    Transit misfire

Hi all, mate of mine has recently bought an L reg Transit. It's a petrol 2.0 Pinto with the Efi. Goes great but we recently went to Wales in it and it started to misfire after an hour or so on the M4. It cruises fine at 70 with just a whiff of throttle but will then start to misfire and start chugging. Only way to get anywhere is to throttle off and then put your foot to the floor and lift off, it will then be OK for a while. The temp seems to creep up a bit while it's doing it too. We did pull over in some services to check it over but couldn't see anything obvious. At first I thought it could be the throttle pot but this seems ok on a multimeter. It has got the EGR system and I was reading up that this only works at part throttle and cuts off at idle and full throttle so could it be causing the problem? This would make sense as a stab of full throttle makes it clear for a while. Also, when we pulled out of the services it stopped doing it and was fine the rest of the journey. any ideas?
    Thanks

It would be nice to junk the EGR but I don't think it's that simple. there's metal pipes coming up off the exhaust manifold and it all links back into the airbox. There's also quite a few vacuum pipes and a small black module that they go into. The module presumably feeds back to the ECU as it has a wiring connector too.

Could it be disconected somehow and would there be any side effects? Was the same system used on later Sierras?
