    strut tops

    hi im in the process of repairing my inner wings on my escort and was wondering if it was worth converting to large hole strut tops while im there or is there no benefit over having the small hole ones? whats your thoughts people? :-)

    There's no benefit really just keep them original

    There's an advantage if you want to fit original spec rubber roller bearing top mounts. You can buy aluminium small hole ones but you can't buy rubber ones in small hole size. If I change the inner wings on my car I'll be converting so that I can use rubber RBTM's.
    Just gives more choice (at the expense of originality!)

    im guessing the rubber roller bearing top mounts give a more road friendly ride?

    They do give a more friendly ride but they are also suitable for heavy duty/harder/faster driving conditions as they were originally spec'd on mk1 escorts RS2000's for use with their Group1 Bilstein suspension legs.

    Defo go to larger holes there is loads more choice in top mounts I made mine bigger with a hole saw lol took bloody ages so I could fit roller bearing top mounts and very glad I did has made a really noticeable difference to the steering a lot lighter and free to move get it done it just makes sense ha ha ha

    Original RBTM's used a roller bearing. This made the steering lighter than standard hence their use for the top end/competition cars. The rubber part provides some level of shock absorbsion which helps the shell. Even the standard type of top mount incorporates a rubber part for this reason. Alloy ones have been known to provide a harsher ride and even break due to the lack of any shock absorbing rubber.
    There are two versions of the original style RBTM now, the OEM with roller bearing or a new version with a spherical bearing. This new one is capable of taking higher angles of caster/camber BUT will not improve how light the steering feels!

    BUT will not improve how light the steering feels!

    I make this statement based on the advert on RIX Engineering's web site:

    Also, rallydesigns website:

A faithful copy of the original taper roller bearing top mount able to accept high axial load, but also with low steering effort.
