Looks kinda busy in there but the tank sits above the rear axle which makes the weight distribution quite nice
I think back in the day there was a shortage of fuel which prompted Ford to use the bigger tanks but now we don't have that problem any more. We also have Escorts with the smaller tanks like you guys have but they were more for 1.3 etc.

Re: Petrol Tank - Do you know what its from ?

surely thats got to be a very inefficient way of filling a tank? from the bottom up ? also causing it to run up to the filler cap on cornering ?

unless of course the pipe rises inside the tank itself

Re: Petrol Tank - Do you know what its from ?

Banishit, now that you've mentioned it, it is rather an odd way

We work in African time, so spending 20minutes filling tank is no concern to us. Only to chuck it all out the filler neck at the first bend

Yes they do dump petrol if the fuel cap seal's screwed.

Clint will post some pics 2morrow...

If you are looking for something similar, My Audi 90 Quattro had a tank upright behind the seats, very neat breather set up and already set up for injection, should fit an Escort

Re: Petrol Tank - Do you know what its from ?

The filler neck running to the bottom is the best design, in SA the heat and flash fires could cause a problem so splashing the fuel into the tank causing lots of petrol fumes is a really bad idea, so by filling from under liquid level stops the splashing.

Normal Escort Tanks will throw fuel if the filler seal is screwed.

The point of this is that its a standard fitment tank and therefore is FIA legal.

Banishit, I think only the Sport and later model escorts, 1981 being the last year of manufacturing had them fitted.

Clint, sorry for not getting the pics up yet, being getting home late, and my shed does'nt have lights in it, so I'll hall them out in the morning and snap them.

Re: Petrol Tank - Do you know what its from ?

Sorry to drag an old thread up but thought I would add this to the discussion. My SA built MK2 Escort was built in 79 and has the long range fuel tank in. Its a 1.3L

Re: Petrol Tank - Do you know what its from ?

hi all, im brand new here and have been looking for some info on this fuel tank for ages, so sorry to drag up an old thread. lol.
I bought a tank the same as this for my mk2 escort a while back but never fitted it as i was a little concerned about fuel starvation due to fuel slosh if the tank isn't real full??? Can anyone who's had experience of one of these tanks let me know if it's an issue or not please? My car is running a pretty much standard twin choke carb and original pump, used for "enthusiastic" road driving and the odd track day.
    Thanks very much

Re: Petrol Tank - Do you know what its from ?

shouldn't matter with carbs, the fuel in the float bowl will keep the engine running if the intake gets uncovered and then fill up again when the fuels back, loads of carbed cars have wide flat tanks with no baffles, injection engines suffer more because they lose fuel pressure when the pump sucks air and have no "reserve" in a float bowl like a carb does.

MK2 Escort 1600 Sport. Very crappy tank. I have one so i know about it. Not able to drive with a full tank of fuel without it splashing out the filler. Anyone know of any fixes for this?

Maybe a SA variant but that is not a 'normal' Escort tank - our's sit in the offside wheel well - and don't leak on corners LOL!
