, i'd be in real trouble if i was there with the car, it does run if i could reach the switch gear to start it ,
i suppose i could get someone else to push the start button , but i think not being able to reach the steering wheel might cause me a few problems

Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

i've been considering changes to my rear spoiler so a quick meassure up of the existing one is needed to see how much bigger i can go within the rules

the rules say the spoiler cannot exeede half the rear screen height, so first i measure the height of the screen

then the height of the spoiler, i was hoping to use a higher more effective spoiler, as the current one doesnt look like its as high as the rules allow, but unfortunatly it is

and guess who wrote the rule regarding max spoiler height? yes you guessed it me

a bit more meassuring showed i can move the spoiler back 4 inches though which will make it more efficient and give it more leverage on the car

Just fit a bigger bumper like peugeot did on their wrc 206's and you can move it back even further

I'd sell tha batmobile spoiler and make a 'proper' one though

that was the plan, but when i realised i couldnt make it taller it kind of scuppa'd the idea, i might keep it, move it back add a gurney strip, a lower element and some outer winglets instead, well see, i'll have to have a look around and see how cheaply i can make one, i do like the idea of the big endplates on the current one as they should add to the sideways stability

So your gonna keep the batmobile one but change the cross section of the wing, change the supports and make it wider

I'd say make a new one trigger

Just caught up on the last couple of pages. To be honest i haven't been paying enough attention.
Fair play to you Graham, to keep on modding a home built car with the results you get is very impressive.

not really, i write the rules for the good of the championship, and try not to change them without good reason, actually although i write them i cant really change them to just to suit my car, and i think some of the other committee members might have something to say about it, shame really, never mind it makes it more of a challenge,

Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

no progress on the car as such, but have done a little i've cleared the concrete pad my builder put down in feb and then buggered off for 6 months, so he can start work on my garage extension saturday

the extension will be 13x20 foot and turn my 2 car garage into a 3 car and give me more working space, it also means once the alfa finally is finished ( please can i have a gearbox to put in it greg), my RS, bike and Both my Beemers will be able to live indoors and i'll still have some space to work in, at the moment only the race car is inside, its taking its toll on the bike and 635 but the RS is really suffering being left outside.

Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

the car car has had some thought, i've found a company which will be able to do me a dry sump kit, they are coming back to me with a price, i dont really need a dry sump, but it will allow me to move the engine back without having to mess around with the steering or crossmember, it wont be cheap but probably the best way forward.

the same company have also told me about there "demon" diff mods which would idealy suit my car, as the conventional way of uprating the diff is to add more preload which would turn it into an oversteering monster,

finally i've been talking gearboxes with various people, mines fine, but not ideal, with a stupidly low 1st and not much better 2nd, but a lovely 3,4,5th which means thats all i ever use 3,4,5, so i know the car would be faster with a better set of ratios,

apparently if you can find them there is a motorsport m3 set of ratios for my box which would be ideal, although hidiously expensive, and when i say expensive i mean it a quaife squential sixspeed and custom bellhousing would be cheaper

quaife came up with some good prices making a switch to a quaife 5 speed dog box well worth considering although probably still well out of budget,

finally another contact has a box should be the dogs danglies in a race car which will be up for grabs later in the year, a prodrive 6 speed dog box

i've an idea on what it will cost and i cant see the budget stretching to it, it will also worry the hell out of me how much something like that will cost to repair if it ever breaks

no progress on the car yesterday, was thinking this morning that really i should forget all about gearboxes and pay of my credit card instead, a sensable if not a very exiting prospect.

it rained a fair bit yesterday, which slowed the builders, still at least they got one wall up as for when they wil do the next instalment though

standing next to it that wall looks like a lot more than 20 foot long, although im kind of already thinking the garage could of gone a bit longer still, although with a total length of 38 feet its taking up nearly half the garden now

still no more progress on the car, but the garage now has its roof timbers and i made it a door and frame from steel and bricked up the apex, so it now just needs rendering outside and the rest of the roof and i can start using it

Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

it took me all day but its now got a roof, i used 9 sheets of 8x4 ply, and had to cut them all because the builder hasnt managed a to get a single right angle in the building

if you look hard you can just see my RS outside my back door

i've now covered the roof with a couple of huge tarpulins to keep the rain out until the builder can felt it, which might be a while as he's only working on it one day a week and has yet to finish rendering the outside walls,

still now it has a roof, i just need to throw some paint around inside it, run some electrics and start on the race car

speaking of which, compomotive phoned yesterday, my wheels are ready thats less than 2 weeks sice ordering , for the moment i have only ordered 2 rear wheels as i want to try and sqeeze the same size 10x18 all the way round the car, the reason is that wide 17+18 inch wheels take up so much space im going to struggle to take them all with me, allowing for spare wheels i need to take fewer if the car uses the same wheels both ends

another busy day yesterday, walls painted, floor sealed and painted, and i've started on the electrics, unlike the origonal part of the garage which is very short on sockets and everything is run off extension leads and the lighting somewhat hit or miss i will put plenty of sockets and lights in and wired so they are indepndantly switchable

I was looking at these the other day and noticed that they started with an offset of 1, why don't they start with zero

Can't wait to see it on the car, be great if you can get 4 that size on there, its the same size as they run on all the quick skylines, I should know I saw about 50 of them last night (guess where we were!)
They had 265 series tyres on there's i think, is that what you've got in mind?

cheers dave, as the front part of the garage is full width of the garden a door at both ends is really handy, it means i can put cars and trailers in the garden if needed, it makes my trailer more secure too when not in use, as it cant get nicked off the drive, cos its in the garden and you would have to shift a whole fleet of motors to get to it as well as break into and out of the garage again.

if i try i can get 4 cars in it now, maybe i should be into mini's instead because i could get about 10 of them in there

Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

garage isnt finished yet but i've now got most of the fleet in it

race car is in the new extension with all my tools

the front is now just storage, gregs alfa is under the green sheet in the far corner, and as you can see the 635 and RS are keeping my bike company, trailers still in the garden, passat lives across the garge door blocking it and the AA van being the only thing i park in the street, unless im using the passat then its across the door

now back to the race car this is one of the 10x18's on the front, this wheel give more brake caliper clearance than my 17 inch rims, so i can use it without a spacer i need on the 17's which helps offset the extra width, the trailing edge of the arch needs minor mods but it goes without drastic bodywork mods

ive only got about 22 degrees of steering lock before the tyre fouls on the inner arch, i cant really do anything about that so 15point turns will be order of the day in the paddock and i need to limit the steering racks travel, but im well pleased it fits as it makes life much simpler in wheel and tyre terms

yeah i do have good neighbours, i'm a good neighbour too, i make very little noise and all the neighbours find my car repairing skills very handy and cheap, the only thing they could complain about is the state of my garden which does tend to ressemble a breakers yard, infact the more of it i cover with garage the tidier it gets

Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

i took a pick of the clearance between the top of the tyre and bottom of the inner wing, hmmm its getting tight there i definatly cant lower the car and more!

i also decided i didnt like my new rear arch, so i cut it off!

welded the inner and outer skins back togther and bent/ folded/hammer a new arch from some sheet steel

Nice work, will look good with a bit of paint on

Are you running that size all round now then. I assume the front arches are easier to mod than the rears Or are you still limiting the lock on the rack??

Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

i want to run the same size all the way round as it makes life much simpler and cuts down on the number of wheels i have to cart around which really is getting an issue because the 10x18s take up so much space.

yes front arches are easier to mod than rears but i stil need to limit the lock by quite a bit because they foul on the vertical part of the inner wing with and real amount of steering lock

a bit more meassuring showed i can move the spoiler back 4 inches though which will make it more efficient and give it more leverage on the car
Just a thought...If you're sticking with the batmobile-style rear wing, do the regs permit you to run a 'lip' at the top of the rear screen (nice profile pic here) which would help with keeping the airflow attached at the rear, making the spoiler much more efficient...

the rules wont allow a lip on the roof unforunatly.

i got a couple of hours in the garage over the last two days and and cut the old o/s/r arch away, welded the skins back together and fabricated a new wider wheel arch

    18's here we come

Looking good Graham, will it run the same ride height with those wheels then?

Guess you'd better order up the other pair of wheels now

    wheels are already on order,

the bigger rolling radius is going to lift the rideheight about 1/2 inch, but in going to have to live with that, as there just isnt sufficent clearance between the underside of the innerwing reinforcements to lower it any more, and in any case winding the suspension down will compromise the geometry

Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

i might have to hold off on some of the winter mods as i'm blowing most of the budget on 5 new wheels and tyres 4 NEW slicks for the 18's and 4 NEW wets for the 17's which in total is the best part of £3K

i havent raced on new rubber since i had the 2002
