Re: Time for a fresh un up

new pistons ,full bottom end rebuild might have a polish up on a few bits ,new valves and guides new cams bd 14 inlet or both ?recheck head ports valve seats full core plug change chop a bit more off the flywheel 2 wd exhaust if i can get it in ,poss new turbo a bit bigger,500 manifold escort throttle body then save up[ for my ecu ,then a paint up engine bay and inside sort the axle out ,and another load of cash gone on the money pit,oh well its for a good cause ME

clint whats you thoughts on the pistons in my engine with the washed area on the inlets ,i am not sure if it is because the pistons are quite oily so they look cleaner !

Re: Time for a fresh un up

All gueswork from just looking but I dont mind lloking silly if I am wrong LOL :

It looks like its been running a bit on the rich side and maybe the squish is loose (guessing youve not been pussy footing it and that it still has hydraulic followers in, no piston to valve contact has me guessing the pistons arent as high as they should be).

The exhausts look like they have had 3 angled seats cut or possibly loose guides resulting in poor seating and heat transfer, as they have quite successfully burnt the carbon white.

Certianly not had any problems in there, are the bores good ?

Re: Time for a fresh un up

What made you decide it was time for a freshen up?
How do you decide these things, and how long was it since you last did it?
What have you been doing with it in the meantime.
I guess it isn't done as a regular 6k service, so is it something you have to do after a certain time or is it after a certain amount of punishment.
Just wondering really as Clint has done the same to Smiffy's motor too.

Re: Time for a fresh un up

Nick, your engine bay looks like all it needs a is a polish, not a repaint
Dave,im thinking of having my engine out this winter for a check over, probably new bearings etc. Best to catch it early and not leave it years and years before a fresen up then having to pay out more and more money
I think you know when its time to take it out,i think you can feel if its starting to feel tired and maybe starting to use a bit more oil than it used to. Mine seems to hardly use any oil and i never have to put any water in it,maybe im not driving it hard enough
So thats why i decided not to have the engine out last winter as its ok at the moment (touch wood)
    Sorry to Hi-Jack the thread

Re: Time for a fresh un up

the reason for rebuild is it is knocking when cold and i hate that ,got an oil leak from back of head block somewhere chuffs a bit of oil now ,so its time to save it before it chucks a rod through the side ,and and a few goodies i have been collecting so we can add a few more horses.
clint the valve guides are worn and piston heights are the same, just polished the tops when machined the bowl, it has done the usual valve to piston on 1 and 4 ,the bores are std just hope 0.5 will do it .i am just thinking about pulling te bottm end out now ,but its sunday shall i or shan't i
