight back at john rather than let him go.

although the problem is unique to the car at lydden i really need to find a away to gain grip and traction out the elbow because thats where i was very vunerable, but without making the car even more oversteery, a new set of plates in the LSD might help, but i think the issue is a bit deeper than that, i might try raising the rear ride height a bit and stiffening the front dampers to limit the weight transfer.

still cant believe i could out drag john UP the hill though and how little the thundersaloon pulled away

well done graham i was watching you all the way.it was good to see the car finish a race in such a high posistion.and it nearly held together other than dropping a few of its fluids that race with you and john was excellent and you did very well to get that position.shame about the battle scars but hey thats racing

And you boys take the piss out of us rally types for throwing cars at trees!

Anyone looking at these pictures would think circuit racing is a full-contact sport.

Just kidding... Well done anyway - and well done for getting the car out in time Graham - I hadn't read your thread for a few days but was very surprised to read today that it actually made the race!

So, maybe a daft question, but what are the benefits of this new turbo setup then? They must be pretty big if its worth sacrificing 65bhp?

    cheers Fossie

hope fully the new turbo set up will produce reliability i had far too many dnf's last year or started races with stupidly big power and finished them with stupidly low power.

the fabricated manifold wasnt physically strong enough to cope with the weight/heat/expansion caused by the turbo

i've repaired the arches and changed the bent rim, fitted a new spoiler, and faired in the rad and intercooler as i noticed the engine ran cooler without the spoiler.

also got a rolling road session booked may 1st to try and ring a few more gee gee's out of the motor
