    Fuel Pump Flowing Unresticted

The set up i have on the van is like this, using the original tank i've built a swirl pot inside. Both pumps are inside the tank, submerged in fuel.

Basically the lift pump is just a normal fuel pump pumping fuel into the swirl pot. But it's flowing unrestricted, no back pressure, at the moment and excess fuel flows back into the main tank when the swirl pot is full.

Problem is, i was on the motorway the other day and the (secondhand) lift pump (normal fuel pump) shit it's pants and died so no fuel was in the swirl pot and we were stranded.

Question is, has it shit it's pants because it's not building up any pressure? I would have thought it would have an easier time if there was no back pressure. I've fitted another pump at the moment, but don't want it to eat pumps. Should i put a restriction in the pipe so that it's forced to be under pressure all the time? What size restriction would you recommend?

Or is it just coincidence? And a shit secondhand pump?

You could well be right, the motor in the pump could have worn prematurely due to over speeding the motor which would happen in a no load situation

tbh i think you were just unlucky, on race cars ive run high pressure injection pumps that feed swirl pots, no restriction other than the pot itself

    Fuel Pump Flowing Unresticted

I always thought they needed restricting ?
Use a smaller hose into swirl pot to make it work ?

theres a fair chance what cause the pump to fail was tiny bits of weld/solder left behind by the remodelling of the tank, been there done that got the shirt............

I killed/blocked a pump too when i didn't use a pre pump filter too. There was loads of ally swarf building up from when i installed the new tank. It took 1 1/2 to do it but it ruined the pump in the end. Now i run a filter before and after and check the filter to the pump regularly.

Both pumps run filters and i did clean out the tank pretty well before i put it all back together.

Anyway, it seems to be fine at the moment... Touch wood.

It looks like these Japanese (Toyota 2JZ and Nissan RB26) fuel pumps don't like to run without a load. That's the second pump that's blown now. I've got a standard FRP from an old engine that i'm going to fit in-line when i get a new pump next week
