what's best brake kit for escort?

at the moment i got 310mm discs on alloy bells with wilwood superlite callipers
but i'm not happy with them
because the pads knock around making noise
    and one side keeps warping
and they get hot melting all the grease out of the hubs

    what alternatives are there??

what i would like is some alloy 4-pots like brembos or something
that are road callipers with dust seals
e.g. focus RS callipers or similar
and i want 285 to 310mm discs, preferably without bells that mount on the front of the hub face putting the heat into the wheel

or even single pot sliding callipers so long as the dics is huge and they pull up well

i know at least one person has AP's but where do i get the kit?

    i haven't seen anyone doing a kit

Re: what's best brake kit for escort?

scrote,i had aps now have the same disc and bell as your on but with the six pot caliper,it has bigger pad area and doesnt boil the fluid so its getting rid of the heat better,i use castol high temp grease, but on trackdays i find it still leaks,if your going to use them hard youll find the dust seals melt and perish, better without and do more maintance

Re: what's best brake kit for escort?

They used to be fine on mine but one disc was warped when measuring with a dial gauge mounted on the strut
so i had the bell trued and then the disc, but it has done it again
probably my fault as i have never rebuilt the callipers

Re: what's best brake kit for escort?

Ive had wilwood and Hi spec and was never happy with either of them.
Im running 310mm discs from Clint which are from an M3 and im using CP5200 calipers with Red stuff pads, only cos they come with the calipers
All i had to have made up was the alloy brackets for the calipers to be mounted,hi spec done these for me for £100. Not sure who else could make them though.
They are the best kit ive put on my car,in my opinion of course
My brother runs Wilwood's with brooved and drilled discs and his have been fine and work really well on his car.

Re: what's best brake kit for escort?

Kev your set-up sounds like exactly what i'm after
don't suppose you got any pics?
are the discs one piece then? that sit between the hub and wheel
Did Hi-spec need the bits or do you think i can ring them and they'll know what size to make it?
So what did clint just re-drill the M3 discs to suit ford pattern?
sorry for so many questions but i like the sound of this one

Re: what's best brake kit for escort?

They are a two piece disc,Clint cut the centers out of the M3 disc and used a flat alloy bell. I had some brackets already that were for a 335mm kit my mate had on his orange mk2. So i took those brackets to hi spec and said i wanted everything the same but to fit a 310mm disc. They done a nice job and all within a week Yes a week lol
Ive got a couple of pics of the calipers, and the old brackets. And the kit on the car.

Re: what's best brake kit for escort?

Ickys are 315mm apparently, dont know how HT's got them in a 15" wheel. I had to move my stick on wheel weights from the inside of the wheel cos the caliper was hitting them. Had to have bang on weights on the inside.

Re: what's best brake kit for escort?

Can you guys please tell me why you have 4 spotters and 6 spotters on ya cars?...do you race the car on weekends?
are you pulling 250kw at the rears?

I am getting excited about putting vented capri disks with M16 caliper and you guys got enough brake power to stop a bus.

seriously though is anyone using these brakes on the street?

surely if you use them on the street you are not getting anywhere near their full potential, it would seem some what over kill to get a really nice caliper and hi temp disk, then use street pads.

hmmm...may be you guys have all been down the vented M16 and are passed that stage.

please let me know why you have this set up

For a lot its a case of .... My toys are bigger than your toys..

For the rest its because they do high speed runs and trackdays, the big vents on the big discs help to avoid fade... some of these cars have to stop from 170mph

Re: what's best brake kit for escort?

well for me, i know i overheated my 310mm's at the nurburgring, they were smoking when i had to pull in half way round (before the big climb which cools them off) and that was on metallic pads
and as you can see in my sig i have done 165.7 proven at bruntingthorpe, next time if i can use the gas and with my other mods i hope to see 175mph so i ain't taking no chances

a little birdie on here tells me somebody else is aiming for 200mph with their new build

plus i don't drink or smoke so what better to spend money on than top brakes

and yes most of us do trackdays with the cars, although my kit was supplied by a rally equipment place, i doubt many rally cars with mk2/capri front struts see approx 383bhp/392lbft and the people in the pics above are kicking out more than that, 250Kw is around 335bhp?

Also, in a lightweight escort, if you fit a rear disc kit (for less weight and easier maintenance- not looks honest) then you need huge fronts to keep the bias correct

    cheers

Re: what's best brake kit for escort?

allthough i suspect some of it is a case of blig bling and bigger is supposed to be better,

cars that are road and track do tend to need bigger brakes than pure track cars because pure race cars can use hard pads which will handle vast amounts of heat, but these pads will not stop a car when cold, so these huge brake conversions do allow lots of heat to be handled with softer pads that will work when cold

Re: what's best brake kit for escort?

well i suppose of you are hitting those speads than danm you will need the brakes to suit.
how is the escort at 170km/hr?...is it unsettled or does it really get calmer?

i know when my friend and I were doing 240km/hr in his R33 GTS-T it was really settled and just glided... (he was pumping out 320kw at the wheels, which i think equates to 375kw at the engine).

but he did extensive suspension mods and had some realy good rubber on his car.

but from 160km/hr to 210km/hr it was really shakey.

(he sold his car for the same price he bought oot for 2 years after doing all that work to it, he spent over $30,000 on engine mods and suspenion...what a waste).

but that brings me to my next question, do you drive your car on the street and do you change pads from track to street usage?

Im using much smaller brakes than that and pulling up from around 100mph 3 times a lap. 9" Drums on back.

It should take less than 30 mins to change pads, can u not afford another set.

As for pad noise/squeel/dirtywheels/metal from pads leaving rust marks on paint ....get over it !

bit like you roger, i'm using a std rear brake set up and only 300mm front brakes to stop 460bhp in 945kgs, which at some circuits means braking from over 150mph once and several times from well over 100mph per lap

    Graham,

    What pads u using. ?

    Currently DS3000, here,
U could almost use these on the road i recon.

Gave ebc reds a go but, bit ordinary and wore pretty quick.

    Also.........
At some stage, some mulitiple degassing slots, will be needed, especially to get these "dinner Plates", u guys love up to temperature, with harder pads.

    also, i got a tip from phil @ r.a.c.e.
to stop the pads clonking when coming on and off the brakes, spread a thin film of silicone sealer over the ends of the pads
    gonna give that a try

Hey scrote now I'm a bit curious, did you order a complete kit with brackets, that would bolt on straight to your struts, and be centralized over your disc?

What struts are you using, and finally how much did the kit set you back?

Yes i ordered the complete kit which included calipers discs bells brackets pads and hoses
    it bolted up perfectly
unlike the wilwoood kit which needed use of spacer washers

this one is a work of art
    total cost £1260
struts are rs2000 mk2 but same kit should fit any escort strut

fitted them friday night and all the juddering from my front was stopped dead so it wasn't the hubs at fault

went on the track all weekend and now the discs are all discoloured with blue heat marks in various spots around the surface, hopefully some normal road driving will put them normal

Re: what's best brake kit for escort?

sounds like it was straight forward then. Glad to hear that you have had time to get out and test them already, and regarding the blue heat marks, I guess you REALLY tested them. And I'm no expert, but If the disc have been heated up a lot, wouldn't that be bad? Change the structure of the metal, warp the disc, etc. Do think the kit you have bought should be able to handle it, but was just wondering.

    BTW what's R.A.C.E. ?

How about these then? Fitted these on the Mk2 racecar yesterday
Got them as brand new bells and brackets with 2nd hand calipers and rotors (albeit never ever used!)

They are 335 x 32mm rotors and Hi Spec Monster 6 pot calipers

Came with Mintex 1144 pads but once these are worn down we are trying DS3000's which are pure race pads and a fair bit more aggressive (ie they eat discs )

they will fit over a minimum of a group A or split rim 16" wheel ( or nomal 17" wheel) but with 310 - 315mm rotors 15's should go on

This is what I was going to do but as the stuff I bought already had 335mm rotors and my main set of wheels are image 16's I just decided to bite the bullet and sell my other set of 15" wheels
