    Re: Project Mum

Well, the usual exploration into the drivers side has revealed some nasty rot (there's a surprise)

So it looks like a floor pan, an inner sill and an outer sill is needed here

Apart from that, it doesn't look too bad

Wondered what was happening with this myself? I can't believe it has been over 7 months since an update. Time sure flies while your backs turned.

Well, it's purely down to the people here, I take no credit at all, but I am actually thinking about going back to the workshop.

I need to go shopping first.

Yes, doesn't time fly. My mate bought a flat, and I ended round there to do a refit of some internal walls, build two bathrooms, rewire and replumb it. After that I kinda lost the plot on this

Still, the thought is in my head now having seen some of what's going on here, but I'm never going to try racing Mr Roberts, he's unstoppable

    Re: Project Mum

Well, guess where I've been today.....

Sat there for a while, cleared up a bit, moved some stuff, moved it back again, moved some other stuff, looked at the car, moved some stuff, had a cup of tea, etc

Then I thought I should do something to justify actually going to the garage today, so without further ado, I give you........a door pillar repair, Dave Roberts style!

Nice bit of Galv plate later....

Then as I'm missing an outer sill, I thought I'd have a look at the drip rail, and ended up cutting the whole thing off

    More to follow on Monday.

    Re: Project Mum

This was far as I got with the drivers side arch. Still contemplating whether to semi tub it, or repair the inner arch back to standard....

As I had to do a clutch on Mums Rover 216, the car had to come off the spit and be moved out of the way, so I figured I might as well have a proper tidy up after the clutch was done

And to make it feel more homely, some wall decoration was added...

Having the car back on the floor was a good opportunity to get the engine out

I didn't take the engine out last time I restored this car, at least I'll get a chance to paint the engine bay this time.

It would be an awfull waste not to have the engine apart while it's out too, so I spent some time yesterday on a first degrease. Boy was it shitty! The clutch is almost down to the rivets, and the rear coreplug was about to burst, so it was a good job I took it out after all

Found a bit more rot in the engine bay hiding behind the servo mounting, so that will be one job for today...

    Re: Project Mum

Got the engine bay stripped of all its bits and pieces today, and while I was removing the front wiring loom, I got to thinking about tidying it up. I fitted a MK2 washer bottle last time so that it would have a washer pump, but it just didn't look right, plus it was filthy dirty. The loom had been modified to acount for the pump wiring, and this got me thinking. The bracket is still on the heater plenum, and it's such a shame that MK1 washer bottles dont come up too often (in new condition), so I had a flash of inspiration......

    ....why not make one?

And if I make one, I could build the washer pump into it, so....

And it's a direct swap for the original, fitting on the same wedge bracket

The fillier cap had me stumped for a while, but a quick look through my grommit tin turned up a good size blanking grommit, perfect !

very impressive, and inspiratonal, I'm just about to start my mk1, and will be going over this again One question, is it a gassless mig you are using?, I have one, but am not too happy with my welds, they seem dirty compared to gas mig welding. Keep up the good work popcorn:

    Re: Project Mum

Yes, it's the Clark 150 NoGas, and yes, the welds are dirtier than the usual gas shrould welding, but as most of the welds on cars are either hidden or flatted, I have never really bothered to change it. It's also much more convenient for me to have to only worry about the wire level, and not unexpectedl run out of gas.

For fabrication purposes, I use a TIG.

    Re: Project Mum

Well, it's been a while since I posted anything on this thread, but that's because I've been too busy

Decided to get the engine bay stripped out, then get all the paint off it. That turned out to be a job I wished I hadn't started, but the wire wheel on the grinder was doing OK. I finished it off the the grit blast gun for those hard to reach areas, and I made a right mess of the workshop. I think we can safely say that "Central Blast Cleaning" are safe, I won't be offering any competition

Now, it's just too disheatening to leave bare metal for too long and watch it go brown again, so I thought I'd use up some of that lovely "Kurust" I bought.

Yes, I know, potentially I have gone mad with it, I just hope my shares in it do well
Anyway, time to crack open the etch primer....

That's much more like it. While it was off the spit, I thought this might be a good time to get going on the drivers side bumper iron mounting and chassis section.....

The old repair (not sure if it was mine or not) has gone again, so time to cut it out.

Yes, it's got Kurust on it

That's it for this week, I'll fill that hole Monday.

If you decide to get carried away stripping another bit, try those stripping discs from Halfords that go on an angle grinder.

    Re: Project Mum

OK, a few updates of the weeks progress before I go and do some more....

The bumper iron mounting area needed the internal strengthening rib replacing...

Then the outer skin can be reapired...

Time to put on the front cross member, me thinks. First I need to do some repairs (shock, horror!)
Both the areas at the bottom of the radiator mounts have been eaten, so lets start with that first.

OK, now those are done, we can try the xmember for a fit...

Funnily enough, I tried two xmembers that I have here, and they both stuck out too far by about 1/4". This would mean that the front panel wont sit back onto the front of the inner wings. As a coincidence, both cross members are Veng items. Anyway, time for a cut'n'shut, and remove the 1/4" from the cross member that I don't want.

Right, off to do some more....

    Re: Project Mum

Spent the day cleaning down old paint and rust again, jeezuz, what a job! The front end is now looking nice and bright though, which I have never done previously, and hopefully wont have to do again.

And then to fit the newly shortened cross member. Now where did I leave that spot welder?

I really need to start thinking about doing the rear arches, it's a job I hate, and I've been putting it off for ages. So, the plan is to cut here.....

And see if I can make it into an inner arch repair. The front and rear arches are not too dissimilar in shape, so I'm hoping I can bend the cut-outs around to make them fit, and save myself 50 quid in the process.

    More next week.

    Re: Project Mum

Yes, the inevitable happened. I found something else to do, which nicely put off doing the rear arch I decided to have a look at the outer and inner sill, plus the floor. I've been staring at this for too long. So, back on the spit she goes....

And this is the area I'm getting fed up looking at

Now as the outer sill isn't too bad, I'm going to cut it halfway down, and join the new sill there. This way it shouldn't upset the door gap (which was good prior to me bending the car in half putting it on the spit ) Bye bye old sill...

Now it becomes apparent just how bad the inner sill is, and all down to a bloody heater matrix leaking . As the car is suspended, I'll cut out small sections of the inner sill and replace it as I go, to save bending it any more

I'm using galvanised sheet again for these areas just to try and extend the life of the repair a few more years. These areas (in fact any boxed section ) will be crying out for copious amounts of WaxOil in them once I'm finished. I shall NOT be restoring this one again. I decided the front floor section was just too badly mangled (previous repairs over the years etc) so a familiar sight awaits those that have had any dealings with rotten Escorts

You can also see the rear section of inner sill that has been replace, and I'll be following that through to the front. To make life easier, I have removed some sections from the rear and front seat plinths. This makes the inner sill sections far more accessable, as this is usually an area which doesn't get replaced, especially the inner sill area between the front seat mounting and the jacking point strengthening plate. Here, we can plainly see it, and work on it...

Cut the rear one too, as the tin worm is spreading into the area under the seat

OK, the front floor has been replaced (Hadrian panels are such a great fit, aren't they? ), so that leaves the rest of the inner sill to do, which will finish this area inside the car.

That's all for now folks, tune in for the next installment

    Re: Project Mum

Steady progress. The floor is now all closed up again, and the inner sill has been replaced up to the area by the back seat. That lovely little job will be next, in the meantime, here is some resto porn

I have used some "Galvanising Spray" on the inner sill. This is basically a zinc primer with etching abilities, and provides a lasting protective coating for any bare clean metal.

    Re: Project Mum

Got feck all done yesterday, so I thought I'd better make up for it today, even knocked off work early as well

This was the challenge set, and a particularly nasty piece of fabrication as it involves bending in 2 planes. Oh well, in for a penny....

..worth more than a pound. Strange how it goes, isn't it? I've been putting this off purely because I didn't fancy it, but it actually went really smoothly. The replacement panel was bent up by eye, and fitted perfectly. If only it all went this easy

    Stay tuned.
