    FBY 974J Duratec install.

Right o the shows are pretty much over and summer is a distant memory.
Time to tear the escort apart again

I've had the x flow in my escort since i first built it 14 years ago its been over hauled a couple of times but never needed much and has always been reliable and fun
Hope i'm doing the right thing

Anyway i've sold the x flow so no going back now.

Everything was going fine till the "help" turned up

And the best bit of the day...........taking this poxy thing of my car(which was as difficult as it was to fitpercy: )

    Such good quality

    Engine out.......

    And gearbox out...................

Quite a bit of room really not sure if i'm gonna do the bulk head mods or just see if it fits without.
Think a trial placement is needed

    mmmmmm................

Do i prod it with a screwdriver or just pretend i havn't seen it

Anyway had a measure up with the duratec and its about 23" from top to bottom

Measured my x flow and from the sump cut out to the top of the carb linkage is about 22"
So hopefully i can drop the x member an inch and it will fit or preferably i'll get dom to modify the dry sump for me and i can gain just over an inch there
Just hope that the drive line is low enough if not its of to garys for a bit of tunnel fettleling
We'll see when i try it in there.
And i cant wait to hear these little babies..................

    RRROOOOOAAAAARRRRRRR

Anyhows thats it for today might have a poke with a screw driver tomorrow night
    Then again might not

Just one more thing, found these behind my grill..............

Dont no where they came from
(dont think there going back on )

Great start Matt, think you might need to fettle the bulkhead a little, even if you just remove the middle of the gutter (which normally removes a load of rot at the same time).
The tunnel will need changing though if its standard or any clutch changes etc will be a complete nightmare, plus I think the duratec wont go in easily or nicely without a bigger tunnel

Is that a Duretec in the pics, or is that just some random tractor engine pic?
    It looks bloody massive!
And you know you have just GOT to poke things with a screwdriver.
(I expect you already have by now)
Good luck with it all mate, and keep us posted.

LOL beat me to it, I think the 2.3 just has a taller block, the cam covers should be interchangable. This one might be from Dunnell or Raceline

    Re: FBY 974J Duratec install.

You wont need to mod the tunnel at all, as your using the same box it wont make any difference, the engine will probably sit sligtly further foward anyway

Some good progress there Matt, keep going and you'll be done in no time

Shame about the screwdriver holes!!! A completly novice and probably stupid idea (and no doubt one that's crossed your mind before as well) Can't you cut out the affected area on the inner wings and simply replace with some sheet metal Seems too simple to be do-able lol As for the top of the wings...can't help!

    Keep it up mate

    Re: FBY 974J Duratec install.

Yeah i can plate the inner wings up alright even though the rot goes up behind the top plate.
As for the drip rails i might attack it with a wire brush in a drill and then rust treat it, seam seal it and arch it when the wings rot through in a couple of years

    Re: FBY 974J Duratec install.

    Hi

The 2.3 Duratec in the Gp4 Mk2 is mine.
All the parts are Raceline sourced.
A 2.3l Duratec is 11mm taller in the block (only) when compared to the 2.0l.
I have just got my engine back from the builders after a full rebuild, see "A big thanks to Mogsmex" post.
    Good luck with your project.

    John

    Re: FBY 974J Duratec install.

My advice Matt, and believe it or not I go out of my way to avoid more work.
Take the wings off, fix the drip rails (and anything else you find) and fit fibreglass wings.
As long as you take your time with the wings they are very saleable, and for good money. I wouldn't be surprised if they paid for the fibreglass ones. The fibreglass ones can be removed and sold later too.
I don't know what arches you have planned, but there is always the option of doing the fronts in fibreglass then, too.
You have got to do the inner wing anyway, you can't put your new engine in a rotten bay. You could easy do both strut tops in one day. I think I did one in an evening. If I can, I'm sure you can.

Or just cover it with seam sealer and pretend you didn't see it.
Another quick fix is to silicone a piece of biscuit tin over it.

    Re: FBY 974J Duratec install.

Do it proper mate. Take the wings off weld the inners. The wings look savable to me its only the mountin lip thats rotted. that engine will rip your car apart if you dont do it. Dont fit fiber glass wings as the wing are part of the strength of the car, only bolt on pannels should be fiber glass.
OR you could go the hole hog and space frame the front end and fit fiber glass wings and bonnet to a metel front pannel have a flip front, very cool! Keep up the good work.

if it was me if would be fancying a roll cage since you are putting a beast under the bonnet and follow it through the fire wall to be semi space framed that way you will not have the hastle your having now with the inner wings , ever again if you seal/treat the metal right. a fair bit of work i know but that just me being a stupid perfectionist again!

mines a comfy road car matt , too nice and shiney too for chucking at gravel traps . You can all race it off the traffic lights or up the drag strip though and i'll have skinney 175 street tyres , steel panels , glass windows , carpets , heavy recaros etc so that you can have a chance . i'll build a 300 4 door for motorsport afterwards with my vauxhall XE engine that i can't sell for love nor money !!!!!!

Its all going a bit off topic .. but you can sprint any car you like.. But in the OFSC you need to have a least started with a Ford built before 1981.
But yes Gaz you can register with the organising club and come and join us with your Porsche.. but your Escort would be far better, as you have a chance of winning the class.. you would loose out to the dedicated Porsche sprint cars ('cos they have thrown out the flat 6's for Pinto's )

    Re: FBY 974J Duratec install.

    Right back to the build.
Picked the gearbox up from my workshop at the weekend and i'm gonna put this back up under the car.
No it fits coz it was a t9 that came out

I'm going to see how the standard t9 goes i'm not looking at a lot of horse power and i'm sticking with 175's so we'll seepopcorn:

If it breaks i'll get a gear set for the t9 so the install is still the same

Pick the engine up tomorrow night and i think a couple of friends might be about at the weekend to have a trial fitpray:

And now to lay to sleep another duratec myth.
"The exhaust manifold will cost you at least 500"

Well this is a standard mondeo manifold and it dont look to bad to me
I have been told that the primarys may be a bit short but it will do for a start. And if they do hold it back then i'll make em longer
And for alot less than 500.

And gaz this is going in the green one and the other shell is going balls out race car and yes i'm gonna be a trailor queen

P.s CHICKEN get ya name down or are you scared richards gonna woop ya

matt don't put too many standard bits back on it or it will be back to 140 bhp again !!! . Richard can race my car on any street or drag strip he likes , i'll use a shitty cheap 4 door for track days though , my paints too nice ..........

Think it might be a bit dangerous to race on the street with the power we have. I'll give you a run for your money at the pod if you come do some proper racing with corners as well

You might as well trade in your Escort for a muscle car with auto box if all you want to do is traffic light GP and the pod

    Re: FBY 974J Duratec install.

    Matt

I hate to burst the bubble on your enthusiasm to install a Duratec in your Mk1. But exhaust manifold tuning on N/A engines is a must for performance. As you say the Mondeo manifold did not cost much, but it will not give you much when compared to one with optimised primary and secondary runner lengths. The Mondeo manifold has no tuning at all it has equal runner lengths for good AFR distribution to the catalyst and to make it fit under the bonnet of a Mondeo. If you go ahead and fit the manifold these are the compromises on performance you will have.

The torque curve shape and the power turn over point will be questionable.

There will be EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) back flow into the combustion chamber because the primary runners are too short and the exhaust gas pressure wave will pulse backwards up the primary runner instead of dieing out as it travels down the runner. This is the first principle of exhaust tuning.

This will cause the combustion chamber to become hot and will cause detonation to start earlier than expected.

To stop detonation the spark advance will have to be retarded.

With large mounts of spark retard the exhaust gas temperatures will rise, which will cause damage to the valves and high under bonnet temperatures.

To cool down the exhaust gas over fuelling will be needed.

This all leads to a big drop in performance and why I paid 500 for my manifold so that I can confidently run at MBT spark advance and 12.5:1 AFR for optimum performance.

Sorry if this sounds like a lecture but I tune (calibrate) engines on dyno, in cars on rolling road and test track for Ford as a job and these problems are a very day occurrence for me.

If you PM me I will let you have the dimensions of my manifold and you can get one made a lot cheaper than where I bought my one.

    John

After watching similar cars with either Duratec or Pinto Engines racing against eachother on SKYand seeing the number of Duratecs that were in FRONT of the Pintos, I very much doubt they are shit. Still makes a change from the Pinto/ Zetec debates of recent months

    Re: FBY 974J Duratec install.

i meant the standard manifold is shit not the engine ( though the engine is overhyped for sure so that the big boy tuning company's can pull the pants down of the money no object track day tossers in their westfields and charge them 5000+ for a standard engine with a set of throttle bodies !!!!!!!!! )
