Cheers Steely, the one fitted at the moment far too uprated for the engine, something a bit more standard should do the trick.

Gear Leaver in the same hole / Place

If you can cut the gear leaver nut houseing from another gear box tail shalft houseing---- then cut a place in the tail houseing on the gear box your useing ---weld the Gear leaver nut in there ----((( Be good at you fitting))) and shorten the Rail shaft by welding a sutable 1/2 round on the side of your shalft ((( use a good ack rod )))---- Then you have the geal leaver well forward on the gear Box--- but in the same place in the Escort And will not have to cut a hole in the floor pan and or mess with your Hand Brake ----

and then fit the round M&F nut from a sport gear leaver or make one to sute (( they are 20 mm higher )) you can have a longer gear leave with out having to row it----- alike in the Sports Shifter---- all that may be less work and will look better---

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

Great tutorial, but I have one question...

I am currently fitting a pinto in my mk1 along with type 9 gearbox... I have everything I need (touch wood) except for the bolts which attach the gearbox to the bellhousing.

Does anyone know which bolts I need?

I had a quick search on the site, but couldn't find the answer!

    Cheers,

    Matt

They are metric, but can't remember what size. Probably ones that use a 17mm spanner, or possibly 19mm spanner.
Either way you can get them from B&Q.

does anyone know of a gear ratio/speed calculator thing on the net??? im going to be running an xe with a 2.0litre sierra t9 and a 3.09 atlas axle and am just a bit worried that the ratios will be a bit long and kill my engine a bit???

Bolts are M12 fine thread 1.5mm pitch - I think. don't know standard length as I used longer ones as i have a V6 box to xflow spacer, which were relatively hard to find.

what i've heard 4x4 box can be converted to 2wd just by changing the tailhousing and selector rail. 4x4 box has also speedogear missing on mainshaft

1st gear is the weakest point in the gearbox, simply because the ratio itself means the box has a few teeth only on the lay shaft,

just doing mine now, bolted the box onto the rs bellhousing, bought a set of new gearbox adaptor mounts from gs escorts along with a quickshift [very nice] and a speedo cable for £100 delivered, just bolting it in this weekbigest problem i had was the crutch, lotus flywheel cover,5 speed drive plate and a bare bearing that had to be pressed onto the old carrier [domed type].

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

I've read this a couple of times now and need something clarifying..........
On a x/flow to type 9, a pinto 190mm 23 spline clutch plate is needed and a x/flow pressure plate, I get the impression that you can't buy these as seperate items, therefore at least one complete clutch kit would have to bought and not all of the parts could be used.
I need to replace my pressure plate with a standard item as the one currently fitted feels like I'm pushing a 30kg weight to the floor but I can't buy this seperately........
    Am I correct

Not entirely, i have a nice clutch place near me who reline friction plates and make new kits and all the bits. They sell everything separate, and let me go through the catalogues to make sure i got the right bits

look up your local clutch refurbishers or whatever they are called and im sure it will be the same sort of place

GS escorts (follow the sponsors link) should have some 5speed to xflow plates, or try speed shack... pretty sure burtons do uprated ones.

i might have one in my box of bits.. not sure on the condition though but you can have it for nowt if it helps

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

First, Great thread, its been a big help . I'm haveing trouble with the prop. Its a two piece prop and it too long at the axle end. I've got the T9 bolted to a 1600 crossflow, i've offered it up with the engine crossmember bolted in, i've removed the gearbox mounts (going to reuse these) and cut the strengthener. The prop goes in the gearbox and bolts up on the mount no problems but is about 20mm to long at the axle. Thing is i bought the engine, box and prop complete from a fella who was running it in a mk2 escort. And the back axle is the same. I'm fitting it in a mk1. Any help appreciated.

Is the centre mount hole slotted if so is the bolt right at one end of the slot?
The 5sp is longer than the 4sp so if the bolt is at the end of the slot (should be roughly in the middle) that's why the back end is too far back

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

Right, time to end my confusion.................
I'm running a x/flow with a type 9, I want to change the clutch as it's takes a lot of effort to depress the pedal, not much fun when driving around town, it's either on or off.
To the best of my knowledge, this means the cover/pressure plate fitted to my car is an uprated one, therefore can be changed for another more standard item.
I purchased a new cover/pressure plate, a QH10000 which is supposed to fit a mk1 Mexico, it doesn't due to the PCD being approx 223mm and my flywheel is 250mm PCD.
Has my x/flow therefore been fitted with a pinto flywheel thus meaning that I need a pinto cover/pressure plate as the one removed from my car has 215mm dia friction surface?
All I want is a clutch that's nice and easy to operate, all help very much appreciated.

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

Xflow/type 9 driven plate is usually 190mm. (I just measured one that was on my desk )
I think this is the driven plate off a 1600 Pinto, the bigger one which you say you have is usually on a 2 litre Pinto.

    just a quick question...

Does anyone make a Converter mount/bracket so you can use the std g.box crossmember threads already on the shell so you dont have to drill holes in the floor and use the sierra crossmember?

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

I want to use a concentric clutch slave cylinder in my Type 9 to Zetec SE conversion. I know there are kits available from Burtons etc. but being a tight old bugga I would rather adapt a standard item. I bought a Vauxhall Corsa one from Ebay but it would not fit over the Type 9 input shaft ..
    Anyone suggest a suitable item?

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

I think the best is you drilled out the Gearbox bracket from the gearbox tunnel and wellded it on in the right position in the Gearbox tunnel. You can than used the Original Escort gearbox mount. See the pic.
