I have mk1 that had a speaker mounted in that rear centre parcelshelf hole. Seemed like a factory fitted item.
    It's a german made 1974 1300l.

    Great thread btw!

    Re: Escort Mk1

A fair amount of work has gone into ensuring the wings sit correctly on the car.

Firstly the inner wing mounting rails were at the wrong angle - these were 'tapped' into the correct position.

The self tapping screws are used to hold the wing in position as 'adjustments' are made. These will be removed once the wing is welded into its final position.

    Re: Escort Mk1

Then between the inner wing rail and front of the car sits the Wing Filler Flitch panel.

This made the wing sit proud - so some work was need to ensure it all fitted correctly.

Some work was also needed where the wing meets with the front panel.

It was the same on both sides

    Re: Escort Mk1

There is a slight bulge on one of the wings that needs sorting

The time spent ensuring all the panels fit correctly was well spent - as the gaps between the bonnet, doors etc. are fairly consistence - with only minor adjustments now needed

Now that we're happy with the panel alignments and gap lines time to start the mammoth task of welding all the panels in place.

Firstly boot Floor and rear turrets welded in position.

The media blasting also uncovered a few problems with the rear corner which needed repairing.

Some small patches were used to fill the holes

Discovered another problem with the pattern part rear panel.

The rear bumper brackets mounting points will need some work to line up correctly.

Luckily we have an another Escort that we can use to ensure that we are placing the brackets in the correct place, so definitely a pattern part problem.

    Rear Arches

Before the rear arches can be tackled a large amount of filler needs to be removed from the rear quarters.

All the filler has masked another previous poor repair.

The old replacement arch is removed.

    The new arches offered up.

Looks good.......except the previous repair has been bodged. There now isn't enough metal to attach the new arch too.

The Magnum repair arch is only 4 inches wide - which isn't wide enough - Luckily the ex-press steel panels replacement is 6 inches wide.

    Rear Arches

The Magnum Rear Arch repair panel isn't wide enough because of a previous repair to the rear arch.

Luckily the Ex-pressed Steel arch is a few inches wider, these were ordered and arrived today.

    Re: Escort Mk1

What was really surprising was the difference in quality of the arches.

The ex-pressed steel arch is thicker

    This is the Magnum Arch

And the ex-pressed arch itself is more defined - possibly hand finished as opposed too just punched out of a press.

The only down side is they are 3-4 times the price of the Magnum equivalent panel, but well worth it IMHO.

The rear arches need a fair amount of work - mainly because of a previous bad repair to both arches.
