Hi guys, im thinking of putting in some harnesses in my mk2 road car but what ones should I go for, 3 point or 4 point and where would I bolt them to?

Personally I think they're a pain in the ass in a road car unless you like not being able to reach anything lol...otherwise buy the harness plates and drill floor where required and I think the rear straps have to be within a certain angle to be more effective ie more horizontal than vertical.

Oh and I bought some 3 point inertia type ones as a compromise as I couldn't use the standard belts due to buckets fouling and didn't want the standard restrictive type harnesses so best of both worlds.

Re: Harnesses in a road car

I used full harness eye bolts to hold the existing belts on to the sill and tunnel thus keeping the original belts as well. Then drilled the floor return between the rear seat back and squab and used FIA spec square plates to hold the rear of the full harness (4 point in my case). Be very careful measuring up though, get them too low and the squab won't refit and one hole comes out very near the centre exhaust mount, my plate is actually underneath it.

Re: Harnesses in a road car

I had full harnesses in both of my track cars (XR4x4 and the Escort when I first got used it - both road legal and used when I had a very short commute to work) - and to echo those comments above, they're a pain in the arse if you have to reach or turn, as well as making you look like a prat in the car park when you get in or out!

I've taken them out of the Escort and will be fitting new inertia reels in the front again.

Re: Harnesses in a road car

I remember drilling the rear floor on passenger side for my rear harness mount and after the drill bit went thru the floor it suddenly hit something else, yes the centre exhaust hanger bracket...amazingly it was exactly centred within the exhaust bracket allowing the harness bolt plate to fit snugly inside...what are the chances?

Re: Harnesses in a road car

To repeat whats already been said, full harness are a complete pain in the arse in a road car!
But if you want the look, (which i understand, they do look cool!), or you want them for track days, fit both - normal inertia reel belts and some 4-pointers, people wont even notice the inertia belts if you have harness fitted. I had planned to do that in my last car but sold it before i got around to it.

Inertia reels can be got new for very little money if you shop around, and all the mounting holes are there already...!
