    Capri 302 V8

Brief description: 2.8i body, Edelbrock alluminium heads, cam and intake, roller rockers, I beam rods, Holley eyc. Tremec TR 3550 Manual 5 speed, LSD, Cosworth discs allround, Brooklands trim etc. Did 152 mph at Bruntingthorpe and has since then done a 12.7 at Shakespeare.
Handles well as engine is same weight as the V6 due to the alluminium parts. Good all rounder, track days, Drags, shows or driving 4 up with a boot of luggage!

Engine shot as requested. Apart from making room for the bigger rad there is no cutting. There is more room in there than in my old '66 Mustang! The weight is well back and no more than the V6 that came out. This engine is around 325 BHP but much more is easily attainable relatively cheaply.

Have a look at C.R.A.P (CAPRI RACE AND PERFORMANCE CONVERSIONS) He charges a lot to do the conversion but does sell the parts seperately. To get the engine in is simple enough, engine mounts and gearbox crossmember. Modified headers, custom prop and a bigger rad, standard atlas is strong enough unless you over tire or use slicks. I did a 1.92 60 ft time and it's OK. To get the engine and box in to my spec allow £8000 but a standard 289/302 and 4 speed you could probably do for £2500 ish plus brakes and suspension upgrades! I didn't say it was cheap!
If anybody is seriously considering this swap they can come and have a look at my car.

    Re: Capri 302 V8

    Hey, nice Car!

I'm just about to put a 5.0 HO into my '83 Capri, including the T-5 manual transmission an the 8.8' Axle.
But when I see the huge engine an the big bell housing of the T-5, I'm a bit frightened, that it won't fit into the tunnel.
Furthermore I have in mind, that the breakcylinder has to be mounted in an other position, because of the V8's bigger valvecovers.
You didn't have any probs with that?

    Regards, Daniel

The rocker covers I have at the moment have an oil filler on both and the one on the brake servo side gets a bit close so will change them.

Did you get your heads from Real Steel ?
I'm thinking of getting a set for my 302 for the weight saving as well as performance.
What spec cam do you run and what are the idle emisions like for the MOT?

The previous owner had the engine built by C.R.A.P so I don't know much about it to be honest but it pulls to 6000+, idles at 1000 and passes the MOT!
It also handles far better than my previous standard 2.8i and does not understeer!

My MK1 Capri project has ended prematurely after finding out it was bent and I haven't got the heart to carry on with it.

I've just been out looking at this and wondering about a revamp and the old tax disc had fallen on the floor, expired in November 2006!

After a false start with another MK1 I have finally found another to use all the running gear out of my MK3. It's a 1972 GT XLR and was just 4 miles up the road!

    Re: Capri 302 V8

Well the big strip down has begun and all the running gear is being removed. I sold the Brooklands seats and will sell the leather door cards.
I'm now thinking of selling what is left, ie a Famous, Classic Ford magazine and fastest Ford DVD featured ex V8 Capri!
It is/was a 2.8i with V5, proper V6 type strengthened shell, bonnet, boot, doors, bumpers, lights, glass, dash, loom, expensive Toad alarm and remote central locking. It will be rolling on cheap old suspension and wheels just to aid collection.
A very solid car with a few minor bubbles and ideal for a project or reshell.
I will put a For Sale ad up when I think what it's worth and when it's ready to go.
Anyone interested can PM me.

I ended up selling the black MK1 to my mate who wants to put a 302 in it as well. When it came down to it I decided I couldn't pull the MK3 apart, so, after 4 years(!) I'm intending to get it back on the road. I've even signed up for the Keevil track day so I have to sort it!

Hi DarrenM, Wow XBY320X was my old capri! I bought it as a tired old 2.8 in 1997 then i put a rover v8 EFI in it. I had it painted in 2001 and it looked gorgeous when i put it back together. I sold it in 2003 to someone in my town(Basingstoke) and he put a 302 in it.Then i didnt see it anymore, very sad.So i noticed it looking a bit tired now.Are you going to sort it?

Hi metalmoth, good to hear from a previous owner. I bought it in Basingstoke from Luke, the guy who bought it from you, ran it for a couple of years and took it off the road to sort a few things, but other cars and making a living have got in the way! My current plan and as always subject to change,(!) is to probably use the engine and gearbox in my Mustang. The rest will most likely be sold.
