1.6 Mazda BP in an escort.

I've just bought the Miata 1.6 motor and it's in my driveway ready for stuffin' in the mk2, my mate told me however that I need to run a high pressure fuel pump, possibly in-tank to make the fuel injection system work, http://www.todaracing.com/ images/engine_miata_bp_b.jpg , is it true or can i run it using the facet silvertop pump? any advice is greatly appreciated, got the lump for 150quid.

Yep you need to run a fuel injection fuel pump and fit new fuel lines that can handle the pressure of injection. You can use an external fuel pump mounted under the boot floor near the fuel tank outlet. You shouldn't get surge problems as the mk2 fuel tank is narrow and tall (I used a Sierra Cosworth fuel pump and filter in its cradle).

a std electric pump works at around 5-6 psi
a fuel injection pump works 50+psi

Omigawd, do I have to modify the petroltank for an in-tank pump then? or is it an in-line pump just like a facet or mitsuba? Thanks! I'm pretty chuffed with the lump as it looks the dog's dangglers than the old pinto( )sorry ol' chum...

no you dont have to have an in tank pump, car manufacturers only started using them from the mid 80's, so there are lots of injection pumps that can be fitted inline, just have a wander around your local scrap yard. most injection fuel pumps have massive spare capacity so just find one off an injected car with the right size fittings, as long as it works it will be fine on your mazda engine

Thanks Graham, I'll update you if it works, the spec sheet says I need around 80psi for the system to work, the pump on the miata is in-line and its the same as a 93 Toyota supra and the 626, Thanks again! Cheers!

the fuel pressure is down to the pressure regulator not the pump, the pump merely has to be able to keep up, are you sure about that pressure figure even by fuel injection standards thats high

I thought of putting this motor into one of my Mk1's years ago.. I had to move and didn't get to do it. I'd like to see the end results. Good Luck!
