    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

So got the stuff from the postal today and it seems that the needles that i got from transmission-rebuild-kits.co.uk will fit, i think.
Did some measurements with a micromiter and the new longer needles are at 3.36 mm a 0.01 mm thicker than the old ones, no problem with that. However adding up the two washers (3.19 mm each) and the long needle (25.9 mm) the overall length is 32.28 mm, opposed to the std solution 4 washers and short needles (18.8 mm) 31.6 mm. So the new bearing is 0.68 mm longer.
It will probably be fine, i will find out as soon as i get to the gearbox assembly.

    Oil seal measurements:
    Speedodrive ....metric 8 - 16 - 7
    Input shaft ....metric 28 - 40 - 7
Prop shaft .....imperial 1.375 - 1.953 - 0.500 TZY (this one is a bit special, since it has to seal both ways)

And for oil i still went for the Comma SX 75W90 GL4 , never seen or used a totally transparent oil before, at least not on the car

The reason why i went with this oil and not the castrol one is the GL rating. The higher GL rating provides more strength thanks to the higher quantity of nasty sulfur additives. But the same additives eat away yellow metals eg brass syncro rings.
I'm no expert at oil chemistry, it's just what i read on the internet, written by people that i would like to think know what they are saying.
I will be driving the car maybe 2-3000 km a year and aldough the oil was dirt cheap, i'm not planning to change the oil for at least 3 years, since it involves removing the gearbox from the car.

I've got a type 9 with tranx clubman kit and it has recently started jumping out of 5th gear under power. Any ideas how to resolve? Is it just a weak detent spring?

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

Could be badly worn synchro gears/splines on the side of the gear or worn/broken blocker bar springs but if it only does this under power it sounds like worn synchro on the gear itself, best to take it out and have a look, 5th is easily replaced if you can get some spares from quaife or Dan @ 3J driveline

Thanks both. At least it won't be a total strip down then.

I've got a standard T9 that's started jumping out of 4th gear on the overrun, what's it likely to be?

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

What gear oil should I put in a Type 9 with a Tran-X straight cut gear kit. The box has been out of the car and drained of oil for lots of years now. I opened it up a few months ago to find it looks like it's stated to go rusty, but when I say rusty I just mean a slight tinge of red really, nothing serious.

And I also fancied some sort of bung to put on the input shaft to stop the oil coming out again. I know I could just tip it forwards a bit but I wondered if there is any sort of transportation plug?

    Thanks Graham.

Yea, I'm a silly arse, of course I meant output shaft... I know what I meant... Thanks.. I seem to remember seeing some sort of plastic spline protector type thingy somewhere.

    Re: Type 9 gearbox tutorial

Can you push apart the chassis mounts with a jack when using the alloy type 9 blocks (pinto) I have tried putting the type 9 in tonight and the top cover of the gearbox is hitting the chassis mounts and won’t go into the tunnel. I have read a reply somewhere saying only the top of the mounts need pressing but it doesn’t go past the bottom of them. I am worried that the alloy mounts won’t line up as they’re meant to if I get the jack on them.

    Thanks
    Kris

    Hi Kevin
I know it's going back a while but I just found your pics of the adapted Type 9 tail-housing. Looks fantastic as i don't want to muck up my NOS carpet. Would you still have any pics of that mod? Any close-ups or detail I could 'borrow'? Did the mod make any difference to the gearchange etc or did you find it all ok? presumably the shifting would be shorter.
    Thanks in advance
    Andy

    Hi Andy,

Have a look at http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthre...=1#post3367400 for one I did a few years ago

Gearchange will be the same as normal as the pivot point on the gearstick is the same - shortening the selector shaft does not make any difference

    Thanks

    Morning Gavin,

Thanks for that information/link, perfect for all sorts of reasons. How did you get at the selector rod and calculate the cut-off?
Do you still have the bracket you made and would you loan it out if I paid recorded courier both ways? I'm in Kettering, Northants.

Apologies if this appears twice, or somewhere it shouldn't, I'm new on here and tried to reply already so who knows where it went !!!!????

    All the best

    Andy

    Hi,

Yes I've got the bracket and you're welcome to borrow it
The holes are drilled to move the gear lever 76mm / 3" forwards, so the hole in the selector shaft needs to be redrilled 76mm further forwards then the end can be cut off at a suitable point (this doesn't have to be as accurate)

Do you know how to remove the tailhousing and the selector shaft?

I'll send you a PM with my email address

    Thanks
    Gavin
