    Re: Which intercooler?

i would go for a front mounted intercooler as they are far more efficient the rad tec one fits very nice too

    Re: Which intercooler?

definitely front mount... i had a GRS on my series one and didn't have to chop the front out. Personally i'd try to get one that was single pass though if you can.

grs are very good but you just have to wait for them to be made lol but worth the wait some times

    Re: Which intercooler?

basically single pass is when the air goes into the intercooler one end and exits the other. in the case of an rsturbo it means using a reverse charge carrier. unless they've changed the GRS is twin pass, but i think the new Pace one and the Radtec are single pass. (not 100% though!)

    Re: Which intercooler?

I'd go for a GRS front mount aswell mate, twin pass and bolt straight in. They're fitted to some fo the fastest RST's in the country.

    Re: Which intercooler?

    a bit about coolers

However, this is not the only solution and we produce two alternatives both of which offer improved ACT's over the GRS and similar items. Shown below are two such intercoolers for the Escort RS Turbo. These intercoolers utilise either two or three Sierra RS Cosworth Intercoolers welded together to form one huge intercooler capable of keeping Air Charge Temperatures as low as possible, and with almost zero pressure drop across the intercooler, it makes for an extremely efficient intercooler setup. It is not as straight forward as off the shelf bolt on unit's though, as it requires some modifications to fit, and makes fitting a large fan virtually impossible but is the ultimate intercooler for an RS Turbo. Please note that the triple version is only available for the S2 ERST, the S1 ERST has insufficient space without major remodeling of the front end!
The twin and triple Cosworth intercooler conversion are single pass intercoolers which means the intercooler outlet is on the opposite side to standard. This requires the charge cross over pipe to be re-fabricated in order to complete the installation. We produce a mirror image of the original item giving a factory look but improved function!

One major part of RS Turbo tuning which is commonly overlooked when tuning a car is the Air Charge Temperature cooling setup. The standard Intercooler on an Escort RS Turbo will only keep ACT's down to a satisfactory level (ie 50 degrees C or lower) with boost levels of no more than around 10psi. Most stage 1 RS Turbo's are chipped and are running between 15psi and 17psi of boost. This is all very well until you realise that the ACT's associated with these boost levels in conjunction with a standard Intercooler are excessive to say the least. They would be well over 70 degrees C almost straight away.
As ACT's rise, power is lost due to the the air containing less oxygen than when the air is cool. An effective Intercooler will keep your ACT's ideally below 40-45 degrees C at all times, thus ensuring that maximum power is always available even in hot weather.
Fitting a GRS Motorsport Large Intercooler to a Series 2 provides only one small problem, which is the radiator fan. Due to the size and location of the Intercooler, the standard Escort RS Turbo radiator fan can only be used if it is mounted on the front of the intercooler (therefore blowing through both the intercooler and the radiator). Most customers prefer not to mount anything on the intercooler for two reasons :- how it looks, and to not restrict air-flow to the intercooler. Therefore a solution has been found in the shape of a very thin radiator fan from Kenlowe. We can supply you the Kenlowe 10" Fan which is only 46mm thick, which fits in between the Intercooler and the Radiator at a discounted price. This solves any of the engine cooling issues when stuck in traffic.

The GRS Motorsport Large Intercooler for the S2 has undergone some more design changes to make it an even more efficient product. The latest version of this Intercooler, named the "EVO 3" utilises a totally new core, which is even wider for better air flow and therefore reduced pressure drop. The volume of the Intercooler has also been increased by 17% allowing the air to pass through the Intercooler for longer therefore being further cooled. The end tanks on the Intercooler are also as matched in size as possible, again for the best possible flow.
Caution must be given when fitting this intercooler as water temperatures may rise depending on ambient temperatures.
Please check your radiator is in good working order
