Duratec convert to coil on plug

I want to convert from coil pack to COP has anybody got a wiring diagram so I can make up a loom to connect from the existing coil connector.
    Thanks

its not that simple! coil pack only has two trigger wires, to run cop you need 4, or you have to wire the coils in pairs, which may or may not work depending on your ecu and the coils concerned.

TBH id say its a waste of time even trying, in my experience coil packs are actually more reliable the cop

Thanks for that. It's an Emerald ecu I was going to wire them in pairs but wasn't sure if they should be in parallel or series. The reason for the change was the dyno man reckoned the spark was dropping of at about 7000 and plugs didn't fix it. Might just try another coil first. Thanks again.

arh right, theres nothing like giving someone all the info!

the emerald is quite capable of running coil on plug, but you will need to add some wires to the loom and reconfigure the ecu drivers.
ive had numerous engines on coil pack running to over 8000rpm, so your problem is something other than you using a coil pack

Sorry about that yes I intend to make a small loom to wire back to the 3 pin connector that goes to the existing coil. I presume the centre pin is positive and the other 2 are triggers for the pairs 1&4 and 2&3. I noticed the Emerald has a box to tick in ecu setup for COP is that all that needs to be done or are there other things to alter.
    Cheers

correct centre pin is live, assuming you are not running an 8 injector set up the ecu will have drivers to run cop, but as i said you will need more wires, the cop setting merely tells the ecu its not running wasted spark, you still need to configure the drivers to the appropriate coils

Re: Duratec convert to coil on plug

One possible problem I see electrically using the extg coilpack wiring is that if you pair the COPs in serial configuration then supply voltage is shared so 12v coils will be getting 6v. If paired in Parallel configuration, then the coil resistance is halved so amp draw is doubled. Most COPs are pretty low resistance to start with - usually sub 1 ohm, so if paired parallel and 0.5ohms they would try to draw 24A ! Most ecu ign. outputs are load limited to around 5-6A. So both set ups will be certainly below optimum IMO.

Thanks guys All very interesting I had been wondering whether to go series or parallel only net diagrams I found were series. I have asked Emerald but no reply as yet.
So is general opinion stick with what I've got and replace possible suspect coil pack, if so which one 988F 12029BA is that likely to be an improvement on my

Presumably you've the plug gap at a sensible gap ? Or have you played with this ?

Yes I was running Iridium but was advised to use 'cheap' NGK with 32 thou gap. From whats being said I think I'll try another coil pack first incase that's the problem. Then go back to the dyno.

Try dropping the gap to between 28-24 thou - works with 'normal' plugs in blown engines running to load of rpm's - maybe a cheap fix?
