    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

    Hi there !

I see that here is everybody has experience with type9 gearboxes. I would like to know the input shaft's bearing number...i mean the numbers on that bearing witch is the firs bearing on the input shaft. It is a ball bearing with ring on its outer side. already found it on Ebay but it would be better to know the number.

    Thanks !

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

I just thought I would add where I buy my gearbox parts from

    http://www.transmission-rebuild-kits...-c-84_115.html

    http://www.bearingkits.co.uk/FORD-GE...20d8adaae84806

Also burton power sell the other little bits like the synchro blocker bars etc

    https://www.burtonpower.com/product_main.aspx?home.aspx

They sell all the parts you need, all of them can supply the longer front layshaft needles, which are 26mm long instead of 18.75mm long, the longer needles are actually used as the rear layshaft bearing for the 4 speed RS2000rocket/ type E gearbox, the only difference apart from the lenght is that the 4 speed uses 19 layshaft needles/rollers and the 5 speed type 9 uses 21 shorter needles, when making your order request 21 of the longer layshaft needles.

Buy a haynes book, to suit a 2.0 capri or similar, the older books are better as they have more detail.

So do you use the 1.6L sierra clutch plate with the original pressure plate or do you use the sierras pressure plate?

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

Thanks for that although thats a shame as mine has just died. It used to turn over slow the first time i started it everyday then it would turn over faster and faster. Then after 4-5 times of cranking it over it would run. The starter would also stick too and make a nasty noise when the engine did start. Any idea what this would be and could i strip it down to fix it.

I'm pretty sure that the 2ltr GBox input shaft is flush with the face of the bell housing , where as the V6 shaft sticks out a little bit (aprox 10-15 mm )

That's the easiest way to tell, the nose of the V6 input shaft sticks out about an inch.

I've got a T9 and a 4-speed from a 1600 x-flow. Can the endhousing from the 4-speed be used on the T9 so that I don't have to Movie the hole in the tunnel?

It won't make any difference - the gearbox is physically longer / stick in rearward position compared to the 4 speed, bell housing depths are essentially the same across the variants.

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

you can have the t9 tailhousing modified to bring the gearlever back into the standard position, it means splitting the rear housing from the box and having it ali welded and then shortening the shift rod.

i wish i had done this instead of cutting the strengthening arch in the tunnel. regrets, regrets regrets

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

But that means a lot of welding and messuring, right? Has to be a bigger job than moving the lever hole in the tunnel? Has anyone got templates for this sort of job?

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

not really a lot of measuring, all you need is the distance from the bellhousing face to the centre of the gearbox lever hole of the original box and then shorten the type 9 housing to give the same measurement. when you move the hole in the tunnel you also have to chop into the strengthening arch in the tunnel. i wish id left mine alone and had the gearbox modded instead.

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

    Hello and greets from Finland,

Had to register to be able to ask few questions concerning the assembly of the rear housing and fifth gear locking mechanism.

I have the post-1987 version tranny and the locking plate does not have the pin and spring parts under that plate.

    Now,

The tranny does not have fifth gear at all atm.
I have assembled the rear casing wrongly, because before removing the rear casing for welding few cracks, the fifth gear worked.

Could someone please tell me step by step how do I align parts inside the casing, so that the locking plate will be used correctly and the fifth gear will be engaged, when I select it from the gear stick.
I have the 32mb pdf file of the gearbox, but it does not tell me this procedure.

Advice would be very much appreciated!

    Thanks

    Great thread BTW!

    Cheers

    -Hessu-

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

    Hello all again,

The documentation is all good, but still these documents do not tell me the specific way to install and align the fifth gear interlocking sleeve and the locking plate.

    Help is still appreciated.

    Btw,

Does the axle, which goes to the clutch and flywheel just pull off, when I have removed the sleeve and bellhousing?

I have a second gearbox, which is fully operational atm. Just need to change the oil seals. But, it is for four cylinder inline engine. I could just swap the axle from the V6 version, which is missing the fifth gear and problem solved.

    NExt question.

Can someone tell me the OD and ID measurements of these oil seals? I have no access to the gearbox atm, but can visit a special shop, which sells all kinds of oil seals to automotive industry.

    Thanks

    Yes!

Fifth gear is fully working again!

The axle which moves the forks and fifth gear locking sleeve had a broken tap which is inside the locking sleeve. The sleeve moved freely and the missing tap caused the fifth gear not engaging at all.

Thank you all, who helped me out.

    Cheers

They are 4 speed aka rocket gearbox needle rollers, definitely worth buying as the std type 9 ones are much too short and will wear the lay shaft, not sure where to get them cheaper but search for 4 speed needles and you may find them for a good price

No reason why they would cost more for 4 speed, exact same needles

Good find, yes now I remember they are the same price for short or long needle rollers if you order them from that website

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

What kind of oil do you guys suggest for the gearbox?
I found the original oil, 23 quid for a liter feels a bit....expensive.
in "Taking the fifth" article the suggest Comma SX75W90, the GL4 one i assume.
Thats what i'm currently going for if anyone doesn't convince me otherwise.

Also, on the topic of longer layshaft needles, i emailed transmission-rebuild-kits.co.uk and supposedly they have them and the price is even better. 6,75 pounds for 25 pcs. Odd number, but at that price i will not complain.
Will see if they are the right ones when i eventually get them here, to the other far edge of Europe.

Castrol B373 LSD Oil, best oil as it can take very high loading but it is thin enough to work with LSD's, which also makes it suitable for gearboxes, as a bonus it is also cheap, works great
