The rear panel support has been removed from the new rear panel

And the support from the donor car cut out - to be fitted onto the new rear panel

The original bracket is a much better job than the one from the pattern part - it has tabs to secure it to the boot floor - which were missing from the pattern part.

    Dash Replacement

The old dash has been removed from the shell

And the replacement dash from the donor has also been removed

The replacement dash is now off to be media blasted - and then needs a small repair before fitting.

You are going to end up with a lovely straight car me thinks! That is a nice jig/table that he is using. Definitely worth a go if I do another Escort although not sure where all the datum points come from given these cars had tolerences in inches!

Work continued on the replacement dash

The drivers side A pillar is slightly in the wrong position so a porta power is used to 'push it to the correct place.

With adjustments made the replacement dash is test fitted

    Drivers Side A-pillar repair

The A-pillar is made up of three parts.

Inner Door Jamb - number 5

Door Hinge Panel - number 3

These panels sandwich the A pillar (number 9) which has the door hinges and door check strap attached to it.

Because of previous repairs the inner panel is pretty knackered - this panel is not available to buy - so a new one is fabricated.

The pictures don't do it justice - it really is worse in real life.

If I had a limitless budget it may have been saved but I don't see the sense in throwing 30K at a 20K car !!

This car has already cost more than I had hoped!!

    Re: Escort Mk1

Due to previous accident the original A pillar was not quite square.

This was highlighted by the jig.

Not only were the door hinges in the wrong place but the gap between the jig and the top and bottom hinges were different.

    Test Fitting the Doors

As both a-pillars have been repaired, the hinges will have moved, so before going any further best make sure the doors sit/close properly.

The media blasting has shown up a few problems with the rear panel and tubs which will need sorting.

The water gully behind the grills in the rear flitch plate also needs work.

I don't know, but mine has them too:

    P1050258-.JPG

I guess they're part of the standard panel pressing. They do look vaguely speaker-hole-ish, but I can't imagine rear speakers would ever have been something Ford would have had the foresight to make space for in the mk1.

I thought the square holes are just part of panel design but the centre hole - I thought early 70's no stereo only mono radio so only one hole needed....maybe?

These panels haven't been welded in place as its been noticed that the replacement magnum inner wing panels have some problems.

This is an original ford inner wing - note the 90 degree angle on the wing mounting band.

    Re: Escort Mk1

Now compare that with the new inner wing panels -

Unless sorted the wings will not sit properly on the mounting band and any errors will be really noticeable at the shut lines.
